100+ wishlists strategy check

100+ wishlists strategy check

I announced my adventure game last month and it has not gained much traction. This is my first rodeo so a strategy check was in order.

  1. Store Page. I think it looks good, images are clean, summary is player focuses, and capsule art is professional.

  2. Socials. I am screaming into the void weekly. this is new and alien to me, but quality has slowly risen as I have learned the tools. I usually do 1 vertical video, Bluesky every few days, and started making Reddit posts instead of creeping.

  3. Creator outreach. I reach out directly to 3 to 5 content creators a week. This is purely relationship building and awareness right now. So far I have 2 positive responses out of 40 emails.

  4. Big Events. I stumbled my announcement phase. My store, trailer, social posts, and press outreach were all out of sync. I got no response from gamepress. I need to probably plan and coordinate better for demo, release and other announcements.

This is mostly a sanity check. Am I insane? Is this right?

Star Fable - Announcement Trailer

Almost 4 years ago I sat down and played the Link’s Awakening remake with my daughter. She loved the goofy characters, the cartoon style, and she loved solving puzzles across the island. The combat was something she was not interested in, especially when it got stressful with low hearts or hard bosses. Near the end of the game she gave up and I asked her if she wanted to make a game and she could decide exactly what was in it.

So the idea of Star Fable was born.

We planned abilities with a focus on non-combat, exploration powers. The first ability was using sparkly magic instead of a sword, it helps drive home that we aren’t combat focused. Then transforming into Stardust was born because my preK son wanted to run away from everything, escape enemies and keep exploring. A year after starting out my daughter was bolder and asked for some tools to fight back, so fire based abilities were added with Starfire, a straight forward projectile and Supernova our explosive ability. Over the years we’ve locked it down to 7 abilities and 3 companions.

I didn't intend to make a top down metroidvania, but to drive out fun mechanics that don't lean hard into combat I ended up making backtracking and gated progression part of the games identity. Then I got carried away making the map interconnected by adding an entire mining area under the overworld zones.

This week we posted our announcement trailer. I don't have any idea what the cross over is between wholesome adventure games and metroidvania is, but I'm excited to share our game.. If you know some kids that need need introduced to metroidvania games, share the link.
