About to buy a Voltra - Purchase Checklist

EDIT - forgot to mention...I have small space and I'm planning on selling my house and moving soon.Voltra is a better option for me than selectorized with a rack because I will need to assemble and disassemble then do that again later after I move. Sorry for forgetting the context.

Hello all,

I'm about to buy a Voltra! I have made a list of items to get and I wanted some feedback from the community.

My current setup...

No rack. I was planning on it but my family has decided we're going to sell our house so I'm going to hold off for now.

Mounted Rogue pull up bar

REP Nighthawk bench

REP x Peppins dumbells

Apex Nordic Back Extension v3

Squat Harness v4

I figured a Voltra is perfect for my current situation cause traditional cables with plates or bumpers won't work. I'm planning to grab the following...

Voltra "starter kit" (carbon bar, one d handle, strap mount) - I'll use the strap mount on my deck post outside

Voltra foot plate for a low cable point

Voltra Quick Change bar mount for a high cable point from my pull up bar

For some attachments...

Rogue v grip bar - bicep and triceps

Darko Shorty - good for connecting multiple handles

Prime ROT8 - the individual paddle grips look awesome for lat pulls and bent over rows

Spud Kaiju Long Ab Strap - triceps, lat prayers, face pulls, and ab crunches

Darko Danglers - single handed tris, rear delt flies etc

Anything else I should look into as a new user?

Thanks, I'm excited!

Voltra or FT - I'm moving soon...

Hello all,

Looking for some feedback from the community. I was planning out a full basement gym in my current house. I have some reppins and a Nighthawk bench. I also have an Apex Nordic Back Extension v3. For cardio I use a Zwift Ride bike. Next up was going to be a rack with barbell and weights (short one cause the ceilings are low) and a FT.

A couple weeks ago we had a flood 🫤. Set me back a bit. My gear was fine, I just had to wipe it up. But needless to say we're looking for a new house after repairing all the damage.

I will obviously wait to get a barbell, weights and a rack. But, I was thinking, what about Voltra? I could buy it with the nomad bundle for the plate you stand on and I could use it now for some exercise and later when we move and I finally get a rack up. I really only need unilateral movements for my training so one Voltra should be fine. The only bilateral movement I'd do often is chest flies and I don't mind doing that unilaterally. The eccentric overload seems very intriguing since I've been working on slow and controlled eccentrics lately. I also have some injuries where emphasis on the eccentric is really helpful.

In terms of FT I was looking at the Fenrir and Dane 2.0. I think both of those could easily work for what I need at a fair price. Athena also looks interesting.

I get the cons with Voltra, charging battery, it'll become obsolete eventually while real weights are forever, you have to replace the cable often, etc, but the pros are also very nice! No setup is a huge plus, you can bring it with you easily and keep your rack clean, the chains and eccentrics, micro loading more weight, tracking your exercises etc. I guess the biggest con is cost which is definitely high. I can really only afford one right now.

Having a hard time deciding. Can some Voltra and traditional FT owners give me some advice? Thanks!

Dane 2.0 or PR 5000 with DM Ibex - (short ceiling requirement)

Hello all,

I'll start with my issue, I have an 87" ceiling in my basement gym. I want to get a rack and cable setup. The current Dane 2.0 will not fit, but I heard there might be a shorter one in the near future. Bang for buck the Dane looks incredible since it has nearly everything in one package for reasonable prices.

On the other hand a REP PR 5000 with a Dialed Motion Ibex 2.0 would work for me now, if I get the 80" rack. The drawback is I have to order the Ibex next week and wait till December or January for it to come. Also it'll be plate loaded and selectorized seemed nicer to my wife and I, but that's not a real deal breaker since I plan to get bumpers anyway.

My goal is to have a rack for bench, squat, and deadlifts, while also having cables for lat pulldown, row, and functional trainer movements. I have some reppins and a nighthawk already as well as a Nordic bench.

Let me know what you all think!

EDIT, looks like the Fenrir is an option too!

Advice on a cable setup (DM Ibex, Athena, REP Lat/Row attachment, others?)

Hi all!

I'm slowly building up my home gym. As of now I have some Reppin dumbells, a Nighthawk bench, a Tib Bar Guy Nordic Back Extension v3, a Rogue wall mounted pull up bar, some resistance bands, and a TBG Slant Stack. For cardio I have a Zwift indoor bike. In theory I have enough for a lot of exercise variation, but like many of us I want more.

I'm looking into getting some cables. One of my favorite exercises at the gym is lat pulldowns and I'd love a cable machine for these. I also would like the ability to do some other functional trainer exercises at home that I use resistance bands for right now. I was quite sold on the REP Adonis for the 1:1 and 1:2 split to handle a large variety of exercises, but my setup is in the bottom floor of my split level house and we have drop tile ceilings. The ceiling height is about 86" and the Adonis as well as a variety of other lat/row machines need at least 92" 🫤.

I do want a rack as well so since my basement height is a limitation, I figured I could get an 80" rack with a cable attachment system. Looking into PR-5000 (maybe 4000) and one of the systems I listed above.

DM Ibex 2.0 - This is my front runner. Dialed Motion seems so innovative and their system looks smooth and easy to install. This setup will provide both heavy work like lat pulldowns, but with lighter change plates I can also use these as a functional trainer as well. The drawback is it can only be used with plates, but I was going to get plates for the rack with a barbell eventually anyway. Also a slight drawback is the timing; preorder at the end of July and I'll have to wait until December, but that might be for the best anyway since I'll wait until Black Friday to buy my rack and some plates.

REP Athena - My bottom option. The functional trainer aspects look great, but for a nice lat pulldown this seems like it'll be a bit of a hassle. Also very expensive. Unless people can convince me otherwise, this one is likely out of the running.

