Unhealthy coping mechanisms are often ways to compensate for an environment that made safe, healthy connection impossible.
People don’t eat and eat because they hungry, but because food could be their only source of comfort.
People don’t spend hours and hours playing video games or watching tv shows because they are too lazy to do anything else, it could be that entertainment is the closest they can get to witnessing some sort of human experience.
When we learn that the things we do, those we would rather not do in excess aren’t driven by laziness or poor character or you name it, the burden becomes a little lighter. At the very least, now shame is not added to the burden and we are a little bit closer to the root of the problem.
