Open Water Race Issues
I wanted to post here to make sure I’m not crazy, but please be kind when you reply. I almost drowned during this event.
My swim club went to the 1.2 mile race in Big Bear, CA this weekend and there were a few things that felt… wrong during the race.
We were told the water was in the low 70s/high 60s when we got there, but they heavily emphasized that we put wetsuits on, even though we didn’t bring them and also wearing one would disqualify us from the race.
Out of the 27 of us that participated (total swimmers; not just from our team) three of us had to be rescued from cold shock, one gentleman had to be taken away from hypothermia. I personally was one of the folks rescued even though I am a veteran swimmer and have participated in many open waters previously. After visiting the doctor yesterday, I discovered I have a lung infection from the lake water.
After talking to lake patrol, I found out that the temperature that day was actually closer to 55°.
Of course we signed waivers and no one was thinking about even suing anyway but… is it irresponsible to not inform your participants of the conditions beforehand? All of my swimmers, whether they finished the race or not, said they came away with some hypothermia symptoms or injuries.
