Thanks! I caught it blooming!
Thanks for someone who posted the original Id. I had fun learning more about the plant!
Here some Mullein facts that I hope can help dispel the hysteria and emotional response I got last time. Im not saying it's a miracle plant. Im just saying it's actually OK to let it grow in an inner city alley way. lol
>Seeds have no specialized structures for long distance dispersal. ... mullein rarely establishes on new grounds without human intervention because its seeds do not disperse very far.
Hoshovsky, Marc C. (August 2001). "Element Stewardship Abstract for Verbascum thapsus" The Global Invasive Species Initiative.
>The necessity of bare ground for seedling emergence and establishment means that there is only a narrow "window in time" during which mullein colonization may occur...
>The rapid reduction of bare ground within an early successional field can result in only a single germination successfully reproducing before the population "disappears" into a dormant seed pool ...
>Mullein is easily out competed in areas with a densely vegetated ground cover but readily grows in disturbed sites. Because of its low dispersal rate, the establishment of mullein in a particular site depends primarily on the presence of dormant seeds in the soils. It is an ephemeral plant which is eventually displaced by other plants in undisturbed sites....

Like MANY weeds yes their seeds can last a 100yrs! Nothing special there! The only reason this ONE popped up is because I did clear the field for wild flowers. I'll be happy to see more next season.
