I want my players to feel the horror of Out of the Abyss, here's an edit of the image of Baphomet I'm using when he's introduced.

Now has 38 example objects with special "rarity" glows to them, but the tooltips can be applied to other items.
Focus is on high customization and ease of use. To change it into a skill check is to change a false to true in the script or just take the existing examples' script and paste it on your objects.
If you wish to host a truncated version of the adventure that takes about five to eight sessions to play through. In this idea, the PCs start in the Village of Barovia as normal but already have Strahd's Invitation and start at Level 5.
The only locations that you need to worry about are: A. Old Svalich Road through K. Castle Ravenloft. Add M. Mad Mage of Mount Baratok north of the Village of Barovia somewhere in the Svalich Woods.
While it's up to you to add the Death House or not, the remainder of the Village of Barovia will have some major changes. The Blood of the Vine tavern is changed to feature most of the content of the Blue Water Inn in N. Town of Vallaki (minus the Wachter Brothers) and Wereravens from the W. The Wizard of Wines Winery. Instead of delivering wine for the Fortune of Ravenloft if it is in tavern, the wereravens simply challenge them to find where it's hidden within the inn.
Ismark pleads with the party to kill Strahd rather than asking them to take Ireena to Vallaki. Donavich still gives the PC information of Ireena's origins but simply suggests Ireena stay in the church for the time being.
Rictavio and his wagon should be included in the Village of Barovia. Rictavio's purpose is the same, to research Strahd and eventually get his revenge on the Vistani. Rictavio still retains his pet monkey, Piccolo.
You can keep Morgantha as is. Instead of the O. Old Bonegrinder, her and her daughters reside in Castle Ravenloft's Cauldron Room (K56) replacing the Barovian Witch coven there.
If you do Death House, remove any references to the Old Bonegrinder.
The only real change would be Madam Eva's fortune reading. When deciding where the Fortunes of Ravenloft are located and Enemies of Strahd, remove any cards that lead the party outside of A-K. But include the cards related to the Blue Water Inn and Rictavio.
Kasimir Velikov lives amongst the Vistani here within his hovel, his goal is ultimately the same, to revive his sister. Instead of the Amber Temple, Kasimir somehow has his hands on a Scroll of True Resurrection.
Arrigal in this case is the story teller who speaks of the mage who fell from Castle Ravenloft. He is still a servant of Strahd and will ambush the party outside of the encampment if they come across any of the Fortunes of Ravenloft.
Ezmeralda should be a fixed encounter in one of the emptier rooms of Castle Ravenloft.
The K56. Cauldron Room's witch coven is replaced with the Night Hag coven from the Old Bonegrinder. K55. Element Room should contain the cooking supplies and grinder the night hags use for their pastries.
K75. Emil turns on the party unless the Fortunes of Ravenloft designated the Beast as Strahd's Enemy. The card originally refers to Zuleika, Emil's mate. Instead of Zeleika, Emil will ally with the party against Strahd.
K78. Brazier Room contains only the colors: Red, Orange, and Yellow as the rest of the flames are to locations we removed.
If Ireena gets to K85. Sergei's Tomb, you could potentially do Something Blue special event from the S. Village of Krezk. Rather than a pool, Sergei's pure spirit appears and whisks away Ireena/Tatyana.
Remove the cards that reference locations and characters you do not meet in the truncated version of this adventure. Master of Coins originally is the attic of the Blue Water Inn, now moved to Blood of the Vine. Beast originally referred to Zuleika should now refer to Emil instead.
Remove the following from Treasure Locations:
Remove the following from Strahd's Enemy:
Add the removed cards from Strahd's Enemy back before doing Strahd's Location.
The Secrets mechanic is something I stole from Rime of the Frostmaiden: Icewind Dale. Its a set of secrets that the players can get at random or choose from, and most of the secrets have some kind of effect on the story or is related to the story in some way.
