Auckland supermarket repeatedly breaching employment law and exploiting migrant worker

I work at an Auckland supermarket with a pattern of bad-faith deceptive treatment of staff, especially young/migrant workers. There are a few separate issues going on and I’d appreciate advice on each.

1. Repeat breach of contract even after being backpaid. I was previously backpaid around $2k after the company admitted to breach of contract and stolen wages. They’ve now breached my contract again — this is a repeat offence, not a one-off mistake. Its all clearly evidenced by my email communication with HR but they literally breached it again which is actually insane considering I made a huge deal of it the first time. They will try justify it by saying its an audit or mistake but i cant accept that because it happened because they are negligent

2. Unequal break entitlements for migrant staff. Migrant coworkers, Chinese national, are only getting 10-minute breaks on 7-hour shifts, while other kiwi staff like me get the standard 20/30 minute breaks required by law.

3. Forced contract variations disguised as policy. Long-term uneducated part-timers are being pushed onto casual contracts without being told it’s to cut costs.

Also, the manner in which vary contract. I have screenshots of them telling me its “required” to sign a variation of the origina contract that lowers my hours and I didnt sign it obviously but they went on to enforce it. I told them this. HR silly goose claimed the variation was “required” as a “hygiene practice,” which doesn’t hold up at all🤯— “required” has an ordinary legal meaning, it means you are required to sign a contract theres no other interpretation. No one cares if its a hygeine practice because it happened. The HR person im dealing with has no legal background AT ALL and im am constantly dumfounded by her dumb responses so im thinking to escalate to email CEO? is this a bad idea? I dont really care if i lose my job I just want make sure this immigrant and youth exploiting company gets publicity.

4. Pattern of exploiting vulnerable staff. The store disproportionately hires very young people and migrants. One migrant coworker has confided in me because I’m “the closest thing to a lawyer” he has access to, and he told me he sobs to himself everyday due to the 10min break per 7hr shift issue meanwhile kiwis getting standard breaktimes. Clearly this is a success PG but as someone working at the supermarkt he most likely cant afford legal representation so i told him to foward his emails to the union and go outside the company as HR is there to protect the company legally.

I want more than just my own back pay recovered — I want this pattern actually addressed rather than repeated? Im so disgusted i want to publicly shame them.

Happy to give more detail in the comments

Aegrotat requirement

Hi guys

I was really unwell and went to dr for med certificate today instead of my exam, but he said he was a nurse prescriber?

I dont know what that is, in the past i used a GP and it was always accepted. Its at the same doctor, except appointmnet was just booked with nurse prescriber instead of GP so im really nervous they will decline it was an important exam

On the form it says nurse practitioner is sufficient, but what about nurse prescriber😭😭

im really concerned should i try visit a GP on Monday too?

Why the fuck do people go to uni for psychology

I’m doing psych as part of a conjoint and every week feels like I’m paying thousands of dollars to learn absolutely nothing of value. Its litetally a retard commune and no one goes anyway

The lecturers are eho ive encountered are so dry and boring and lowkey incompetent but it dosent surprise me since theyve been studying this brainrot intangible knowledge all the way to phd level.

The entire degree seems to consist of reading studies about painfully obvious things, memorising theories that contradict each other and are actually wrong, and writing reports explaining common sense in the most unnecessarily complicated way.

“People are influenced by their environment.”

“Stress affects performance.”

“Humans have biases.”

Thank you psychology 😍🤯

And then after 3 years you get the privilege of finding out that a bachelor’s degree in psych qualifies you for roughly the same jobs you could have applied for before university

Every time someone asks what careers psych leads to, the answer is never an actual job. It’s always:

✨ transferable skills ✨

understanding people ✨

critical thinking

Which is untrue anyway since its all memorisation and i rewlly dont understand the point of this chud degree because u gain nothing except lost time and money i would honestly equate it to torture due to these factors. nothing in this degree is tangible or real. DO NOT TAKE PSYCHOLOGY AT UOA. abolish this degree at undergraduate level and stop taking peoples money

Meanwhile other degrees have actual outcomes and tangible skills attached to them even if you dont take the obvious route

Psych majors, I genuinely want to know: what am I missing? Is there some grand vision I’m too stupid to see, or is this entire field just an excuse to call yoursrlf a university student?

its genuinely all just busy work i want to remove it from my conjoint but i only have 1 year, i would actually be embarrased to call myself a paych graduate so il prob do it anyway🤢

Do i drop conjoint and do single LLB?

