I guess before it became a regular size comic there were at least 2 issues of a Mini-Comic by Micheal Vrana and Robert Lum. (NOTE: PAGES 14 AND 15 of the "Lyle" story are posted in the comments below. Sorry I missed uploading it above.)

Montreal West Is Elwood City! Director Greg Bailey has said he used a lot of building reference in the neighborhood where he lives throughout the series.

You can look around Google Maps and see if you can find any other familiar buildings / statues, etc. that may have been used as design reference. https://maps.app.goo.gl/mY3KiwY1tS5k36pC9
