Broke two rules for this one.

Broke two rules for this one.

I am not a grade or page quality hunter at all, but I generally don’t like writing on the cover or brittle pages. Since I’ve dipped my toes into the Golden Age, however, those things seem to be more prevalent. I made exceptions to both to add this beauty to my small Schomburg collection. The price was right and the colors on the cover were much better than others I’d seen.

What are things you won’t overlook and what’s the book or books that might get you to “look the other way”?

Pulling the Plug

After collecting thru the 90s and reluctantly selling in mid 2000s, I re-entered the collection biz two years ago. I began a mad dash to regain all the important books I had and surpass my prior collection. Well, I have done that and more.

Then I decided to complete a couple runs I never thought I would, ASM and Daredevil Vols 1. Now with 60 and 26 left to go respectively, I’m not feeling it. I still want to collect, but not that. What’s so great about a run? I’d rather focus on a small group of books I really want rather than having to fill in a bunch of books that don’t mean that much.

Has anybody else changed up their collecting goals midstream? I know how much I regretted selling before, but if I want to get the books I really want, I think I have to change my strategy and probably thin the herd.

Two for One(almost)

The night before infuriating the Speculation sub, I went on Heritage hoping once again to snag ASM 3(or 5 or 7) but they all went for more than I wanted to spend. Made a frustration bid for a pair of books at the end of the Spidey section one of which I already have. Needed the 39 but now I’m gonna have to figure out what to do with the other. One day the elusive, yet readily available ASM 3 will be mine.

As a side note, if you use gocollect, the sale price was entered for only ASM 38, so the 30 day average for a 3.5 is a touch inflated.

Original Art Score

Found this beauty on comiclink tonight and absolutely had to have it. Annual 7 page 1 splash by Rick Burchett.

Signature Collectors!

I recently won an auction for ASM 98 with a certified Romita sig without realizing that he wasn’t an artist on the book, though he is definitely associated with that particular storyline and the adjacent books. Not usually a signature guy and not sure why I bid, other than thought a Romita sig would be cool.

Signature collectors(or anyone for that matter), would something like this keep you from getting a book, or pay less? I’m probably going to get rid of it because it bugs me.

Are You People Insane?

One stupid Spidey Opening weekend and all of a sudden y’all have lost your minds. Last nights Heritage closing bids were high, but this is nuts. 220 bucks for ASM 43 in 5.0? That’s 50% higher than FMV. Calm down people.

Another consolation prize

So I had found the perfect copy of ASM 3 to bid on a couple weeks ago. 4.0 but looked great, at that grade In the right price range, I was sure I would get it. Even willing to go a little higher than FMV. Long story short, didn’t get it, but grabbed this guy instead. Not my fave, but looks good for the grade. One more down for the full run.

Wheatonnnnnnn!

In season 5, Leonard is happy to accept an invitation to Wil’s house for a party, much to the chagrin of Sheldon.

Theories as to why Leonard doesn’t hold a grudge against Wil Wheaton for convincing Penny to dump him?

There is no way he didn’t find out after the bowling match disaster.

The Last Key?

Started collecting in 2021 after selling my previous collection 25 years ago. Seemingly trying to make up for lost time I have been feverishly buying books to try and “beat” my old collection. This is the last non ASM book on the list other than the big grails.

Cover Hunting Side Quests!

I do not collect Golden Age books as a rule, and this beauty is only the 2nd one in my collection.

It doesn’t appear too often on the auction block, especially in the range where price and condition both hit the sweet spot. It’s not a grail like #49, but it is easily my favorite Schomburg cover and has been near the top of the want list for awhile.

My main focus is completing ASM including AF15, but I don’t stay disciplined enough to not buy random books in the want queue. Anybody else suffer from this affliction?

What is the point of this sub?

I follow a lot of comic book subs, and this is the only one that I see people gatekeeping the sanctity of the sub. A lot of “ this isn’t the place for that” etc.

Are you just tired of noobs asking how much their books are worth when they could easily find that info elsewhere?

It says no general comic book posts, but I see posts here all the time that do nothing but show a new acquisition.

If it’s speculation then shouldn’t every post have a potential valuation attached to the text. For example “Is D’orc 1 going to be as valuable as Invincible” or some stuff like that.

Five Down, One to go!

While I’m still more than a couple issues from my full ASM run, I’m only one away from my micro goal of all the sinister six first appearances. Only Doc Ock to go.

Galaxycon

Has anybody been to Galaxycon this evening? I’m wondering if they have very many Comic Book vendors. These days Cons are usually all anime, Funko Pops and b-list actors.

Couldn’t Keep Being Good

I put the brakes on collecting at the start of the year except for LCS run fillers for ASM SpecSM and DD. Told myself I would hold out for ASM9 but couldn’t hold it in any longer. Wasn’t even drinking! Anybody else impulse buy like that? I blame this sub for showing me comics every day.

Two more books for my run, but way higher grades than I need for those issues.
