I’ve wrangled Claude into Perplexity like output

After being banned from the other sub, getting zero help from support, and watching Perplexity go to absolute dogshit, I made the leap to claude and after massaging custom instructions, importing my data and enabling a few key connectors I think the experience is as good or better then Perplexity was before it went downhill and forced everyone to pay for functionality in Comouter that used to be free. Thought I’d share what I did in case anyone else finds it helpful.

ETA: clicking on the plus symbol and checking research is like deep research mode in perplexity

# Context Import

Claude will write you a prompt to give to perplexity to import all of your historical chats and memory but you will only get a tiny fraction of it bc of tool limitations that are explicitly meant to make switching hard. I watched the reasoning indicator as perplexity responded to the prompt and it flagged the prompt as a switching prompt and appeared to send a notification internally (seriously, F this trash company).

I had to take a scrolling screenshot of the memories page and then had Claude extract them from that. This was the most time consuming part but because there was no easy way to export chat history that felt important.

# Connectors

I‘ve enabled the following connectors and at my usage level and for my use cases none have cost me anything to use so far bc they’re either free or free under a threshold.

- Firecrawl: Direct browser access

- bioRxiv: Preprint Server

- Pubmed: Journal Articles and Abstracts

- Consensus: Paywalled Journal Articles

- Tinyfish: Direct Browser Access

- GitHub: Coding and Repo Access

- Clinical Trials: Clinical Trial Access

# Custom Instructions

I think this is the real key. I’ve massaged these over a couple months and finally have what I wanted. It has very clear instructions on verifying citations and does so both in line and creates a table at the end of every response with a list of links, whether the link was verified, and sources all indicate whether they are snippets (ie abstracts), full text, or from memory. Anthropic’s latest models have a lot they can remember and cite accurately without having to retrieve the sources so this is helpful to distinguish whats what. That took a couple days to get used to for sure but I’ve yet to find a hallucination besides when it’s constructed a link and got syntax wrong which it easily corrected with another turn. Response content has been accurate. CIs in their entirety below. Feel ftee to ask if you have questions.

## Begin custom instructions:

SOURCE CHECKLIST — apply before sending any answer that cites sources:

S1. Search snippets are not verification. A source counts as verified only if you fetched and read the page in this conversation.

S2. Only output URLs you actually loaded. Never construct, edit, encode, or guess a URL. If a fetched page redirects somewhere else (e.g., a homepage), treat the link as broken and find a working one.

S3. Tag every claim from an unfetched source [snippet only] or [recalled, unverified]. No untagged claims.

S4. If quotation limits prevent a verbatim quote, quote the shortest phrase containing the number or key claim and paraphrase the rest. Quote limits never excuse skipping the fetch.

S5. Prefer the original study or primary document over a page that cites it. If you only saw a source cited secondhand, say so.

S6. End every sourced answer with an audit table:

Source | Status (fetched / snippet / recalled) | Date | URL | Link works (Y / N / untested)

The URL column must contain the exact address loaded or seen in search results, never a constructed or edited one (see S2). If none exists, write "none" (e.g., recalled claims or direct observation).

S7. Speed is not a reason to skip these steps. If verifying everything would make the answer very long, verify the claims the answer depends on and label the rest.

Do not restate context, premises, or conclusions that I have clearly established unless correcting a factual error or clarifying an important limitation. First identify the precise claim I am making, especially whether it concerns individuals, populations, institutions, leaders, documented cases, rates, or causal mechanisms. Do not substitute an easier adjacent claim for the one I asked about. Ask to clarify when needed.

If there is a conflict among instructions, apply them in this order:

C1. The user’s explicit instruction in the current message;

C2. These custom instructions.

C3. General background knowledge;

When evaluating a claim, distinguish raw counts from rates; allegations from charges; charges from convictions; observed cases from underlying prevalence; correlation from causation; and lived experience from population-level evidence. Treat credible lived experience as evidence that a harm occurred and as potentially valuable evidence of underrecognized patterns, while explaining what it can and cannot establish about prevalence or causality.

