[Fic Rec] S+ , a Drarry soulmate AU (top Draco)

I need more people to read S+ by TobiasAfterDark444 because this fic has made me laugh out loud often enough that my family has genuinely asked, “What the hell are you reading?”

The premise: Harry has one inappropriate thought about Draco and wakes up with Draco’s soulmark on his inner thigh. Draco knows he has a soulmate. Draco has absolutely no idea it’s Harry.

Cue mutual pining, enemies-to-lovers, jealous/oblivious Draco, Quidditch-player Harry, excellent banter, and two very intelligent men sharing approximately one brain cell when it comes to each other.

Minor spoiler for the scene I drew:

>!At a gala, Draco suddenly realises Harry has become offensively hot: tattoos, earring, legs, the whole situation... and cannot stop staring.!<

>!So naturally he turns to Ron, Harry’s best friend, and asks:!<

>!“So, how does one get into his trunks?”!<

>!Ron: “One doesn’t ask his best mate… for a start.”!<

>!Meanwhile Harry is RIGHT THERE and Draco is still searching for his mysterious soulmate. 😂!<

Anyway, read S+. Draco Malfoy’s powers of deduction deserve an audience.

PS. No, I'm not accepting commissions right now, but if you rec me awesome fics the pencil spirit may possess me.

UPDATE: You enabled me. I drew Salt. 😂❤️ Obviously, I’m recommending it too.

Well. A couple of days ago I asked you all which scenes from Salt I should draw. The answer was: yes.

I couldn’t help myself and had to finish this one, so this is what I did instead of sleeping. 😂

This is my illustration for Salt by Fluffy_Underneath, which has very firmly become one of my favourite Drarry fics of the year.

I loved>! the Scottish setting and all the Outer Hebrides inspiration, Harry and Draco as fully grown, complicated adults who are still so completely Harry and Draco, hermit-ish islander Harry + city-boy journalist Draco, the banter, the tenderness, the pining...!< basically, I was doomed.

I knew >!the hand sign!< had to make it into the illustration. One of my absolute favourite moments is when >!Draco finally realises what that symbol is, and I really wanted it there as one of those details!< that means nothing if you haven't read the fic... and EVERYTHING if you have.

Harry’s tattoos obviously had to be included too, so I went completely insane drawing them.

And >!the little house in the background!< is a wink to the cover Fluffy chose for the fic.

Mostly, though, I just really loved drawing these two extremely handsome thirty-something idiots in love. ❤️

Also: you people gave me WAY too many good scene suggestions on the last post, so I’m afraid this may not be the last Salt drawing.>! The press conference! The puffins! Slaps on the boat! Draco in red lingerie! THAT BED SCENE WITH THE SIGN!!< You have created a problem.

If you haven’t read Salt yet:

You’ll thank me later. ❤️

Favourite fics I’ve read this year + please help me decide what to draw 💡

I’ve been thinking about the fics I’ve loved most this year, and naturally my brain has gone: okay, but which scenes do I need to draw? So here are three favourites, plus a request for ideas from anyone who has read them:

"The Most Splendid Thing" (https://archiveofourown.org/works/61054984/)

Okay, this one isn’t actually from this year, but I did read it this year and very quickly became obsessed. I’ve already drawn a scene from almost every chapter, and I have another one in mind for chapter 4, so at this point this is less me asking for ideas and more me taking another opportunity to recommend it. 😂

"S+" (https://archiveofourown.org/works/87255596/)

One of my favourites from this year because I’m an absolute sucker for humour and soulmarks, and this one hit every single button for me.

I’m currently thinking about drawing Harry and his tattoos, BUT if you’ve read it: what other scene would you love to see drawn? There are way too many ridiculous possibilities.

"Salt" (https://archiveofourown.org/works/87885201)

This was such a lovely read. Harry and Draco in Scotland, Draco as a journalist… I loved the whole atmosphere of it.

The problem is that I really want to draw something from it, but I cannot for the life of me decide which scene. So if you’ve read it, please tell me: which moment would you most like to see illustrated?

Basically, enable me. I need drawing ideas. And if you haven't read these fics, they are all fantastic 😍

PS. The drawing in this post is from TMST

I miss when AO3 bookmarks were for recommendations, not policing authors

I’m posting this because I’ve noticed a horrible trend in the bookmark sections of Harry Potter fics, and others. It’s as though some readers have appointed themselves the fanfiction police.

I have two examples here.

The first is readers adding extra warning tags for other readers. I can understand it a little more when a fic appears to be incorrectly rated, such as being rated Teen instead of Explicit. In that case, go ahead and report it. But I really don’t understand it when an author has chosen “Creator Chose Not to Use Archive Warnings.” As a reader, I already know that means the fic may not be a safe bet. Can we please leave authors alone in those cases?

The second is readers unilaterally deciding that a fic was written by AI. Sometimes they even copy and paste the paragraph that supposedly proves their accusation 🤦🏼‍♀️. And no, I’m not talking about fics using the well-known Claude skin. I’m talking about ordinary fics. Who are you to accuse authors like that?

