Suggestions for allotment birthday gifts

It's a male allotment friend's birthday soon. I need to get a suitable gift. I don't have a massive budget, but I'd like to get something practical, that will last.

I was thinking maybe a nice street legal folding knife like an opinel or mam (or whatever the Portuguese brand is).

However, I am open to your suggestions

This is for a newish male pensioner, who doesn't act his age!

Thanks!

Good lunar sowing day today apparently. Anyone sow by the moon?

Not something I've ever knowingly adhered to. Just curious if anyone does lunar sowing and if it works for them?

Do you remove first fruit or do anything else with your peppers and chillies?

Probably not the best pictures, but just after some general advice.

I grew this snack pepper from seeds removed from supermarket fruit.

The plant is still quite squat, but has about 5 or 6 fruit. A couple not far off the size I was hoping for.

I haven't done anything to this plant other than feed (rarely) and support it with a stick. It's in a 20L pot.

I've seen various advice like, you should remove the first fruit and strip the lower leaves and stems. I've also seen people advocating topping plants (obviously at a much earlier stage than this).

Just interested to know if there are any things I can do to optimise and promote fruiting?

I have other peppers and chillies that are starting to fruit.

Thanks 🙏🏻

This Marc Leclair album is incredible, but is there anything else?

Kudos and massive thanks to the person who shared this album in here.

It is incredible, really good for my brain.

Anyway, are there other Marc Leclair albums I should be looking at and anything else in a similar vein by other artists?

Link for anyone interested in particularly brilliant glitchy, crackly ambient stuff.

A few small positives

I know this sub is lopsided, a lot of negative experiences and I'd like to chip in a few small positives.

Full disclosure: I'm still titrating (8 months in and only just hit 60mg 2weeks ago). These things aren't tied to executive function, but they do have an impact on it indirectly.

A few things I've observed.

  • I'm not ruminating as much
  • I don't feel the anxious, impulsive need to reply to people asap
  • If people are annoyed at me, I don't automatically assume it's my fault
  • I don't feel the need to jump in and endlessly explain myself

These may seem like small things, but honestly, the amount of anxiety, stress and energy this frees up is quite liberating.

A few examples.

Last week I disclosed something quite personal during a conversation with a "friend" , they had been doing the same (discussing health issues). When I disclosed, they got annoyed and shut the conversation down. I haven't heard from them for a week or more.

Normally, something like that would turn me inside out and eat my brain. I was able to park it and get on. They came back to me today and suggested I had caught them off guard and they weren't prepared for something like that.

Anyway, I told them I hadn't intended to upset them and that was that. I didn't feel the need to defend myself for having had cancer and I left it at that.

Another acquaintance has been in touch tonight, they seem to just contact to mine me for personal information. Normally, I'd be immediately replying and get drawn into a conversation where I might disclose information I'd later regret.

So, that's not happening. I'm not jumping when people contact me and I am not letting it upset me.

I hope this doesn't seem shallow, or minor. I think these types of behaviours and the upset it causes are very debilitating for a lot of people with ADHD.

Relentless battering wind

Where I live in South Wales we have not only had a lot of showers, but really annoying, relentless, battering wind.

It's not great for planting out and leaving plants out to harden off risks damage from the wind.

It's really getting depressing 😔

It's been pretty constant for a few weeks now.

Fortunately I put a temporary net tunnell over some plants and I'm glad I did!

How about where you are?

Increased from 40 to 60mg occasional odd flutterry feeling in chest and high heart rate.

About a week and a half into 60mg. Been having an odd flutterry feeling in my chest occasionally in the main part of the day.

It just happened again and I decided to check my heart rate. It was pushing 140 and I wasn't doing anything.

I am hoping to see my GP this week and will discuss it with them, but I suspect they will push me back to my NHS prescriber, who is not easy to contact.

Has anyone else experienced this? Did it resolve?

Best decaf tea bags for everyday strong builders tea?

Since titrating up to 60mg of Atomoxetine I am finding even regular Lidl gold tea is making me feel awful.

I already ditched caffeinated coffee before starting.

Can anyone recommend a good tasting black tea for me - that hasn't had all of the joy sucked out of it? Just want something full flavoured - the ones I've tried so far have been really insipid.

I was going to try clipper, but it's £6 for 80.

A mini harvest from the garden, carrot thinnings and broad Beans

I only have a quarter plot in real terms. So I also grow in containers and beds in my garden.

Here are a few thinnings from my 30L carrot buckets and some broad beans.

Hoping for a decent harvest of carrots out of 5 buckets. Will also be sowing some direct when the potatoes come out at the allotment.

