My kids ain't doing O/A levels..
I recently started working as a psychologist in a hospital, and the patterns I'm seeing among the younger generation have completely changed how I plan to educate my own kids.
A massive portion of the young adults coming to me for therapy belong to the O/A Level stream, and the recurring themes are alarming:
- Early substance use used as a coping mechanism or status symbol.
- Messy relationship dynamics, including juggling multiple partners and normalized cheating.
- Extreme drama and a total lack of emotional regulation.
- Completely fractured family bonds and a deep disconnect from their parents.
I know the Cambridge system has its perks, but the toxic subculture, intense peer pressure, and detachment from core values just aren't worth it.
As a psychologist, I see the emotional price tag attached to this environment. As a parent, I will not be willing to pay it. My kids probably will not do O/A Levels unless I find a good solution.
