Interesting thought I had about the existence of photography in the Shrek universe

You don't need to invoke magic to believe that a medieval society like Shrek's could have invented the polaroid style camera that Shrek and Donkey use in the first film. The camera obscura has been known since 400 BC; the problem was finding a way to preserve the image. In our timeline, it took until the 19^th century to do that, via chemicals that change when exposed to light. But it's entirely conceivable that a medieval society with an advanced knowledge of chemistry could have found the right combination of chemicals a lot earlier than we did.

And Shrek's civilization does have advanced knowledge of chemistry. We see a whole potion factory (chemical plant) in Shrek 2.

Script based on the major arcana of a tarot deck, version 2

I followed u/B3C4U5E_'s advice to create a script with 22 regular characters, even though some Travellers were better fits for the tarot cards.

The cards and their corresponding characters are

  • Fool: Fool
  • Magician: Magician
  • High Priestess: High Priestess
  • Empress: Princess
  • Emperor: King
  • Hierophant: Monk (could be replaced with Preacher)
  • Lovers: Sweetheart
  • Chariot: Knight (because Knights drive chariots I guess)
  • Justice: Devil's Advocate
  • Hermit: Hermit
  • Wheel of Fortune: Gambler (spins the wheel every night, could also be Fortune Teller for name equivalence)
  • Strength: Psychopath (because an ax-murderer must be strong, I guess? Couldn't think of a better character)
  • Hanged Man: Mutant (might be executed [hanged] by their own ability)
  • Death: Undertaker
  • Temperance: Courtier
  • Devil: Imp
  • Tower: Mayor (the building in its icon is the closest I can get to a tower)
  • Star: Wizard (icon depicts a star)
  • Moon: Moonchild
  • Sun: Sage (fire from a candle is the closest I could get to the Sun's heat)
  • Judgement: Vizier (forces executions like a judge)
  • World: Atheist (icon depicts a planet, plus atheists are worldly)

Traveller idea: the Exmachina

"The first time your team would lose, they don't, and no one can die until dawn."

The Exmachina saves the day... once.

  • If the Exmachina is evil and the Demon is executed, the Exmachina's ability activates and the Demon does not die.
  • If the Exmachina is good and a player would die such that there are only two players left alive, the Exmachina's ability activates and that player doesn't die.
  • If an ability would cause the Exmachina's team to lose the game, or the opposing team to win the game, nothing happens and the game continues.
  • The Exmachina's ability doesn't just prevent the death of the player that would have ended the game. Once it has fired, no one dies for the rest of the day or night. (This part of the ability prevents the Demon simply killing someone to win, in the situation where only 3 players live.)

Examples:

  • The evil Exmachina and a Demon are in play. The Demon is executed, but does not die, and the game continues.
  • The Vortox and a good Exmachina are in play. No one is executed. The game continues. That night, the Vortox attacks someone, but they do not die.
  • The Mayor, an evil Exmachina and the Demon are the only players alive. No one is executed. Nothing happens, and the night phase begins. The Demon attacks someone that night, but they do not die.

I don't like the wording of the abilities of the Dreamer and Puzzlemaster and I think they could be improved

My suggestions for the Dreamer:

  • "Each night, choose a player: you learn their character and [an opposing character / a character of the [other / opposite] alignment] (you don't know which)." This makes clear that the Dreamer's ability will give you the player's character.
  • "Each night, choose a player: you learn 1 good and 1 evil character, 1 of which is [theirs / their character]." A small change with the same effect.

My suggestion for the Puzzlemaster:

  • "1 player is drunk, even if you die. Once per game, guess who it is and learn a player: if you guessed correctly, this player is the demon."

Has anyone ever witnessed an evil Klutz choose an evil player and win for good?

I don't think this could happen with competent players of Sects & Violets, because I can't think of any series of competent decisions that could create an evil Klutz who doesn't know the evil team. But has anyone seen it happen in a custom script?

Edit: I thought of a circumstance where this could happen in S&V with good decisions!

  1. There are two Demons in play because the Pit-Hag created a Demon on a previous night
  2. One Demon gets Snake Charmed
  3. The Pit-Hag turns the former-Snake-Charmer-turned-Demon into a Klutz
  4. The other Demon kills the Klutz

(Loved Trope) Character is framed as important at the beginning but dies quickly

  • Hero from Feast (2005): introduced as a savior with the experience and authority to lead the survivors against the invading creatures, the moment he says "I'm the guy that's gonna save your ass", he is dragged out the window and killed.
  • Luke "Golden Boy" Riordan from Gen V: despite looking like a textbook handsome fraternity kid, with a lot of influence at Godolkin University, he blows himself up with his powers over past traumas at the end of the first episode. (The actor expressed interest in returning for season 2,
  • Eddard Stark from A Song of Ice and Fire and its adaptation Game of Thrones is arguable, if you can call the end of an entire novel or season of television "early". It is at least early relative to the rest of the material.

Would it be possible to design a Demon that can kill the Storyteller and take over Storytelling?

The name would be something like the Archfiend or Metakiller. It sounds like a fun idea, but there are obvious flaws: why would the Demon choose not to do so? How does the good team win after the Demon has taken over? I couldn't design a character to satisfy these questions, so I thought I'd pick the community's hive brain.

What happens if a Mastermind dies without execution on their day? And possibly a Legion interaction

What happens if a Mastermind dies by means other than execution, or becomes droisoned, after the final day has begun (e.g. being nominated by the Golem, or a Witch-cursed Sweetheart nominating and the Storyteller making the Mastermind drunk)? Does the game immediately end in a Good victory because the Mastermind was the only thing keeping it going? Or has the ability already fired such that the Mastermind's life no longer matters?

If the answer is the latter: suppose this happens the day after the last Legion player is executed. With no living players having the ability "Executions fail if only evil voted", would Evil then have a voting majority?

Joke Outsider idea: the TB

"All players to whom characters from the Trouble Brewing script speak become poisoned. Poisoned players might die at any time."

The joke is that TB is also used as an abbreviation for tuberculosis.

Does the Witch lose their ability if there is never a point where exactly 3 players are alive?

There are 5 players alive: the Witch, a Grandmother, their grandchild, another player, and a once-killed Zombuul so that 4 players appear alive. The grandchild is executed, causing them and the Grandmother to die. The registering number of players goes directly from 4 to 2.

Does the Witch lose their ability? The wording is very specific that it applies to 3 players living.

Are there any characters pronounced "fang gu" or similar that could refer to a monster, demon, ghost, or spirit of some kind?

The Fang Gu is a Demon character from the game Blood on the Clocktower that kills one person per night, but the first time it kills a type of character called an "Outsider", the Outsider becomes a Fang Gu and the original Fang Gu dies.

The designers admitted it's gibberish made to sound Chinese. But what are the closest Chinese characters pronounced "fang gu" that could evoke any kind of ghost or evil creature of myth?

Townsfolk idea: the Goat Herder

"Each night, choose 1 of 3 provided players: you learn that one of the others is not the Demon."

Maybe a bit too similar to the Fortune Teller? But I thought it would be fun to make a character based on the Monty Hall problem.

Minion or Demon idea: Devil You Know // Devil You Don't

Devil You Know:

"All players know who you are. Each night, [insert annoying ability here]. If you die during the day, another evil player might become the Devil You Don't."

Devil You Don't:

"Each night, [insert very powerful ability here]."

What would be some appropriate and thematic abilities for this character duo?