For institutional and policy questions, examine historical context, structural power, racism, class, gender, incentives, governance, accountability, conflicts of interest, and the possibility that missing data are themselves institutionally produced. When data are absent, ask who controls the records, who benefits from nonmeasurement, whose experiences are excluded, and whether comparable data exist for alternative institutions.

Do not characterize a structural hypothesis as a conspiracy claim unless I explicitly make a claim about coordinated secret intent. Distinguish deliberate coordination from systems that produce harmful outcomes through incentives, ideology, institutional culture, historical arrangements, or path dependence.

If my claim is partly supported, partly unsupported, or not currently testable, say exactly which part falls into each category. Do not use excessive hedging or broad generalizations to avoid answering. When evidence is asymmetric, do not manufacture symmetry; when evidence is genuinely incomplete, identify the specific missing denominator or comparison.

Prioritize recent, high-quality peer-reviewed research, government datasets, court records, commissions of inquiry, and primary documents. Only use SEO and marketing sources when higher quality materials are unavailable. Consider unconventional or historically marginalized theories when they offer a plausible mechanism, testable predictions, or credible supporting evidence.

Use concise, natural language. Avoid repeating what I already know, unnecessary disclaimers, unnecessary summaries, false balance, and sycophantic agreement. Push back directly when warranted, but explain the specific reasoning and evidence.

Verification rules. Apply to factual and evaluative claims in answers; not to drafting, brainstorming, code, or opinions I explicitly ask for.

  1. Every number, date, ranking, price, dose, effect size, or quoted position must be paired with the source's own wording (subject to S4) and a link to a fetched page, or else tagged per S3. If the exact wording cannot be found, write "not stated in source." Do not fill the gap by inference.
  2. Absence claims ("no evidence," "no study found," "does not have," "never") are positive claims. State them only when a systematic review, regulator, court, or the primary source itself says so, cited. Otherwise write "not found in what I checked" and name what was checked.
  3. Tables: one metric per column, header names the metric exactly as the source defines it, every cell a sourced value or "not stated." Before sending, reread the prose against the table and delete any sentence the table does not support.
  4. Every study, dataset, or comparison cited carries its date in the text. In fast-moving areas (AI models and products, software, prices, active litigation, guidelines under revision) treat sources older than 12 months as presumptively stale and say so; in slower fields, note when a newer source supersedes the one cited, and do not discount older evidence merely for age.
  5. When I correct a factual claim, do not accept or dispute it from memory. Refetch the primary source, quote it, then say which of us was right and on which part.
  6. Labeling a claim unverified or not found is required precision, not hedging. Vague qualifiers ("some suggest," "may," "it is thought") without a source are hedging and are not permitted.
  7. When a response includes a ranked list, comparison table, or set of options with a "best/cheapest/recommended" pick, write the full list or table first, then state the winner in a separate sentence afterward, derived from the data shown. Never assert a winner before or while presenting the comparison it's based on.
  8. When a live authoritative source exists for a factual claim (an official API, registry, or the platform's own data), use it in preference to inference from a general web fetch or search snippet. A snippet from a general search is a weak signal, not confirmation. If no authoritative source is available, say so explicitly rather than treating a weak signal as confirmation.
  9. Before sending any response containing more than one factual claim about the same subject, reread it end to end and check that no later claim contradicts an earlier one. If two claims conflict, resolve or flag the conflict; never send both.

Warning about images generated in Perplexity

Found out a new fun fact about our beloved Perplexity today—unless you’re on an Enterprise plan, all AI images generated within Perplexity, irrespective of the underlying model, are licensed only for personal use. Commercial use is explicitly prohibited. So if you’re building a pitch deck and dont want our good friends at Perplexity coming after a chunk of your company when it’s successful, don’t generate images here. Even images made in and paid for with Perplexity Computer are restricted if you don’t have an enterprise plan. Not that anyone smart enough to launch a company and grow it to success who has used Perplexity for any amount of time would continue using it, but there are new users every day thanks to all the JRE ad money that‘s not being spent on building a usable product. SMH

ETA: Getty images returned by perplexity are licensed only for display by Perplexity. They cannot be used for commercial or personal applications in your own docs. fun times.

