Elder millennials are the only generation to fully witness the rise of the Reality TV Fascists. All the worst people from the sleaziest shows of our youth are running the country. It still feels unreal.
Every day since 2016 has felt like we were collectively transported into a nightmare parallel universe. All of the absolute dumbest, most vindictive, shallow narcissists that existed in the trashiest media when I was growing up are now either directly running the country or loud cogs in the right-wing media sphere.
Joe Rogan. Theo Von. Sean Duffy. Rachel Campos. Elisabeth Hasselbeck. Kennedy. Andrew Tate. Dr. Drew. Dr. Phil. Dr. Oz. Spencer Pratt. The Duck Dynasty weirdos. The Chrisleys. Donald Jessica Trump and his entire garbage family.
The only way I can describe their shift into being taken seriously and their rise to power is by mass psychosis on the part of the American people.
Trump was a punchline for the first 3/4 of my life. He was shorthand for an undeserving spoiled womanizing asshole. If you asked 10 year old me “name a rich man who is a bad person”, I would’ve immediately said Donald Trump.
As a kid, watching any of these junk food reality shows during my free time was intensely discouraged by my parents. Now they aggressively accuse me of being a godless communist for refusing to support these dorks and stare at me blankly when I bring up their trashy origins. The irony is maddening.
It almost feels like the 1% hired all these unscrupulous turds to push their wealth-hoarding agenda.
This is the bad place.
EDIT: I should’ve worded the title better. I didn’t mean we were the only generation to see it or be watching TV, I meant that we were the generation at the age that spent days on end bored in the suburbs all summer watching hundreds of hours of daytime talk shows and proto reality shows. We were the most captured audience.
