[Build Upgrade] Maya + V-Ray workstation upgrade: Ryzen vs Intel Core Ultra?

Hi, I am looking to upgrade my PC mainly for 3D rendering and production work.

My main workload:

- V-Ray rendering (mainly CPU rendering)

- Maya

- ZBrush

- Substance Painter

- Nuke

I have mostly used CPU rendering in vray.

My current PC:

- CPU: Intel Core i5-10400 (6 cores / 12 threads)

- Motherboard: H410 chipset

- RAM: 16GB DDR4 2666MHz (2x8GB G.Skill Aegis)

- GPU: RTX 3060 Ti 8GB

- Storage:

- 500GB SSD (Windows + software)

- 1TB HDD (projects/storage)

- PSU: MSI MAG (I forgot the exact model)

I am considering two main upgrade paths 🗺️:

Option 1 - Move to Intel Core Ultra: If so, which one would you choose, if possible based on your budget? (with Motherboard)

- Upgrade RAM to 32GB or 64GB DDR5

Option 2 - Move to AMD Ryzen: If so, which one would you choose, if possible based on your budget? (with Motherboard)

- Upgrade RAM to 32GB or 64GB DDR5

Questions:

  1. For Maya + V-Ray CPU rendering specifically, would you choose AMD Ryzen or Intel Core Ultra today, and why?

  2. Which RAM brand would you recommend for this type of workstation?

  3. With Maya, ZBrush, Substance Painter and V-Ray, would you recommend 32GB or directly 64GB of RAM?

Thanks for taking the time to read this and for any advice you can provide.

PC UPGRADE 3D/V-Ray rendering

Hi,

my main workload is 3D production :

V-Ray rendering (CPU) - ZBRUSH - Maya scenes - Substance Painter texturing - Lighting workflows

My current PC :

  • - CPU: Intel Core i5-10400 (6 cores / 12 threads)
  • - Motherboard: H410 chipset
  • - RAM: 16GB DDR4 2666MHz (2x8GB G.Skill Aegis)
  • - GPU: RTX 3060 Ti 8GB
  • - Storage: 500GB SSD (Windows + software) / 1TB HDD (projects/storage)
  • - PSU: MSI MAG (I forgot.)

I am considering three upgrade paths :

Option 1 - Upgrade my current Intel platform:

- Upgrade RAM to 32GB or 64GB DDR4

- Upgrade CPU to i7-10700 or i9-10900 (if worthwhile)

- Keep my H410 motherboard and RTX 3060 Ti

Option 2 - Move to a new AMD AM5 platform:

- Ryzen 7 9700X or Ryzen 9 9900X

- B650/B850 motherboard

- 64GB DDR5 RAM

- Keep my RTX 3060 Ti for now

Option 3 - Sell my current PC and build/buy a completely new workstation.

Questions :

  1. For V-Ray CPU rendering, is Ryzen 7 9700X / Ryzen 9 9900X a big enough performance improvement to justify replacing the motherboard and RAM?
  2. Is upgrading my old Intel platform still worth it in 2026, or would the money be better spent on a new AM5 build?
  3. Should I prioritize RAM (32GB/64GB) before upgrading the CPU?
  4. Is the RTX 3060 Ti 8GB still good enough for V-Ray GPU rendering, or should I save for a GPU with more VRAM?
  5. Would you sell this PC and start fresh, or upgrade it?

My priority is production stability and render times,

Thanks for taking the time to read this. :=)
