BB QNX Securing Physical AI

People underestimate Blackberry's QNX operating system as a secure RTOS (Real-Time Operating System) based on a deterministic microkernel architecture.

The stock's potential is beginning to be realized. There was a slow wind-up with the drop in car sales. But now we are here, and QNX adoption has not stopped it has expanded into new markets.

This includes physical AI and AI at the edge. Certain robotic functions, currently operating in largely unregulated environments, are increasingly subject to new safety standards. Regulations are trending toward requiring a deterministic OS similar to ISO's mandated in automotive or safety-critical applications, this creates a strong tailwind for solutions like QNX.

QNX is one of the most adopted embedded OS in the world. It's installed in defense systems, power plants, municipal grids, robotics, rockets, rail, defense, medical and now 275 million vehicles and counting. It is now being almost packaged and resold through suppliers like Nvidia Halos, Apple Carplay Ultra, and Vectors Alloy Core. Beyond this QNX also has broader silicon partnerships with AMD, NXP, Qualcomm, Texas Instruments, Intel, and others for real-time control, perception, and mixed-criticality robotics across industrial automation, drones, and more.🚀

QNX version 8.0 is years ahead. BlackBerry has partnered with universities to train developers on the platform and recently secured developers through partnerships with Pi Square, ISC2, and CompTIA. The next competitor is still years away from anything even remotely close in terms of market penetration. QNX Hypervisor 2.0 is 61508 SIL 3 certified and has been recognized as ISO 26262 ASIL D compliant, making it the world's first ASIL D safety-certified commercial hypervisor.

A true microkernel architecture like QNX has full memory protection built-in, meaning that any component can fail and be restarted without corrupting the microkernel or other components in the system. If failure does occur, QNX has the ability to rectify the problem without affecting any other part of the system through process monitoring and recovery components. 🍇

The QNX Hypervisor utilizes patented and patent-pending technologies that simplify how elements are shared on the system. Multiple operating systems can use one display controller to render content onto multiple displays, aka digital instrument clusters and infotainment. This means that Android Automotive or any other competing operating system can run in unison with QNX while it is handling critical systems. Vector, NVDIA Halos, Apple are already taking advantage of this to secure their systems. 🚀

The need for a software system as reliable and secure as QNX is an indicator of potential, considering reasonable foresight into the future. Imagine a smart city where traffic lights detect vehicles and manage traffic as a group these require deterministic behavior. The thought of automation entering every industry and cars communicating with your home and other cars, it will require the same. Beyond this we now have AI at the edge where ISO and consumer product regulations will push robotics manufacturers towards determinism as well. You can't risk having a humanoid robot injure someone in an unregulated environment. Having an error free RTOS controlling critical functions lile balance will he highly sought after. 🍇

BlackBerry has been filing patents on these concepts and ideas for over a decade. Like U.S. Patent No. 12,639,205 B2 "Buffers in Shared Memory for Sensor Data"🚀

TL;DR

QNX, being a highly adopted embedded OS, will become the industry standard embedded OS for safety-critical devices and infrastructure particulary physical AI and AI at the edge. With a little foresight, you can imagine it becoming the standard of embedded systems and a standard for safety-critical applications. The OS is capable as a non-embedded OS or general-purpose OS (GPOS) on top of it's core purpose as a EOS, giving it the opportunity to scale with oncoming developer knowledge and talent. NVIDIA, Apple, and Vector have already become resellers of the QNX OS through Halos, Carplay Ultra, and Alloy Core as they build platforms around it allowing Blackberry to dip its toes in everything physical AI and safety critical. Agility robotics has announced utilizing NVIDIA Halos for Digit V5.0 to enable safety critical operation. 🚀🚀🚀

MDA Space rotational catalyst

This dip makes no sense to me. Nothing changed in guidance, backlog still $3.7B, revenue still growing 30%.

Feels like sector rotation into SpaceX and MDA just gets ignored because it’s “boring profitable space”.

Anyone else buying this dip or am I early/dumb?
