A 16 year old girl’s 1901 relationship drama
I found these 2 letters in a box of old papers I picked up from a local antique store. Based on the other letters in the box and some census data, I figure Hellen, the person who is being written to, was born In 1885 and passed at some point in the 1970s. That puts her at about 16 years old at the time of receiving these letters.
Here is a transcription of what the letters say (I always have a hard time reading old cursive).
Letter 1:
Cleveland, Ohio July 5th 1901
Dear Helen:—
Some weeks ago you promised to write and let me know what evening I could see you. I have received no letter ~~I am~~ not wanted. This is all right as I cannot force you and I do not care to go where I am not wanted.
I will not keep your picture as you have been very good to give it to me for a week or two (Pardon me for keeping it this long, but really it has been a great pleasure for me to have your picture, at least when I could not see the original as often as I liked). I have been true to my promise and all other promises I have made you.
I have tried something impossible when I tried to get you to —
You will always be the same Dear girl to me in the future as in the past.
I do not think your folks would have objected to your writing to me once in a while, as I could not see you
I hope this will not keep us from being friends at least.
Helen what ever you hear about other girls (although I know you do not care) and Ed Sonn Halter and so on — they will never be to me what you have been — My dear Helen —
I hope you and your folks will forgive me for writing such a letter.
May God bless and give you your good health.
I remain always your friend Ed
Letter 2:
July 8th
Dear Helen:
I would like to
see you at the house this eve.