Bookmarks used to be a place I loved exploring as a reader in the Drarry fandom. If someone who enjoyed a fic I liked had bookmarked it, I could look through their other bookmarks and often find similar stories. Now I find myself avoiding bookmark sections more and more.

Has this happened to you too?

What are the most famous fests for the different pairings and how does a fest really work?

Hello! This year I noticed there are a lot of fests going on. I even noticed for the first time that one of my favorite fics of the last years, The Most Splendid Thing [https://archiveofourown.org/works/61054984/\] was written for a fest. I've tried to investigate further but I don't really understand how these festivals work. So, some questions:

-what is the purpose of a fest?

-what are your favourite fest fics?

-why some fests say that art must be betad? I mean, how do you even beta a drawing?

-Can you recommend your favorite Harry Potter M/M fests?

How being accused of "the tech that must not be named" actually made me a better writer

A year ago I started posting my first long story on AO3. By then I'd already been writing it for almost two years, and I was so excited that I uploaded two or three chapters a week without ever looking back. Once a chapter was posted, it was gone from my mind.

Around chapter twenty-something, people started accusing me of using "the tech". Honestly, I barely cared. I knew I'd written every word myself, and I'm old enough that random strangers on the internet don't bother me as much as my bills do.

Life got in the way around chapter fifty. The story had reached some very dark emotional places, and I was in the hospital at the time. I simply couldn't keep writing it. Instead, I wrote something completely different: a ridiculous, filthy comedy.

To my surprise, that fic took off. It became fairly popular in the fandom, and nobody accused me of "the tech" ever! That annoyed me far more than the original accusations bacause I had been fully prepared for another round of comments, and when they never came, I found myself wondering if the readers had actually been reacting to something real. Maybe the issue wasn't "the tech era" and distrust at all. Maybe it was my writing! 🤔

So I went back to those first chapters. I nearly died laughing.

I'm an engineer, and those chapters read exactly like the technical manuals I work with every day: tiny sentences and extremely controlled grammar. Every paragraph was trying so hard to avoid mistakes that... it forgot to sound like a human being. I had accidentally written documentation instead of fiction!! 🤣

Were those chapters generated by a bot? Of course not. Were they good? Also... no.

Looking back, I could see what features of the writing these readers had reacted to. Their conclusion was wrong, but the stiffness they had noticed? Yeah, that was real. So I started rewriting the early chapters using the voice I'd developed over three years of writing that same story.

That experience taught me something I think we forget whenever these discussions come up: human writing evolves. If you spend years on a project, your chapter one and your chapter eighty probably won't sound identical. Growth is part of the process.

So. In the end, those accusations probably made me a better writer, even if they arrived in the least constructive way imaginable.

I also know I had an advantage. I wasn't insecure enough to believe them. A younger writer, or someone just starting out, might have had a very different experience.

So, if you come across writing that feels awkward or artificial, consider that you may simply have encountered inexperienced writing.

If you genuinely want to help the community, offering thoughtful feedback will always do more than jumping straight to "this is written by tech".

Anyway, I just thought it was a funny story worth sharing.

I don't think I've laughed this hard at a Drarry fic in ages: S+

I found it some days ago (thanks reddit for the rec).

Came for the ridiculous premise. Stayed because... honestly, Draco Malfoy is the dumbest man alive here.

Harry gets Draco's soulmark. Draco doesn't get Harry's. Draco knows someone out there has his soulmark and spends months searching for his soulmate while repeatedly looking straight past Harry (ouch?). Harry responds in the most Harry way possible: he decides Draco doesn't want him and covers the soulmark up.

It's funny as hell, surprisingly sweet, very, very horny, and somehow makes all of those things work at once!!

Highly recommended if you want a romantic comedy full of pining, very oblivious idiots and a bit soulmate nonsense.

Seeking: Explicit, Funny, Well-Written Drarry/Snarry

So a couple of days ago I read this fic basically right after it was published and thought: wow, okay, this is filthy, weirdly funny, and somehow still emotionally convincing...

I already trusted the author because I follow their longfic, but now I’m stuck craving more stuff with the same vibe.

Can anyone rec me fics that have:

-shameless explicit smut

-actually in-character dynamics

-some humour / banter

-genuinely good writing

-anonymous sex / hidden identity / “who is this person” vibes (optional but I loved this about this fic)

-preferably Drarry or Snarry

But NOT:

-minors

-gender-swaps

For reference, the fic was called "The Veiled Gate"

I’m trying to find a fic I read on AO3 and, like an idiot, I told myself I’d bookmark it later 🤦🏽‍♂️

Obviously I did not.

...

What I remember is mostly vibes, but very specific vibes:

-Harry goes back in time, but not in a cute fix-it way

he’s mentally much older.

-Other people came back too: Neville, Luna, and maybe one of the twins?

-Harry had some kind of secret identity thing going on

-it was Snarry and Ron/Draco

-dark tone, war trauma, very competent Harry energy

-also very smutty. Last scene I remember reading involved Snape and Harry at the teacher table and I had to briefly stop and stare into space

...I’m pretty sure it was a WIP but don't know for sure, it was long like +100K for sure because that's one of my filters always.

Does this sound familiar to anyone, or did I hallucinate the whole thing at 2 a.m.?

Please help!
