Application from Canada

Sent in my application and documents on Sept 26 via Canada post and it’s shown me it’s arrived in the Austin zip code for the ITIN head office.

It’s been “waiting for pickup” now for 3 days? Has anyone encountered this? Does ITIN do batch pick ups or something? TIA

Not promoting anything and not connected to any service. Just sharing a real comparison because I spent a few months trying to fix my resume using tools like Resume.io, Zety, and Resume Genius, and then later tried a Canadian HR service (Ressy).

I started with the resume builders because they are the easiest option. You pick a template, plug in your job history, tweak the wording a bit, and you are done. It looks decent on paper. Clean layout, neat formatting, no real effort required.

The issue I ran into was that nothing really changed in a meaningful way. I could rewrite bullet points a dozen times and it still ended up sounding like a list of duties. It was technically correct but it did not feel like it was saying anything different about me. It just looked like a better organized version of the same content.

At some point I realized I was spending more time adjusting formatting and wording than actually improving how my experience was being presented.

When I tried a human rewrite, the process felt different. A lot of what I originally wrote got cut or rewritten completely. Some roles were shortened more than I expected. A few things I thought were important were removed entirely.

At first that felt a bit uncomfortable, but the end result was actually clearer. It stopped reading like a job description and started reading more like a summary of impact and outcomes. Less “what I was responsible for” and more “what actually changed because I was there.”

That was probably the biggest difference. Not better formatting, but better judgment on what to keep and what to remove.

Resume builders are still useful for getting something together quickly. They are fine if you are starting from zero or just need a clean layout.

But they do not really help with figuring out what to emphasize or how to position your experience in a competitive market. That part is still on you.

The human approach felt more like someone stepping back and saying “this is what actually matters here” instead of just helping me format what I already wrote.

I am still early in using it so I do not know how much it changes outcomes yet, but the resume definitely feels different when I look at it now compared to what I was producing with builders.

Curious if anyone else has gone through the same thing where you start with the tools, try to refine it yourself, and only later realize the issue is not formatting but how the experience is being framed
