New jam with the EP-133, EP-136, and Roland S-1.

Made good progress on my new project this evening. I need to add in the one-shot vocal samples and build out all the scenes, but wanted to share. I’m still working on mixing with the 136. Tonight’s jam was more about fun and I had the idea to record a quick play through.

Keystep 37mk2 missing Mutate LCD slider?

In the manual when you press the mutate button and hold, it shows a slider bar going left to right. Depending on when you let go modifies the intensity. Does the new keystep 37 not do that because of the new encoder options to change mutate parameters?

What am I doing wrong?

Hey all,

Pressing play on the keystep makes all devices start playing, and pressing stop resets the play position like it should. However, when I'm in Seq or Arp modes the EP-133 and Roland both start playing for one note whenever I press a key on the keystep. Because of this I can't play around with different notes for arps without hearing one note at a time being played on the other devices per keypress on the Keystep.

Can I not use the arp mode without it triggering the other devices? I’d like to play just the arps until I’m ready to record. Maybe I’m missing something fundamental of how the keystep works? Maybe what I actually want is for the playback to NOT pause when I don't press any keys on the keystep?

From searching around online I think this is called Arm to Start, and it's possibly a setting in the Midi CC on computer. I have a Mac and downloaded the software (previously updated the firmware using the arturia software center app). But, I don't see the Arm to Start setting that's supposed to toggle this feature.

Here are mu connections:

Keystep midi out -> EP-133 midi in.
Ep-133 midi out -> Roland S1 midi in.

Keystep 37 mk2 settings:

Midi output channel: 1
Midi input channel: all
Keyboard Play channel: 1
Send program change: on
Midi thru: off
Clock send: on
Transport send: on
Transport receive: on (this let's the EP-133 start playback on all).

EP-133 Settings:

Midi clock: in
Midi channel: 10
Midi through: on
Restart: on

Roland S-1 Settings:

Channel: 1
Through: on
Pattern Change Channel: 1

Thank you so much for the help!

Arm to Start on Keystep 37 mk2?

Hello!

I just got my Keystep 37 mk2 and have a question regarding the transport signals. My keystep is sending midi out to my EP-133 KO2, and then the EP-133 KO2 sends midi out to my Roland S-1.

Pressing play on the keystep makes all devices start playing, and pressing stop resets the play position like it should. However, when I'm in Seq or Arp modes the EP-133 and Roland both start playing for one note whenever I press a key on the keystep. Because of this I can't play around with different notes for arps without hearing one note at a time being played on the other devices per keypress on the Keystep

From searching around online I think this is called Arm to Start, and it's possibly a setting in the Midi CC on computer. I have a Mac and downloaded the software (previously updated the firmware using the arturia software center app). But, I don't see the Arm to Start setting that's supposed to toggle this feature.

Anyone have any ideas on how to stop the other device triggers?

Keystep midi out -> EP-133 midi in.
Ep-133 midi out -> Roland S1 midi in.

Keystep 37 mk2 settings:

Midi output channel: 1
Midi input channel: all
Keyboard Play channel: 1
Send program change: on
Midi thru: off
Clock send: on

First song in my Space Race series with EP-133 & S-1.

Hey!

This is the first song I've ever recorded, and I'm doing a "Space Race" series this summer. The EP-133 is the backbone of the operation, with the S-1 handling bass and melody.

I just got the S-1 a coupe weeks ago. I sampled in the bass line from the S-1 in order to play a second pattern on it during the song. The space recordings are from the NASA archives. Several hits are from JFK's moon speech. I feel like this song is truly "mine".

Something else that's fun. I took this quicktime video, threw it into AI stem splitter, combined them back into a single audio file with Audacity and loaded it onto the SP-1 stem player. One stem each for bass, melody, drums, and samples. It's so fun to play my own song back with all the SP-1 capabilities. I'll try to record the SP-1 playing this track and upload another video.

Hope you enjoy!

Can the Roland S-1 Transpose Arpeggios?

Hello!

I'm still learning my first synth, the Roland S-1, and am really liking the arpeggiator. Is it possible for me to hold a chord with "Hold" on, and then use the keyboard to transpose that chord? Maybe I'm approaching it the wrong way.

What I'd like to do is transpose the arp pattern loop live by selecting a new root note for the chord. Or, record that in to a pattern. I think. I'm still learning synth jargon.

Thanks!

Roland S-1: Shift + Tempo/Value increments in 10, not 1

I've watched a lot of youtube videos on the S-1, and not a single one has mentioned that holding shift when turning the value knob goes in increments of 10, not 1. Super helpful. Thought I'd share in case others haven't noticed.

Sidekick with K.O.2 and Roland Aria S-1?

Hey all

I’ve been routing my Roland S1 into the input of my knockout then I have midi out from the knockout going to midi in on the Roland S1. Or works okay but I have to be mindful of the input level of I’ll get clipping.

Would the new Sidekick make my two devices work together better? Is a mixer like this something I should consider with my current setup of two devices?

Thanks!

My S-1 Aira Compact is arriving in a few days. This is my first synthesizer and I'm curious what the best learning resources are. Mark Young on youtube seems good and I've started the first couple of videos.

What are some good resources to learn how to get the most of of this device? I've started reading the official manual online. Any other suggestions?

Thanks!

Hey All,

I'm wanting to start my synth journey. I got a *ducks* EP-133 KO2 last year and have really enjoyed sampling and starting to make music again after a long time. I got a cheap midi keyboard (MidiPlus Tiny +) and am having fun with the instrument samples on the KO2. I want a Dawless setup.

I'd like to use my KO2 as the drum machine in my setup for now, and use the S-1 to play along with it. In the future another Aira to do bass lines?

To the point of my post, I'm having a hard time finding a used S-1 for anything close to the retail price. None of Facebook Marketplace, Guitar Center, Gear Exchange, or Ebay. If there are, the price + shipping is more than retail.

Does anyone know why? And ideally, where I can find a used one? I tried looking for a Volca Keys, but would like to find an S-1 instead. I'm in OKC, and the local music gear scene isn't great. Any advice is appreciated.

Thanks!
