The fees are out of control…is this just in NYC?

What is a Javits fee? How can you have a tax for a fee? I have never seen this before in my life!! Are any of these fees able to be disputed?? Who controls this? Congress? This is just simply out of hand. I really like Hyatt and I’m sure all hotels do it but cmon!

Poker in the South of France

I’ll be in Marseille, Cannes and Monaco for a few days each next week and love to check out the poker scene when I travel. I’ve played in Paris, Barcelona, Marbella, Madrid, multiple Caribbean countries etc. I don’t frighten easily but obviously want to play in a game that’s fun and not going to rob me.

What’s some of your favorite casinos/clubs in the cities I outlined above? Cash or daily tourney! Thanks in advance!

Suffolk County Food Scene

Is it just me or is the food in Suffolk absolutely abysmal? The price points are not matching the quality, service etc. There’s a couple restaurants that are worth the expense and some I cannot understand for the life of me how they’re still in business. There’s some that are fantastic during happy hour but wouldn’t dream of paying their regular menu price.

I’ll take recommendations for places to add to my list! Please and thank you!

**Here’s my favorites:**

Tellers (during lunch and hanging at the Gold Bar)

Salt and Barrell (during happy hour for oysters and cocktails)

Birdie Bar (for the vibe and bar)

View (for the view and happy hour drinks)

Thai Station Cafe (authentic food)

Green Hill Kitchen (10s all around)

Little Creek Oyster Farm (10s all around)

**Here’s my non favorites:**

Whalers - went downhill after they removed the live music from the deck and can never play anything on those TVs outside. Service is frightening, the girls at the front need a class in basic hospitality. It’s a shame because the food is solid but I refuse to do it anymore

Babylon Social - overpriced chaos, nothing further

Jackson Hole - I don’t even know what to say about this place. The definition of highway robbery. Everything was bad and it’s a mob scene on a Monday night. I can’t understand it

Pace’s Steakhouse - overcooked seafood, poor reservation system (I liked the service so would try again but generally overhyped)

Tres Palms - a travesty food wise with a beautiful view, good staff and a stiff drink

The degradation of tennis for pickleball

I’m not any sort of tennis pro or anything like that. I enjoy the game of tennis and really got into it when Serena announced she was stepping away a couple years back. I am shocked and appalled by the actual tearing down of tennis court for pickleball courts. I thought this hobby/fad was going to die out. Websites for parks aren’t being updated so I had the glorious opportunity to pull up to a park that said it had 8 freaking tennis courts and they had ZERO!! ALL CHANGED TO PICKLEBALL! It’s happened way too many times now and I’ve had enough.

When will the madness end? How do people who actually are adept enough to play tennis or try to even play rally their local tennis people and go to their town and stop this madness. I don’t wanna say what I really think about the general participation award culture that exists today but pickleball directly feeds into that. I’m mostly upset about the destruction of tennis courts for this activity.

Marseille, St Tropez, Monaco mid/late Sept

Bonjour Du Nouveau York,

I just bought my flight to Paris! As per my Toulousian(?) friend that lives in Les Lilas I should absolutely plan to take a train to Marseilles and not fly from Paris. I so look forward to discovering the south. I speak a good amount of French as I studied the language and culture for eight years in school or at least enough to not sound like an American. I’ve been to Paris, Reims and Epernay and absolutely adored them.

Currently, my itinerary has me in Marseille from September 20 through the 23rd, St. Tropez the 23rd to the 25th and Monaco the 25th through the 28th. I would spend my last days back in Paris and fly out on October 1.

I love sports, food, architecture, nature, music, poker art and the beach. I have a good idea of like the main must do’s for myself. For example, I would absolutely go to Monte Carlo while I was in Monaco. I think I’m going to seriously consider going to the PSG Marseille game so I’m not starting from scratch.

I would love advisement given my loves of what your ideal itinerary would be. Appreciate your guidance in advance. Also open to other suggestion besides St. Tropez, I’ve heard mixed reviews.

