Arc Furnaces and Power Question

At some point I want to write a love letter how much I love this game!

Before I get to my question, I do want to say quick I love how this game does not hold your hand. Back in the day, games like this were complex and were not easy to master. Yes, it can be frustrating to deal with all the different death spirals but that is what makes the game a challenge and a complex puzzle to tackle and workout. Love it!

But I have a question at the moment...

I recently stared upgrading my blast furnaces to arc furnaces.

But AFs need 4mhz of power.

I added seven of these and needed to add another 4 boilers and turbines etc.

My current turbines generate 8mhz (four of those wheel things). So building one set just powers two AFs. (yes you get four more from the low steam turbines too).

Am I missing something here? I feel like I am better off with regular blast furnaces as they don't need power.

I just reached the purple construction part tech but since AFs unlock before that tier I was thinking that the tech at that level should be sufficient to power it.

I am currently using 70mhz on my island. I am straining to build enough electricity to power it all. Since I have a lot of oil, I started going back to using advanced diesel!

What do you all do at this stage of the game?

Thanks!

Movement Questions

Hi, I have a question about moving and picking units (if allowed).

Scenario 1

  1. Activate system 211.

  2. Move Carrier from 212 to 318 (assume Carrier II with Grav Drive).

  3. Can the Carrier pick up the infantry in 318?

  4. Then move to 317, and finish at 211.

  5. Use infantry that was picked up to invade Andeara.

Question in step 3.

Scenario 2.

I think I know the answer but want to confirm.

  1. Activate 212.

  2. Can you move the Carrier in 212? For example if it has a two move (Carrier II) then it could move one out and then one back into 212?

I am guessing no, since you can't move units in an activated system?

Thank you!

Pls Explain The Fracture?

I have been playing TI4 on Discord with both expansions and gotten the hang of it for the most part.

I am more familiar with the PoK expansion though.

I get the breakthrough. But I don't really understand The Fracture...

Or more, why would I bother with the Fracture?

I know that is a dumb question but I really don't get it!

Thanks!

Why Anno 117 is struggling

Recently, Taka released a video documenting Anno 117's struggles.

Anno 117 After 6 Months — Success or Failure?

In my opinion here are some of the reasons.

  1. The Buildings.

While 117 looks gorgeous, it lacks a certain flair. The industrial zones of Anno 1800 were distinct and created a hellish landscape (and the sound effects) in contrast to the clean looking investor buildings. In 117, there is little visually to show how an industrial building differs from other buildings.

  1. Ships.

I think 117 missed an opportunity to rethink how trade works. Ships worked better in 1800 as ranged combat represented by cannons fit the setting. In 117, ship combat was by and large not much different than land combat. Ramming and boarding were how fleet actions were determined. Also, ironclads were cool and distinct. In 117 you simply don't have that equivalent.

  1. No Roads (an extension of point 2)

The Roman Empire was held together by their road network. Many original Roman roads have survived to this day. It seems to me establishing road networks and doing trade via caverns would be more in keeping with the theme instead of shoe horning in the island mechanic.

Yes, the Romans used ships to trade, but the Empire's territory was mostly continental Europe.

IMO the lack of imagination here holds the game back. If we are just going to use the same basic game mechanics, why would I not just play 1800?

  1. The Overall Setting

I haven't played older Anno games but 1800 IMO was the sweet spot in terms of setting. The industrial/Victorian age gives a wide variety of industries, from the rural activates of raising pigs and farms to building automobiles.

From 1800 to 1900 was a period of rapid technological change. In a 100 years we went from Waterloo to the Somme. The age of sail to dreadnoughts. To the beginning of aviation and so on.

While I like the Roman setting, it just doesn't have that pizazz.

Anyway, those are just my two cents :)

Is 5th edition or 4th?

I used to play Talisman a lot and at a BGG con last week I introduced the game to my group. It was 4 edition.

I used a lot of house rules to speed up play and we had a good time

Now I like to purchase the game and see 5th edition is out.

The reviews for 5th say that at 100 cards that is way too little.

I read the expansions but they sound like different game variants? Or do they add cards to the base game too?

And which do you all prefer? 5th or 4th?

Thanks!

Is there a scenario to take Rex here?

I don’t see where I get the six influence.

If I can take Rex should I?
