how to be less awkward

How do I get better at having conversations at parties? 20F and I feel like I completely freeze

Hi everyone! I’m gonna go straight to the point here how do I get better at having conversations and making friends at parties/dinners?

I’m 20F and I consider myself social in most situations. I work in retail, I’m not really afraid to ask people things in public, and generally I have no problem interacting with strangers. But whenever I’m at a party or dinner where I don’t know everyone, I freeze.

I grew up in two very different countries. The culture where I grew up is very warm and social, and I moved to Australia about 7 years ago. I’ve made Aussie friends through school and work and I have an Aussie boyfriend, so it’s not like I don’t know how to connect with people here. But for some reason, making new friends at social events is something I really struggle with.

At parties I become so aware of myself. I’ll end up standing around observing everyone rather than actually joining conversations. I’m always worried that asking too many questions will make the other person feel like I’m interviewing them, so I’ll overthink what to say and then say nothing at all.

I went to a party last night and I’m honestly beating myself up a bit because I feel like I should’ve made more of an effort to talk to people. I did talk to some people, hung out with my friends and danced a lot, so it wasn’t like I had a terrible time. Physically/socially I probably didn’t even look awkward, but internally I felt SO awkward and like I couldn’t let my conversational side come out.

The worst part is that the morning after a party, I’ll replay everything and feel embarrassed about how “awkward” I was. Then I end up avoiding social interactions because I’m scared of feeling that way again, which obviously means I miss opportunities to meet people who could potentially become meaningful friends.

I actually have another party tonight and now I’m already nervous about doing the exact same thing 😭

For people who are naturally good at talking to strangers and making friends at parties: what do you actually do? How do you keep conversations flowing without making it feel like an interview? And how do you stop overthinking yourself while you’re talking to someone?

Any advice would genuinely be appreciated!
