GIMP thumbnails?

I've been using digikam for a while. My primary editing tool is Affinity Photo, and digikam doesn't show thumbnails for those files. I can accept that; Affinity is a commercial application that's not the mainstream choice.

Now I've started playing with GIMP. I thought that, since GIMP is also open source and its data files are documented (which a commercial product's files might not be), digikam would show thumbnails for those files. It doesn't; instead, it has a little green mountain symbol.

Is there a config setting I'm not aware of, or does digikam not show thumbnails for anything other than tiff and jpeg?

Problems with darktable - won't load

Running the latest build of DT on a Mac Mini (Tahoe 26.5.2) and cannot get DT to reliably load.

Usually it hangs (spinning beachball) on "loading utility modules: midi" for about 2 minutes; during that time the system shows DT as "not responding".

I've waited it out a couple of times and finally got DT to load and set the default parameters, only to find I couldn't quit the app! It gives me spinning beachball and system says "not responding"; after waiting 5 minutes I finally force-quit the app.

Restarted the machine, deleted DT and its config files, re-installed it from a freshly downloaded file, and it's still hanging on the "midi" module, but now (assuming I have the patience to wait it out) DT it hangs indefinitely on "initializing Lua" (at least 5 minutes) and I have to force-quit.

Before I give up completely and trash DT for good, do you have any suggestions?

Before the "what is that smoke I see?" posts...

From ODA:

"The Oregon Department of Agriculture Smoke Management Program will conduct test fires in the Silverton, Stayton, and Sublimity area this afternoon with the possibility of open field burning to follow. There also is a possibility of other test fires in surrounding fire districts.

Test fires are preliminary field burns authorized to assess smoke evacuation and to determine if additional field burning is advisable during current weather conditions."

2026 Cheap Composition Book review: Top Flight

Background (scroll down if this bores you):

I use composition books for journaling, task management, reading notes, etc. As a result I go through a half-dozen or so every year. I’m also a fountain pen user (exclusively), so I can’t use just any composition book! I’ve found that the notebooks made in Vietnam are almost always fountain pen friendly, so I look for those.

Every year during back-to-school sales I stock up on comp books while they’re cheap. If a find a brand I haven’t tried before, I’ll pick one up for testing. If it works well with my pens and inks, I’ll pick up several.

This year, I found that Top Flight is being made in Vietnam again, so I picked one up. For those who have complained about the increasingly flimsy covers of modern composition books, these are a welcome find. They’re not like the heavy cardboard covers of a decade ago, but they’re noticeably stiffer than anything else I’ve seen recently. The paper is a little different than most of the Vietnamese papers I’ve been using the last few years; it’s thinner and the left hand margin is wider. The paper is decently smooth, but it will bleed slightly with very wet nib and ink combinations, and there is a touch of feathering if you look very closely. Not the very best I’ve found, but usable. If you’re the kind who wants stiffer covers, the slight paper deficiencies might be worth the trade off.

Yummy Yummy regulars: heat level?

I find the spice level at Yummy Yummy to be perfect, but my wife says it's all too hot for her to handle. (We're talking just the regular dishes, not those marked as "spicy").

Has anyone ever asked for "mild" spice level, and were they able to do it?
