Fees Free Cut Protest, 11am, 28th of May (next Thursday), Union Lawn

Hey everybody,

In case no one has seen the posters and leaflets yet, the OUSA Exec, in coordination with a bunch of other student groups, are holding a protest against the government's recent cuts to the Fees Free scheme.

If you're angered by the government removing a service that many working families relied on to get their kids into tertiary education or just need an outlet to vent your frustration against the million and one sins of this government, then please come along! There will be chants, signs, and (probably) speeches. A big turnout will show that young people aren't fucking around and won't accept cuts to our futures. So bring your signs, and your energy. Should be a fun and spirited atmosphere!

Thanks for reading

Here's the link to the Facebook event for yall to share or RSVP: No To Fees-Free Cuts! Rally and Fight Back! | Facebook

Please return stolen bike. You stole it from a crash victim who was in the hospital bleeding from a cracked skull

Yesterday a young man came off his e-bike riding down Dundas Street, cracked his skull and was gushing blood, he spent over 30 minutes on the frozen ground waiting for the ambulance. I chained his e-bike to the closest wooden fence (stupid I know) as the chain wouldn’t reach around the power pole. I can now see the fence has been broken and the bike has been stolen. I know it’s a bit of a stretch but if you’ve come into possession of an e-bike that has damaged parts around the handlebars please consider doing the right thing. I understand you might think “only an idiot chains an expensive E bike like that” and deserves to have it stolen but just know that is not the case and you have stolen from a head injured victim. Alternatively if you know someone who has recently come into possession of an e-bike that isn’t theirs please do the right thing.
It was a gray or black e-bike.
I don’t know who he is or if he cracked his skull tbh but he was messed up and bleeding a lot!

Thanks, honest Dunedinite ❤️

This morning, my mum and I parked at the Fredrick St Carpark for a stressful hospital visit. Uncharacteristically, I left the car keys on the freaking TOP of the unlocked car and walked away for 5 hours (yes, over the limit of the caprark, too).

When we realised, I went back to the car to find it still unlocked, but with the keys placed nicely on the driver side wheel.

It's a good reminder that most humans are good, that most people are honest ❤️

Retro Tech Exhibit @ South D Library - 3 til 5pm Thursday 21st

Even found a theremin! Shout out if you'd like to come in earlier and help get some more things online. Was trying to get Sim City 2000 going on the iMac G3, amongst other things. Unfortunately the Megadrives need some fixing..

Introvert (35M) moving to Dunedin soon, keen to meet new people

Kia ora tātou,

I'm moving to Dunedin from Hamilton in a few weeks and, as the title says, looking to make friends. I'm generally a pretty introverted person these days. I still have a few close friends, but over the years we've all ended up in different countries/cities. I used to be pretty outgoing, play sports, go for drinks etc, but I don't really do much of that anymore. Just kind of stopped for no real reason.

I work in education, been married 10 years, no kids. Recently reconnected more with my culture and started learning te reo Māori (5+ years into that haerenga now). I read a lot and play video games (mostly fantasy/RPG stuff). Used to play rugby and squash, but too many shoulder injuries cut that out! Still watch the Warriors though.

Recently got into DND (after BG3) with my wife and some of her friends before relocating and actually really enjoyed it. Also a big nerd for space, especially the moon. Basically I'm just trying to build some healthier habits, get out of my comfort zone a bit, and make some in-person friends. Even making this post is a bit out there for me.

Don't really know what else to say, but if you reckon we'd get along, flick me a message.

Need Help Choosing Coffee Machine ☕️☕️

Hey everyone,

im looking at getting a coffee machine for home,

Originally I was gonna get Breville Barista Express because it seems easy having everything in one machine, but then I started seeing heaps of people saying it’s better to get a Breville Bambino and buy a grinder separately instead.

Money isn’t really the main issue, I just want something that makes really good coffee and will last‼️

Would love to know:
- if the Barista Express is actually good long term
whether Bambino + separate grinder is noticeably better
-what grinders can u recommend
-what setup you’d buy if you were starting from scratch
- Any alternative to breville?

Anything appreciated! 🙏

It’s FREEZING!! How are you all doing?