A little harvest tonight

So, I started these sprouting broccoli in march and this is my second cutting from the green and first from the purple.

Took 300g in total and a gem lettuce - and a load of onion scapes because of the erratic weather. Will use them in place of onion/chives/spring onions.

Happy with that, aside from the bolting issue!

Edit: Corrected typo (scale to scape).

Also noticed the camera angle makes it look like the king is holding the broccoli. But it is simply the angle deceiving you.

If you are in the UK be aware of recalls

Just a heads up, I was given Glenmark brand Atomoxetine yesterday that was subject to a recall in July 2024.

It should not be in circulation.

Fortunately I was aware of the manufacturer and because the medication had such a short date I checked the batch code on the MHRA site.

It's been returned and I got my script filled elsewhere. But, it should not have happened.

A few other brands were subject to recalls in the UK at the same time, Accord and Neuraxpharm.

Pharmacy gave me recalled medication from an old batch - how can that happen?

Just been to collect my Atomoxetine prescription which has taken longer than normal to fill.

The pharmacy gave me Glenmark brand which I was aware had been subject to some recalls over the last few years.

Since the expiry date was so short (July), I decided to check and sure enough the batch number was included in the recall.

Fortunately I haven't taken any. However since it took from Friday until today to fill, I have no medication for tomorrow.

Their resolution is to hand me back my script - tomorrow, to fill somewhere else. No apology, no offer to fill from their supplier.

This isn't some small independent, it's a well known pharmacy chain.

To be clear, I was polite and calm at all times, first they denied it was part of the recall and then when I said I was looking at the MHRA recall notice with the batch code in front of me they admitted it was.

My self saved sweet peas have started to flower!

Not the best pics, but it happened so fast. No sign yesterday and with the blistering heat today they have started to show.

How about you?

Who do you grow for?

These turnips are for grandad, he was delighted when I swung by this evening to give them to him - along with some new potatoes.

I also grow him rhubarb and radishes. He gets potatoes, broad beans, runners, blackcurrants and raspberries. His eyes light up when I hand him stuff from the allotment, it really makes his day.

I grow my son mini cucumbers (which have just started coming).

My wife loves winter squash and anything that reduces our shopping bill!

Anyway, that's enough of me, what do you grow specially for the people in your life?

Quiet allotment evenings are the best?

Don't get me wrong, I quite like a lot of the other plot holders on our site. But....

It's nice to quietly crack on without the social demands and sit peacefully for a few minutes to take it all in.

In the warmer weather with the light mornings and longer evenings i do like to frequent the extremities of the available light window.

On very hot days, that means super early morning and rubbing shoulders with the midges at dusk.

What about you ?

Does your auDHD come with excruciating social anxiety?

My life has been dominated by social anxiety and I basically became pretty reclusive on and off with phases of burnout.

I'm now titrating Atomoxetine which seems to be helping a bit, but I have no idea how to overcome it, or if it is even possible.

I got thinking about it because I always decline invitations to go anywhere or do anything that isn't known to me and within my limited comfort zone.

I mean, people don't even bother asking me these days.

Most useful knots for the allotment?

I made a kind of brassica cage shambles the other day. Mostly because I don't know any proper knots and struggle to remember them.

Anyway, I saw the constrictor hitch on a social media post. Did lots of swearing trying to learn it and have tied it repeatedly in a bid to commit to memory.

Hopefully I'll be able to resolve my mess into something that is a bit more structurally sound.

So, it got me thinking about what other knots would be good to learn for other structures and allotment jobs?

Do you have any go to knots?

Has anyone experienced joint pain since starting?

I've been on Atomoxetine almost 8 months. I've mostly been tolerating it but since upping from 35 to 40 mg a few things have changed.

I upped dose about 2 weeks ago.

I've been getting hot flushes and weird temperature regulation issues an hour or so after taking - lasting an hour or so.

But, the last week or so I have had a lot of upper arm pain (both sides). This has been like heavy, dull ache and pretty constant. Also I've had joint pain - including fingers, thumbs, wrists. Also neck pain.

There isn't anything I've been doing particularly that would cause it. I'm not getting great sleep through the pain.

Initially I thought it was a coincidence, but looking it up other people have reported it.

Is this something you've experienced? Does it go away?

Boc type recommendations

I know the sub is rightly filled with inferno posts at the moment.

However, I am interested in any recommendations of Boc adjacent artists and albums.

Is there anything you think I really need to listen to?

I normally put a good sprinkle in each pot or module. However, I often see people commenting about separating supermarket pots into individual plants.

What do you do? Single or multi?

My aim is plentiful basil for pesto etc.