Hey guys,

I’m doing an LLB/ psych conjoint at UoA and I’ve reached the point where I’ve realised I actually like law and absolutely cannot stand psychology.
Every psych lecture feels like a chore. I find it so boring, half the time I don’t even understand what they’re trying to say, and trying to study for it feels like pulling teeth. Meanwhile I actually enjoy my law papers and don’t mind putting effort into them.
At this point psych just feels like this annoying side quest that’s constantly in the way of the degree I actually care about.

but the thing is im third year now and 20k debt so i dont know if i just see it through or drop it so i can only focus on law 🫩

I feel like I’m losing my mind trying to force myself to care about psych when I genuinely could not be less interested in it, my grades are so poor in it aswell and I do worry about my GPA as a result sonce i wanna do law hons even tho im pretty sure they use lawGPA for that? Also got some pretty nasty feedback on one of my most recent presentations for biopsych202 which is kinda triggering this realisation that I need to just drop it. I think everyone could see how uninterested I was and it was highkey embarrassing asf😢

Would really appreciate any advice, especially from people who have been through something similar. Feeling pretty stuck at the moment and keen to hear some honest experiences before I make any decisions I genuinely appreciate anyone who takes the time to reply 🙏🏻

Academic Misconduct

Hey guys

During an exam, an invigilator apparently flagged me for having notes. Afterwards I had to speak to some people about it and I basically said that didn’t happen because I didn’t have any notes. It was an old man and i dont think his vision was good since i had multiple forms of ID maybe he thought it wasnt allowed um

I’m honestly pretty angry because I’ve never had anything like this happen before and its unsubstantiated. From my perspective there isn’t any actual evidence and it’s basically just what the invigilator says happened vs what I’m saying.

What usually happens when they say they’re doing an investigation? Does that mean they already think you’re guilty or is it just standard procedure to look into it? How long do these things normally take and what kind of evidence do they look for?

Would appreciate hearing from anyone who’s been through a misconduct investigation before because its so unfair to subject an innocent person to this because of some misjudgment by an imcompetent chud

id really appreciate anything u may know abt this process🙏

Psych Exams Advice

Hey guys,

Just wondering how people are studying for psych exams, particularly the essay and medium-answer questions.

So far I’ve mostly used AI study tools like Knowt for MCQ-style revision, but I’m not really sure what the best approach is for medium-answer questions and essays. The past exams have been useful for getting a feel for the layout and question style, but the actual content seems is different year to year so its pretty limiting

At the moment I’m trying to figure out the quickest and most effective way to study for these written-response questions to a good level.

Would especially appreciate advice from anyone who has already done well in psych exams🥹

btw this is PSYCH200 and PSYCH207 but im happy for any study advice in psych exams!!

Thanks anything appreciated🙏

PSYCH 200 Level papers

Hey everyone,

I’ve got a psych multiple choice closed-book exam coming up and I genuinely don’t know the best way to study beyond what I’ve already done.

So far I’ve:
done the practice quizzes
made/reviewed flashcards
rewatched lectures
gone over notes/slides

But I still don’t feel confident and I’m not sure how people study in a way that actually gets them an A in psych problem q or long&short answer exams specifically. How are u using gizmo, jungle and turboai to ur advantage for mcq tests🙏

Do you focus on memorisation? application? active recall? practice questions?
How do you stop all the theories/studies from blending together 😭

Any tips from people who’ve done well in psych would be appreciated because I feel like I’m studying a lot but not necessarily effectively.

Anything appreciated🙏

Need Help Choosing Coffee Machine ☕️☕️

Hey everyone,

im looking at getting a coffee machine for home,

Originally I was gonna get Breville Barista Express because it seems easy having everything in one machine, but then I started seeing heaps of people saying it’s better to get a Breville Bambino and buy a grinder separately instead.

Money isn’t really the main issue, I just want something that makes really good coffee and will last‼️

Would love to know:
- if the Barista Express is actually good long term
whether Bambino + separate grinder is noticeably better
-what grinders can u recommend
-what setup you’d buy if you were starting from scratch
- Any alternative to breville?

Anything appreciated! 🙏

Hey so sorry i askd similar q before but changed it

How are people studying for a Contract Law test (40% open book) 😭 pls help

I’m kinda stuck on how to actually prepare for this. Since it’s open book, I’m not sure if I should be focusing more on making really good notes vs memorising structure?

How are you guys doing your notes — like full summaries, case tables, flowcharts, or just annotating slides? And how detailed is too detailed for an open book test?

Also are past papers the best way to study for this or is there something else that helped more? Not sure if I should just grind those or focus on understanding content first.

Any tips would be appreciated 🙏
