Struggling to get AI/Data Science internships despite relevant skills

I’m a 2nd-year undergraduate studying Business Data Analytics at a private university in Colombo. I study part-time due to financial constraints, and despite doing well academically and having a strong grasp of statistics, machine learning, and data science, I’ve been struggling to land a meaningful internship. (To emphasize on that- ive spent a whole lot of time self studying these topics, so when i say strong grasp its “strong” enuf for an intern, at least i think so lol)

Halfway through my degree, I realized I’m much more interested in AI, Data Science, and AI Engineering than traditional business analysis roles. The problem is that because my degree title is “Business Data Analytics” rather than Computer Science, I feel like recruiters often overlook me for technical positions before I even get an interview.

I’m trying to change my approach. Instead of relying solely on LinkedIn applications, I want to network more and meet people in person. Are there any AI, data science, startup, or tech communities, clubs, competitions, conferences, or networking events (university-affiliated or not) that you’d recommend? How do i get updates on such events?

Also, what projects would help prove that I can compete with CS students for AI/Data Science internships? I’m looking for projects that genuinely impress recruiters rather than basic portfolio projects everyone seems to have.

Any advice from people who successfully broke into AI/Data Science internships from a non-CS background would be greatly appreciated.

Current students or alumni of University of Peradeniya Statistics/Data Science

I'm considering studying Statistics/Data Science at the University of Peradeniya and would love to hear from current students or alumni.

  • How clear are the lectures?
  • Are lecture notes and materials sufficient?
  • How much self-study is required?
  • In terms of career opportunities, postgraduate studies, and long-term prospects, which degree is better to specialize in?(Stat or DS)

I'd really appreciate honest opinions and any advice. Thank you!

Academic Route Advice: MSc in Computer Science vs. MSc in AI at UoM?

Hey everyone,

I'm currently working as a Native Mobile Developer at a Sri Lankan company. In our day-to-day workflow, we use a lot of AI tools to assist with development, but my actual core role is pure native software engineering. I don't have any professional AI/Machine Learning development experience.

I’m planning to start a part-time MSc to level up my career, and I’ve shortlisted two paths at the University of Moratuwa:

  1. MSc in Computer Science
  2. MSc in Artificial Intelligence

I don’t have immediate plans to move from my current company, so I'll be continuing my native development role while studying.

Here is my dilemma:

  • The AI Path: AI is obviously the massive trend for the next few years. However, I’m worried that if I get an MSc in AI but finish it with zero professional AI work experience on my resume, it might look mismatched to future employers or not give me the career ROI I want.
  • The CS Path: Going with a classic MSc in CS feels like a safer, more solid backing. It aligns directly with my strong native development and software engineering foundation.

For those in the Sri Lankan tech industry, or anyone who has done these specific programs at UoM:

  • Will an MSc in AI actually open doors if my daily job remains in traditional software engineering?
  • What are the pros and cons of both options regarding current market demands in SL and abroad?
  • Which path would you recommend for long-term career growth?

Thanks in advance for the insights!

The government better not do this

AI data centres would destroy the country and there’s absolutely no reason why we should give into this level of capitalist greed.

Ps; AI is not a necessity, and we can function without it just fine. AI is already taking away people’s jobs, reducing young people’s cognitive abilities, people use GenAI for the most horrific things like generating sexual abusive material, and it destroys the environment. Just leaving this here in case everyone start fighting in the comments.