How are you all feeling and how are you keeping warm?

I can afford to heat my home. But it’s still bloody freezing.

I got home from work about 5:30 as I did a few things in town after I finished at 4.

The heat pump is on 25. I’m in my bed with my door open as my panel heater in my room wasn’t warming my room (it’s is on 30°.)

I still feel freezing cold .
I live out in Waitati so it’s a bit colder out here.

I could light the fire, but I’m too tired. I work as a nurse and I’m just too drained to light it tonight.

My hands are a bit cold as I write this so I’m going to search for some gloves and heat up a wheat pack.

I am feeling very very bad for all your students who can’t afford to heat your flats (been there)

and for any elderly people or single parents who are feeling the cold tonight (I am a single parent but kids are adults now)

How are you all keeping as warm as possible in your circumstances? I know that I am very fortunate but I do expect a pretty big power bill this winter.

(My home is insulated but it has very high ceilings)

Benedict Ong - Eduro Capital Limited

So Benedict has a Tiktok that says he is the founder of Eduro Capital. It is apparently a MFO (multi family office) & hedge fund.

So looking into this company it had a website edurocapital.com which is no longer there and still has an Instagram.

https://preview.redd.it/bvjm7z8br02h1.png?width=870&format=png&auto=webp&s=0be70664960f826ca3fa423fd164909e4f1a1a5a

It looks like he was looking for an intern in 2023. He says "We are led by former senior professionals with over 60 years experience in investment management, banking and finance." This posting links back to the website that had the same logo his shirt in the Tiktok.

https://preview.redd.it/cm0v74qor02h1.png?width=916&format=png&auto=webp&s=7b564de84680143bc4ed04b3eded332f9d6d96c9

Eduro Capital limited is registered in the British Virgin Islands and is still registered.

So the question for Mr Ong is - Are you still a shareholder or Director of Eduro Capital as it is not on your interests register? I'm too cheap to pay the fee to find out.

Thanks for your attention to this matter in our most special city in our greatest country.

Scabies alert

If you have the itch, please go to the chemist and buy scabies lotion so it stops the spread! It's in the halls & uni flats right now. And it spends on contact & they live 3 days on clothes, sheets etc.

Treatment is $8.50 a bottle (you need two, as do it again at exactly 7 days). Wash your sheets & towels and clothes you've worn that day & 3 days prior in HOT water. Otherwise the little crawlies will hatch & be back. They love warm water, it has to be hot.

The itching will drive you to despair.

Tell your friends & stock up on Permethrin Cream! The itch is in town.

If you're in a hall or mixing & mingling in Castle Street flats, the little buggers are on the move!

Kitchen Reno

Looking for some advice from people who’ve recently done a kitchen reno 👀

We’re currently getting quotes and had budgeted around $30k, but honestly it’s looking like that doesn’t go very far these days.

Our budget is meant to cover:

  • Joinery (kitchen island, pantry, fridge panel, standard drawer cabinets — no wall units)
  • Removal + install of the kitchen
  • Flooring
  • Trades needed (plumber/electrician etc.)

We’re already coming in over budget by $5k+ and that’s with a pretty standard laminate benchtop, nothing fancy.

For those who’ve been through this:

  • What did you downgrade or skip to bring costs down?
  • Anything you thought was worth spending more on vs not worth it?
  • Any tips for keeping costs reasonable without regretting it later?
  • Who did you use and would you recommend them?
  • Anyone we should avoid?
  • What would you do differently if you were doing your kitchen again?
  • Were there any hidden costs or surprise expenses that caught you off guard?

Also curious if people found flat-pack/custom joinery mix worthwhile, or if there are certain things suppliers upsell that aren’t really necessary.

Feels like every little thing adds up fast 😅

Good barber for advice?

Hi all, I am looking for a men's barber to provide me advice. I already go to a couple of different barbers but they are very reliant on my direction as to what I want, so I am looking for something different.

I am balding and have a beard for the first time ever and I don't really know what to do to make it all look good. I am sort of looking for someone to cut it and shape my beard but also provide advice and direction in how to make it look good at the same time.

Any thoughts?
