What do you think of Anarchists?

I'm guessing Ayn Rand fans are fairly rabid against the Left, but how about the Anarchist part of it? Anti-state, anti-capitalism, pro individual liberty but with considerations for community. Is there a clear political reaction to them?

Funded vs Self Funded

Do people view them differently? I've heard it suggested but has certainly not been reflected in my (funded) PhD experience. Does it make more of a difference in the job market or something?

Pros - Even if you like the technology does the way it has and will be mobilised not worry you?

While I have disagreements with it I can understand the excitement at the potential of new AI use cases but much like any set of technologies those under the (vague) AI banner can't be separated from their political, social and cultural contexts. So wondered how those on the pro side felt about that? Altman, Musk, Thiel - Anthropic, OpenAI - various governments pushing AI use - militarisation, automated decision making, surveillance - smaller companies involved in deepfakes, nudification, job losses etc - are there any aspects in which you become anti even as you like the potentials of the technologies?

Far Right March on Saturday near King's

Given the amount of student accommodation nearby and the campuses there King's should really inform students about this stuff, but they don't. So - the blue route is where a far right march will be taking place. Be aware if for any reason you have to be in central on Saturday.

I have a couple of papers almost finished, pending supervisor feedback and I know where I'm submitting them but given the peer review structure there's a good chance at least one of them won't be published until next year (being blindly optimistic and assuming it'll be accepted at all). Was wondering if, after supervisor approval, it'd be worth putting them up as pre-prints? Does that just look crappy for a PhD or is it ok? One I kind of want to be able to refer back to myself, the other isn't exactly time sensitive but if it's lost in the system for 6+ months it might not be as relevant.

So, any thoughts?

At about the midway point of my PhD (humanities) and one thing that routinely seems to occur to me is just how *ignorant* I feel. My work is in a fairly novel area so abstractly I know I should feel at least vaguely up on things given the work I've done - work no one else really focuses on - but generally I can't imagine presenting myself as an authority on anything. And that's even as I attend conferences, talk about my work (to generally warm receptions), guest lecture, write papers etc.

So, is there a point at which you genuinely do feel like you're in a position to talk with confidence? Or is imposter syndrome a perpetual thing?
