Interior designers: why this attitude towards “normal budget” clients?

I recently started looking for an interior designer for my 3BHK. My requirement was honestly very simple—clean, minimalist design, and I specifically wanted to avoid laminate-heavy work.

Budget: around 10L.

What I didn’t expect was how difficult the interaction itself would be.

Here’s what I faced:

  • A few designers straight up said: “We can’t do a 3BHK below 20 lakhs.” No discussion, no breakdown—just a flat rejection.
  • Some were outright rude. They took initial calls, but once I mentioned my requirements and budget, they either lost interest or never shared a quotation.
  • Transparency is almost non-existent. No clear mention of material brands, no proper specs—everything is vague in quotations. It feels like you’re expected to just trust the process blindly.
  • One case that really made me think: A friend of mine went with a very “famous” designer (huge following on Instagram). The result? Poor quality work. Within a short time, the plywood got termite issues and started deteriorating. So much for premium branding.
  • And then the classic: The moment I mentioned my budget (~10L), suddenly they’re “fully booked for 3 months” and not taking new projects.

I’m genuinely trying to understand this:

Is 10L really an unrealistic budget for a decent 3BHK with a minimalist approach? (Not luxury, just practical and clean.)

Or is there a bigger issue in the industry where:

  • Smaller budgets aren’t taken seriously
  • Clients are expected to just accept whatever is offered
  • And branding > actual execution quality

Would love to hear:

  • Have others faced similar behavior?
  • Any good experiences with designers who are transparent and respectful?

At this point, I’m seriously considering going with a carpenter + my own design instead of dealing with this.

From Favorite Restaurant to Worst Experience

Place: Swamisneh dining near Morya Gosavi temple

We had visited this place 2–3 times earlier when it was not very crowded, and honestly, the food and overall experience were really good back then. Because of that positive experience, we confidently decided to bring 9 guests here recently. Unfortunately, this visit turned into one of the worst dining experiences we’ve had.

The first thing we noticed was the complete lack of cleanliness. Food left behind by previous customers was still lying on the floor near the tables. It immediately gave a very unhygienic impression.

The food quality had also dropped badly. Chapatis were half-cooked, vegetables were undercooked, and overall the food did not feel fresh or properly prepared. On top of that, service was extremely poor. Nobody came to serve unless we called them repeatedly 4–5 times. Even basic refills felt like a struggle.

What shocked us the most was seeing some staff members handling tobacco and then serving food with the same hands. This is completely unacceptable for any restaurant.

We politely shared our feedback with the owner expecting at least some concern or accountability, but instead we were met with arrogance and a careless attitude. There was absolutely no seriousness about customer experience or hygiene.

The staff behaved as if they were doing customers a favor by serving food. The attitude was indifferent, and nobody seemed interested in providing proper service.

Considering the pricing, the food and service were definitely not worth it. Very disappointing experience, especially after recommending this place to guests based on our previous visits.

In Pune most of the old buildings have alternate balconies. Lot of people are extending the balconies to get extra space without any permission from society or PCMC.

Does the balcony extension legal, as this is deviating the original building plan?

What are the consequences of doing such kind of extension without PCMC permission?