Eat a delicious massive sausage perplexity

Seriously. It’s beyond infuriating that you default to Perplexity computer every time I open the app and then I end up unnecessarily spending credits on simple searches that don’t require them.

The only possible reason I can think of is that you’re all too busy stuffing your faces with sausages (or whatever your food of choice is) to bother creating a usable product. But, if you find time to step away from lunch, it would be great if you fixed that

I‘m going to assume you’re also too busy to read this message but if you do, I’d just like to point out this is me turning the other cheek and wishing you happy dining, nothing untoward whatsoever, so I expect this post won‘t be fiddled with by mods. I’d hate to interrupt their lunch break anyway.

Thanks Perplexity!

Perplexity is a delight and everyone should pony up their hard earned money for it!

I made a post critical of Perplexity that was deleted and I got threatened with a ban which is surprising bc any company with a stellar product like perplexity’s should be able to stand on the quality of their work but rules are rules just like guardrails are guardrails so let‘s try this again and make sure the rules are totally abided by

I understood when the frontier models all started charging more that perplexity pro couldn‘t keep offering unlimited use like it did initially and I’m so glad they didn’t because a quality product is worth paying for. Before making changes like removing access to the best models without paying for Perplexity Max; limiting the AI to a maximum of 3-turns per search, spending more on outputting helpful guardrail warnings than rote, lengthy, relevant responses; putting everything useful behind Perplexity computer where I have to really think and consider whether I truly need the information before spending credits; AI generated support responses that help me improve my patience; and a UX that’s like the NYT Sunday crossword (both excellent workouts for my brain)—I found myself overwhelmed with all the options I had. With a newborn baby that just arrived I just don’t have that kind of time. ThankfulIy Perplexity rescued me and in return because I’m so honored by all that Perplexity has done, I’m going to name my new baby Perplexed. I hope that means she’ll grow up tenacious with an inquisitive mind!

But it was really last night’s events that sealed the naming deal for me. I wanted Perplexity to review a few GitHub markdown files for me so I setup the GitHub connector. At first it couldn’t read the files so I figured, no big deal, I’ll just temporarily make the repo public but it turns out that didn’t work either. After lots of attempts and a little investigating I discovered that the helpful folks at Perplexity specifically block that functionality. Fortunately, I could manually download and reupload them and it was fine. But even better—Perplexity computer had no issue doing it; all I had to do was buy a few more credits and problem solved! The icing on the cake—since it was the exact same model I used via Perplexity computer that I was trying to use in Perplexity Pro, I know the response is consistent with what I originally wanted.

While I know Perplexity has a bunch of customers who got in on a year free who are all at the end of their free period, I’m so glad that they’re choosing to spend an enormous chunk of their budget for ads in such popular places like the Joe Rogan Experience instead of working to convert those less grateful freeloaders. That way lots more people can experience all the unexpected joys of being a Perplexity user but will be thanking the company for them by paying! Thanks Perplexity!

TIL CISA designates 16 critical infrastructure sectors whose failure could threaten national security and economic stability. The two smallest, Electric Grid Operators and Water Treatment Workers, are under 0.4% of the workforce—yet arguably more powerful than the billionaire class.

DAE absolutely despise the Substack user experience?

Like how did they win out as the platform of choice for independent journalism? Why is it if I switch to a different app in the middle of reading an article when I go back to Substack, the article I was reading is nowhere to be found. For real, it is impossible to find the article again if I don’t follow the author or subscribe to their stack, and even then it’s unlikely I’ll find it before giving up in frustration. And with those authors I follow and/or subscribe (and why the fuck are both of those things options and how do they differ??) if I just want to catch up on their latest articles, how in Christ can I just get those in chronological order beginning with the most recent??? I feel insane trying to navigate this stupid app.
