Starting to suspect those orange grid lines on the holodeck don’t even do anything.

They don’t have numbers on them, so you can’t use them for casual measurements. They don’t seem to be where the holograms come from or make the “woosh” sound. Apparently some holorooms don’t even have them.

But they do look pretty.

Mean Streets was originally planned as a sequel to Who's That Knocking at My Door, but became its own thing. What other sequels do you think could benefit from being seperated, made into a spiritual sequel?

Just imagine it's the same cast, same premise, but we remove any continuity or literal callbacks.

I'm thinking something like Die Hard With a Vengeance. Could that work as a spiritual sequel? You'd lose the idea of Simon being Hans brother but how important even was that? I know a number of fans are upset that it shows McClane again seperated from Holly and so you'd remove that.

It could also help other sequels that have that stink of "really, this is happening again?" Could Home Alone 2 work better if it was a distinct movie? It could even still be part of the franchise, just don't pretend this happened again and that we should probably be throwing these parents in jail! Would it be weird to have the same cast?

Please note that the “kill the redshirts” holodeck program has been restored. We apologize for the error in deleting it.

It won’t happen again.

I still miss seeing films projected on 35mm film!

Saw Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma last night in Toronto at the Tiff Lightbox on a 35mm print, and I know it's probably been said to death, but I'll say it again, I still love the old celluloid experience.

The texture, the way the screen flickers... someone once told me that in a film projection you are spending roughly half that time in a pitch black theatre due to the shutter and that has a deep psychological effect on how you process the film. The image has a certain life to it.

I've learned to live with digital projection but I'm still a little concious of the fact that I'm going all the way out to the cinema to see a computer file that often isn't projected at much more than 2K resolution.

That said, the last years of 35mm weren't perfect. Projector lights would fade, prints would be beaten to death. I used to chuckle at the AMC pre-show tails that had accumulated so much dirt and wear over the years! But when you had a great looking print with excellent focus it was truly brilliant to look at! Of course the problems of lazy projection of film isn't too different from the modern problems of lazy projection of digital, where if there's a problem nothing will even be fixed until someone in the theatre just gets up and tells the lobby.

Please note that the "Kill the Captain" holodeck program has been deleted. Please DO NOT try to re-create it.

We don't care who made it. Well actually, we care a great deal but the ship's counselor and Captain have agreed reluctantly to not press the matter.

Just please, find some other way to work out your rage.

Starfleet HR here. Due to an accounting error, all officers were accidentally paid last week.

This is just a warning that you if you discovered money in your bank accounts, or more to the point, you discovered that you suddenly have bank accounts, I must warn everyone NOT to spend the money within them. We are working to rectify the situation and are taking steps to make sure it doesn’t happen again.

Thank you for your attention.

How long is it appropriate to wait while pausing a holodeck program so that someone can go use the washroom?

I mean geez, we’re in the middle of a great scene and you pick NOW to go? It’s been ten minutes, I’m losing the moment and the NPCs frozen expressions are turning creepy.

Five more minutes and I’m calling “resume”.

Hey what's the point of seeking out new life and new civilizations if half the time we can't go down and talk to them?

Over and over again, it's like YAY, found a brand new civilization. Aw fuck, they're prewarp. Guess we gotta do long range scans from orbit and warp away, don't want to run the risk of ANOTHER Mintakin incident. God forbid someone is dumb enough to leave behind a book on Chicago gangsters or something.

At this point, studying them without contact is becoming nothing more than pure voyeurism.

Commercial and industrial places have these illuminated EXIT signs everywhere for the purposes of safety. Shouldn’t it be prudent to have the same in the holodeck?

Feels like you’re asking for trouble to have the exit be something you call for that often fails to even trigger.

I gotta say, there’s something creepy about designing an android and making it look and sound like yourself, or designing an emergency medical hologram and modeling after yourself.

I guess I just don’t trust that. I guess you gotta model them after someone and maybe there’s a shortage of volunteers. Personally speaking I’d find it awkward doing testing on a robot or holodeck program who looks and sounds exactly like myself, and annoying. I can’t help but infer a degree of narcissism here.

In the mirror universe, Jellico mandates a 1 crew watch rotation.

That’s because he doesn’t trust anyone else. Plus the rest of the crew is dead from assassinations or in agony.

He’s actually regarded as a decent guy overall though.

I hear they are looking for actors to play the role of, let me check “Weyoun 6”. What are my chances? What should I focus on for my audition?

Should I research Weyoun 5? I kind of want to put my own spin on it. I’d rather go in blind

If you’re trying to cook a meal for real, is it okay to use just a few replicated ingredients?

Maybe sourcing every ingredient in space is more difficult the deeper you get. Maybe it’s been some time since you’ve been at a Starbase.

Or maybe you’re just a bit lazy. Does it ruin it for you? Will people judge you?

Psst… transporter room, mind replicating me a hot dog and transporting it next to me? I mean, if you’re not busy. And when are you ever busy?

Edit: oh yeah, ketchup and onions. And some napkins, but I suppose that goes without saying.

Pulled a surprise birthday party on my Klingon security chief and he responded by vaporizing three crew-mates with his phaser. DIFU?

He admitted it was impulsive. He’s look, a really good security officer. One of the best in Starfleet really. I’d trust him with my life, usually. He prides himself on being a quick shot, especially ever since our captain was abducted right off the bridge.

But this time, he had just come back from a fighting tournament. I suppose his survival instincts were a little bit on overdrive, maybe we should have taken that into account.

Should we court martial him or just declare that this is on us?

It sure must have been triggering after Picard came back from torture and someone had to tell him there'd been a change, "There are four shifts".

I wonder who was the one to tell him and how it went.

All the color you see in phaser blasts and tractors beams is just artificial coloring added so you can actually see it. The colors do nothing practical.

It’s like the smell they add to propane so you can detect it, or the colors they add to car wash goop to make you think it’s doing something!