REP Lat Pulldown Attachment (selectorized) - This is my close second choice. Having a nice selectorized 1:1 stack in the back of a PR-5000 will not only make weight changes seamless, but it'll also provide a nice anchor point for the rack. I also wouldn't have to wait for delivery like the DM Ibex. I can even do many functional trainer exercises with this, just not the dual ones (which is few for my training anyway). I figured for the few functional trainer exercises I can't do with this, I could use my bands on the rack.

Need some advice on what everyone thinks of these three and if there are other options. I'm very smitten with REP, that's why I mentioned a lot of their gear. Also, before someone asks the Ares 2.0 looks great but insanely expensive! I'm not even comfortable with the price of Athena when IMO I can make a $1500 selectorized lat pulldown work or the dual Ibex for approximately the same price.

Thanks!

Tib Bar Guy Apex, REP Nighthawk, or FA ABX

EDIT: Gluck put out his review of the Apex as well and it looks fantastic! I'm still not convinced though until I see it in the wild and users get their hands on it. I'm leaning towards Nighthawk unless everyone raves about the Apex when they receive theirs. FA ABX is off the list for now since it has the same downsides as Apex IMO, but seems like Apex is just better.

Maybe I'll find a used bench for cheap for the time being.

Thanks for all the feedback everyone!

Hi all,

I see there's a lot of threads on this topic, but I didn't see much comparing these three directly possibly due to Apex availability.

Some background...

I've been doing home workouts for a while mostly with kettlebells and resistance bands. I only have two weights for kettlebells and honestly resistance bands are quite finicky so time for an upgrade. I did a ton of research and went with Rep x Peppin dumbbells! Very excited to get these!

I don't have a traditional bench though. I do however have a TBG Nordic Back Extension v3 though and use it for nordic curls, back extensions, and split squats. I find it to be very sturdy and great for posterior chain exercise. It was a hassle to put together though.

I'll mention I have leg injuries (broken ankle and knee tendonopathy) so a solid leg developer is top of my want list. Leg extensions paired with the nordics and back extensions from my current bench will likely work out better than squats for me. I do not have a rack or cables so I'd likely use plates with the leg developer I end up getting. Also bands seem to work.

Lastly I'll mention I don't have a ton of space. Although I like many of the attachments from these benches, I only have a small area to store anything without my wife killing me 😄.

Bench Homework

I've been doing a lot of research on benches since I can't really use the nordic bench for upper body work and I want a good leg developer.

The Apex I heard of since I'm in the TBG ecosystem already. It looks phenomenal and has a ton of handy attachments! The Hybrid Fitness preview and the GGR review were both glowing so that's a big positive. I wouldn't get all the attachments but many look very creative. Some look iffy though like the noticeable wobble from pull-ups and dips on the power tower. The leg developer looked really good.

The FA ABX is similar to the Apex, but honestly I think the Apex ecosystem looks more promising. I do love the half bench split though, that's a really slick option. FA leg developer also looks good.

My last option is by far the most reliable. The REP Nighthawk is simple and just solid. It's readily available and lightweight. It has a very reliable company behind it as well whereas the other two companies can be shaky from what I've seen. It looks like it's the easiest to assemble. It has by far the least attachments of the three, but does seem to have the most important one with the leg developer. Reviews seem pretty solid for the developer especially with extensions. I'm less worried about curls since I can do nordics for that.

Can anyone give me some feedback on these three? I'm not in a massive rush to get one, so optimally it would be handy to see reviews of the Apex when more get theirs.

Ankle Surgery a week ago - Good Timing!

Since I'm stuck on the couch for quite a while after fracturing my ankle, the steam controller arriving at my step yesterday was clutch! Will likely play docked on the steam deck till my wife and I make a more ergonomic situation for my PC, but docked with the steam deck + controller is perfect 🤌!

Boot Advice - 1 week post op

Hi all!

Happy I found this sub! I'm one week post op for a distal fibula fracture I got playing basketball. I'm 39(M) and in pretty good shape so when the surgeon told me surgery would be the only way to ensure it heals properly and I can get back to being active, I felt like I had no other choice.

My splint was getting very loose two days ago and I figured the swelling decreased and my ankle was shifting and didn't feel secure. I originally was going to see my surgeon 3 weeks post op to get into the boot, but saw him yesterday to look at the loose splint. He said it looked really good and got me into the boot!

As happy as I was to move to the next stage and get out of the rigid splint, I realized the boot is more uncomfortable. I have staples in the outer ankle and one button staple on my inner boney part of my ankle that sticks out. He said the stitches can come out in a week, so I'm in this tight boot that's digging into each side of my staples, especially the inner boney side. Also my foot is quite swollen and bruised from the surgery so the tight boot hurts quite a lot on my worn down foot.

Questions for everyone...

  1. Did he move me to the boot too soon? I imagine at two or three weeks they can take out the staples and get you fitted then. I also imagine more of the swelling has died down by then so the boot is more manageable.

  2. Should I adjust the boot? I have already adjusted quite a lot to accommodate the new pain. While I'm on the couch elevating all day I try to loosen everything up, which helps, but when I have to get up onto my scooter moving my foot back into place aggravates my worn down foot and the staples on each side. It was kind of nice that the splint kept everything rigid in one place to prevent rubbing.

  3. Is there any padding you can add to the boot to help with discomfort?

  4. Is the boot supposed to be quite tight when strapped in? The tech putting mine on seemed a bit confused (he may have been new). He originally had me in a smaller boot and I asked if we could go a size up. Maybe I need another size up from this?

I'd appreciate any advice!
