Anyone come off TRT after several years despite having high natural T before starting?
I’m 56 and have been on TRT for almost 4 years. Before starting at 52, my natural total T was 900–1,000 ng/dL, SHBG was very high (high 80s/90s), and free T was ~10.7 ng/dL. Despite those numbers, I had low libido/erections, low energy and had lost my drive for the gym.
I spent the first few years trying different TRT protocols. For the last year I’ve been on daily subQ (~85–90 mg/week), and it’s the first protocol that has consistently maintained my libido and erections. Current labs are generally total T ~1,100, SHBG in the 50s and E2 ~25.
But I’m questioning whether I want or need to stay on TRT indefinitely given that my natural T was so high before starting.
I’m especially interested in anyone who had normal/high T before TRT and came off after several years. Did your natural production eventually recover close to baseline? How rough was the transition? Cold turkey vs. a medically supervised restart/PCT? And did you ultimately stay off or go back on?
Separate question: I’ve also developed mild-to-moderate sleep apnea over the last year. If anyone actually saw their AHI/OSA improve after stopping TRT, I’d be interested in hearing about that too.
