Title
Survey : Student Opinions on Caste Reservation in Manipal
A new private member's bill has been introduced in the Lok Sabha regarding introducing caste reservations in private educational institutes like Manipal, BITS Pilani, Ashoka University etc and as a researcher in social sciences from TISS I’m conducting a survey, curious about how alumni and current students here would actually feel about it.
On one hand, it could lead to a more diverse student body and potentially give students from historically underrepresented or disadvantaged backgrounds greater access to the college. You could argue that having people from different socioeconomic and social backgrounds would make the campus experience richer for everyone.
On the other hand, some people might see reservation as unfair, particularly if they feel admissions should be based primarily on academic performance or that it could affect opportunities for students who don't qualify under the policy.
What I’m especially curious about is how both current students and alumni would experience and respond to such a change in practice.
- For current students, do you think the introduction of reservation would have any impact on how students interact with or perceive classmates admitted through the policy?
- Do you think students admitted through reservation would feel equally welcomed and included within the college community?
- Could there be misconceptions or assumptions about a student’s academic abilities based solely on their admission category, and if so, how could the college community address that?
- For students admitted through reservation, do you think the policy would make them feel that they have greater access and opportunity, or could it also create concerns about how they might be perceived by their peers?
- For alumni, would the introduction of reservation change your perception of the college, its student community, or the value of your degree?
- Do you think having students from a wider range of social and socioeconomic backgrounds would enrich the overall college experience?
- How do you think existing students and alumni would ideally want to see interactions between students from different backgrounds develop?
- Ultimately, do you think the policy could contribute to a more diverse and inclusive community while maintaining a strong sense of belonging and mutual respect among all students?
Genuinely interested in hearing how people who have actually attended the college would think about this, how your attitude would change depending on how the policy was implemented.
