Questions for emerging and existing LPs

1. (existing) What do you wish you had when you began investing in funds in terms of education/ support/ resources?

2. (emerging) What do you wish you could have as you prepare to angel invest/ enter the venture ecosystem?

Obviously, ROI is core.

But, thinking outside of the box, particularly for Millennial and Gen Z investors/ parents of emerging investors, some topics to also consider are things like:

  1. Personalized education (creating a thesis, diligence, pacing)
  2. How to reconcile with investing within imperfect systems (venture capital)
  3. Understanding your positioning within power systems
  4. How to become a conscious and intentional steward of capital
  5. How your portfolio can represent an extension of self
  6. Someone you trust to support you as you progress through your journey

Keen to read responses.

Thank you!

Has anyone started a fund as an exempt reporting advisor?

Initially, I was planning on forming an SPV, but the issue is that I want my clients who would invest into it to have the option to invest in multiple VC funds. Not just a single entity (example: one fund/ company).

Therefore, the ideal path would be to start my own fund and invest from that fund, but I'm not a licensed investment advisor.

Has anyone started a fund (US) as an exempt reporting advisor?

I'm not a licensed securities broker, so I can't intro my clients to fund managers and negotiate for carried interest, etc.

So this is the workaround.

Alternatively, can anyone offer other perspectives on how to set up a financial instrument that can serve my clients adequately? Giving them the option to invest into more than one VC fund through my investment vehicle.

Thank you!

Sponsorship dilemma

Hi all,

I've just pivoted my startup into a private capital advisory practice.

As part of the revenue model, I'll be negotiating with VC funds for my services.

I've just spoken to my lawyer and she's recommending I get my securities broker license.

I'm happy to study and take the tests, but the issue is sponsorship.

I don't personally know anyone who owns a FINRA-member firm, and I'm unsure whether someone would sponsor me if I weren't formally employed by them.

Can anyone suggest practical next steps or direct me to entities that sponsor independents?

Thank you!