Restaurant Lease - NNN & Key Money

So I’m doing diligence on finding space for a restaurant on Long Island. There’s a place in a town that I have identified and unfortunately this place I have noticed in my time living around has turned over about six times in 10 years. It is in a highly visible walkable area ideally placed location in a prospering town. I can’t understand for the life of me how the town hasn’t stepped in and has let this place be vacant for more than 60% of the time it’s been an existence.

The landlord is asking for $400,000 of key money and $12,000 worth of rent at 47 a square foot and there’s not even grease traps which means there’s no hot food. This landlord also happens to own two other properties on this main street and upon talking to one of the business owners on that same property apparently the landlord is not someone I would want to engage with.

What should I do? Should I go to the town? Should I write to the Better Business Bureau? It is a blight on this town that this establishment has not remained open for more than a year after the original sushi restaurant over a decade ago. While this landlord maybe not doing anything illegal it certainly seems that help is not helping the community it’s been sitting in and is waiting for something that is never going to happen (maybe a national brand come in?)

SBL vs No More Than 3 Investors For New Restaurant in NY

NOTE: I AM NOT ASKING FOR INVESTORS. ASKING FOR BENEFITS OF THEM VS A BANK FOR A LOAN

Currently going down the path of serious diligence of opening a new restaurant on Long Island, New York. I will have close to 200k in my own equity to put into the business and so don’t want to overly deal with banks. As I finish creating my business plan and pricing items versus revenue projections I only want to possibly bring in at most three other people. I want to have majority share and cannot be bought out. I reserve all rights to sell business at my discretion with appropriate good faith notice to investors obviously. Ideally, it would just be one single rich investor who doesn’t NEED the ROI in the first 2 years and an agreed upon schedule of ROI will be established. Someone whose always wanted to be in the restaurant business and has the business
savvy already is what I want most.

What would folks advise in terms of finding these kind of investors? Are there benefits of dealing with a bank? Any NYS programs or funds I could apply for for entrepreneurs or small businesses?

Looking for best ways to find the endeavor is all.

Appreciate the help!

Investor, Venture Capitalist, Mentors Around?

Currently down the path of serious diligence into opening my own restaurant and bar on Long Island, NY. The diligence includes but is not limited too:

-food cost breakdown (of every single item)
-real estate site selection & investment (new vs old shell, equipment, rent, etc)
-operating costs
-securing CPA

The concept and menu is curated. My background is leading multi million dollar large scale clinical integrations in healthcare tech. This is not my calling; instead, a stepping stone to understanding the intricacies of running a business from the top down and all around. Yes, I have a worked in a restaurant - server, bartender, even helped open one with some owners in Manhattan that had no idea what they were doing. So much so that all the original staff including myself left within 3 months. A real good example of what not to do as a restaurant owner.

Timeline: Ideally, a year and 3 month window in which I’d like to have my first friends and family.

Any recommendations on where to find someone as serious but fun as me. Let’s be honest I’m not going to leave my ultra corporate machine job to not have fun. I understand that 50% of yada yada…I assure you I’m not in that grouping. Does s*it happen? All the time. But I’ll do everything in my power and control to have my restaurant and bar be a profitable business. I want people to be apart of my journey that have the same excellence reflex and find joy in curating consistent delightful dining.

Anyone have any ideas of where to find someone like this? I want to avoid banks at all costs!

Car rental places gonna make a mint

I have so much to do this weekend was gonna use the train for part of it…as soon as I saw these people failed to reach terms I got on the line with Avis (only bc of insane discounts otherwise would use enterprise). Of course, nothing at my usual location and so I have to go to an airport :sigh: I look forward to billing my company for these extra days given if I waited til Sunday or Monday there would be no cars for the work day Monday! What a crazy situation. Really hope resolved by MDW!

Waterpik was electrocuted

So I was in Bangkok and bought my waterpik because I wanted to stay up on my dental hygiene and the Airbnb bathroom outlet we stayed at Fried the motor I guess. It made a weird noise and that was it. I was just hoping when I got back stateside it would work like my phone charger did. Unfortunately, that was not the case to my dismay. Has anyone ever tried to get their waterpik fixed or should I just buy a new one? Any suggestions for one they really like - maybe a bit more travel friendly?
