Snake aversion training without e-collar

Hi all. I’m looking to do some snake aversion training with my GSP, snakes are currently in hibernation atm and I want to get this done before spring (I’m in Australia btw).

In my state e collars are banned so I’m looking for alternatives. Does anyone know of any or should I make the weekend trip to another state?

Thanks in advance.

Mould. What are my rights/options?

Hey guys. I’m in nsw and moved into a house about 8 weeks ago and I have discovered mould in one of the bedrooms. I’m preparing to report it tomorrow but I’d like to get a better handle on what my rights and obligations are and what I can expect from REA and LL. The facts are as follows:

Mould appeared in several patches on the carpet in a single bedroom.

There are ventilation holes but I’m not sure about how good they are.

There is a window however there is no security bars, mesh, or fly screen and the window can be opened entirely. My cat has even used this as an invitation to go roaming, even with the window open just a little he will slide out like the terminator. The window faces the front.

I have closed the door to the room (it’s not in use) to stop mould from spreading.

I moved in 8 weeks ago.

The condition report notes no sign of mould.

I’m not sure how much responsibility lies with me vs LL since I’m reporting this 8 weeks after move it. I’m also not sure about how I can ventilate the room when there is no pest screen or security on the window.

Can anyone shed some light on this?

Thanks in advance.

Humblebrag and how cool are dogs?!

2 weeks ago my GSP and I started doing some nose work games, easy at first just finding liver treats in a jar with holes in the lid on an open field, sometimes behind a tree and sometimes in some taller grass.

Today we worked up to a much larger and much more bushy area. Added decoy jar, made sure he didn’t see me hide anything and took a long walk back around to get back to my boy. It’s no detective level but it was big for my goofus.

Watching him get excited to go and then to see him launch into action once I gave the command is such an amazing experience. He ran off in the direction from which I came back to him, wrong way, then he realised there was nothing there so he came back to the start and started being more careful about his search.

Nose in the air, nose to the ground, ignore the birds, he kept moving and closing up the circle. When he found the right jar he sniffed deep, looked up at me and I swear he smiled. I’m so proud of him.

Watching him in action is like watching the terminator. I am in awe of what he’s capable of with so little effort and time, I can’t imagine what he will be able to accomplish in a year. Regardless of future plans he’s my goofus and I love him.

Chickens?

Wondering if anyone has chickens around their GSP? Wife and I were discussing getting a few hens in spring when goofus here is about 6 months old but not sure about how much trouble he will be to them. Can you train them to leave the birds alone?

Pic for attention. Thanks in advance.

Edit: seems I’ll need to build a secure coop. Thanks for the advice.

Mouldy rabbit feed. Thoughts?

This bag of feed went mouldy. My fault. I’ve added small amounts to my compost pile with no issues but wondering how it would go with this much? Anyone have experience with this?

Training time of day

My 3 month old GSP is a handsome ball of energy. It’s been 2 weeks now and we’re making progress, we can walk on the lead to the park where we do our training (just come, sit, and road sense atm). We go to the park because fewer distractions than backyard.

However in the morning he’s nuts. Distracted, won’t listen, won’t do things I know he can do. It’s very frustrating and I’m almost empathetic for my school teachers. Afternoons he is great, almost like he’s done it before.

My question is should I perhaps be just taking him for a walk in the morning, let him sniff around and kind of “get it out of his system” or should I be strict, training is training? Could I perhaps exercise him longer in the morning before training to wear him out a little? It is dark in the morning when we go out, is that possibly playing a part?

Thanks in advance.

ELI5 Why did your body movement interfere with old tv reception?

When I was a kid we had old, antenna style tv. Sometimes it was fine, grainy but fine. Sometimes the reception depended entirely on where in the house you stood or even if you had one arm up, one down, and stood on one leg. A slight change in position could completely change the quality of picture on the tv.

So what would cause that?

For the dog.

For those that give guts/scraps to your dogs are there any parts that you don’t give/are bad?

does anyone dehydrate hide for dogs? I do the ears for a friend but I’m not sure about the hides.

Time of day, tire him out?

Hi everyone. I have just started training my 3 month old gsp and we have made progress! He can walk on the lead to the park (fewer distractions there than backyard) but if we go in the morning he gets distracted very easily and just wants to do his own thing. I’m wondering if perhaps a longer walk would get him to calm down a bit before we start our proper training (just come, sit, and road sense atm).

He seems to do better in the afternoons, just had a great walk and training session. Didn’t get waylaid by the kids playing basketball or the other dogs.

Does he need to “get it out of his system“ in the morning? sniff a bit, run around and then train or should I be strict? It’s dark when we go out in the morning if that matters.

Thanks in advance.

What’s killing my babies?

A 4-5 week old kit died a few days ago and today another one is on its way to the great meadow in the sky. Same symptoms, swollen genitalia followed by a messy bum, lethargy, and death. It only has happened to litters from one particular doe.

Not sure what is happening but I’d appreciate any advice.

Thanks in advance.
