Just a little note of progress

Hi there!

I’m new here, and to writing in general. I got an idea for a novel something like last April or May, and got right to work and found that I love crafting stories and little worlds.

I just wanted to show how much progress I’ve been able to make in only a year; the full novel drafts this far have averaged out to around 70k words each time, and I’m on my fifth draft here. I’ve been really practicing sentence structure and how to present info lately; I’m imagining how I can guide a reader’s perception through the same info in different ways. I posted two pictures here: the first is my first attempt at introducing a character toward the beginning of my novel; it’s one of the first things I ever wrote. The second is that same scene in its fifth draft; I’ve edited to vary sentence length and structure a lot, and I’ve paid specific attention to the order I present info. Physicality, opening up into a grander setting, and then psychological in the first paragraph.

I find it very interesting to see how it all really works and how actual authors tailor their language to not just portray info but guide perception. I wonder where I might be in another year, or a decade, or more.

Thanks!

Variety in writing styles?

Hi there!

I’m pretty new to writing, a little over a year, and I was wondering for you guys personally how many projects you work on at one time. I’ve found that I tend to stay most productive when I’m working on several things at once, for instance I started last year with a western novel I’ve been learning and redrafting and refining and all that, but along the way I’ve made little forays into a sci-fi short story, a psychological horror short story, a character drama, and recently been working on a longer-form sci-fi book and delving into poetry.

For reference, I do tend to do this with everything. I’m a musician too, and I often work best bouncing between metal (my home base) and rock (similar) and then just various other things; folk, gypsy jazz, classical, progressive stuff, funk, Latin, whatever. And when I consume media I do the same thing, I’ll read like 9 different novels and stories alongside each other or watch 3 or 4 TV series and so on. I just find that when I’m not in the mood for a particular style, forcing myself to work on it produces only slop, while not working on it at all kinda kills my motivation and creativity, so pivoting into other related projects helps me keep going and practicing while still staying alert and fresh. Surprisingly I don’t have a hard time maintaining focus in general lmao

Anyone else do this or am I an oddity?