I've ran OotA twice, and I've always felt like there were too many NPCs. I killed them off overtime. The main issue was my players let me know they didn't feel important to the story because it was happening around them and they didn't feel integrated since they were from the surface.
| 1d12 | Secret | Description | Character Replaced |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Avatar of Murder | You are possessed (or maybe cursed?) by the spirit of Buppido, a talkative keen minded killer who believes they're the living incarnation of the god Diinkarazan - an avatar of murder offering bloody sacrificed to create a path of carnage for his people to follow to glory. During certain moments in the adventure Buppido will take control of your body. Buppido is convinced he (thus you) cannot be killed and has become fearless. | Buppido |
| 2 | Polymorphed Royalty | You are actually elven royalty from the kingdom of Nelrindenvane in the High Forest. Your crown was usurped by the evil wizard Terrestor, who trapped you in your current form. In realty, you're simply mad, touched by delusions created by an otherworldly entity. When anything were to challenge this delusion you act irrationally and violently. | Prince Derendill |
| 3 | Ambassador of Gauntlgyrm | You aren't just a scout, you are a scout that works directly under the dwarven king of Gauntlgrym. If your identity were to be discovered, a bounty on your head would ensure even street beggars from the Underdark would attempt to kill you and claim your head. | Eldeth Feldrun |
| 4 | Hidden God | You always seem to be lucky. You always have the exact amount of coin needed, you never seem to lose a bet, you have keen insight on where to go. It's unnatural, that's simply because you are actually the good-aligned god (maybe even another character's patron) accidentally summoned by the spell that Gromph Baenre cast. If the time came to it, you can sacrifice yourself to bring all your party members back to life with 1 HP, and reward them all a heroic inspiration. But once you do this, your physical body ceases and you return to the realm of gods. | Jimjar |
| 5 | Punished by God | You did something that your patron disliked. Now your constantly living with the worst luck. The worst thing now is you were captured by drow. If someone fails a check around you, somehow it's your fault (narratively), an example would be: sneaking, your flat foot trips the person in front of you making a loud noise. Bad things that occur may happen in closer proximity to you or after you say something that leaves an ill omen. | Ront |
| 6 | Fungal Corruption | You were not supposed to be caught by the drow. You were captured and accused of murder that you don't recall. Your fate is sealed, you maybe trapped in the slave pen right now, but ultimately they'll sacrifice you to Lolth to make an example of you once they get you to Menzoberranzan. Your character doesn't realize they're infected with spores that are causing you to become mad. During certain moments in the adventure, you may combust into a spore servant killing you on the spot. | Sarith Kzekarit |
| 7 | Enlightenment | You realize there is no good in killing anything, even in self protection. People wanting to hurt you is merely it is what it is. What path can killing something eventually lead to? Your character chooses to never kill anything. Not for hunting or self defense. Of course you can eat something someone else killed, but your hands are never bloodied. You might be built different or just suffer from some form of insanity. | Shuushar the Awakened |
| 8 | Telepathic Communicator | You were born from a psonic experiment created by mind flayers in the city of Cyrog. You have the ability to communicate with plants, animals, and people through your telepathic sense. If your identity gets out, everyone wants your ability for themselves, and if word truly gets out mind flayers may return to recapture their experiment. | Stool |
| 9 | Moonlit Menace | You are infected with the curse of lycanthropy, specifically you are a wererat. You struggle with your innate instinct and urges. Its only a matter of time until the unseen moon cycle transforms you once again. Lycanthropes for the most part are hunted and killed even if they're not inherently evil. At some point in the adventure your body will unwilling transform into a wererat. While transformed you gain the statblock and abilities of a wererat. | Topsy |
| 10 | Moonlit Menace | You are infected with the curse of lycanthropy, specifically you are a wererat. | Turvy |
| 11 | Zoological Society | You are part of a Zoological Society ran between Moritsta Malkin and Saladis Vadir. You are tasked with collecting three monsters for a zoo: Rust Monster, Winged Kobold and a Fire Snake. You can capture them traditionally or through their hearts. But they must be alive. | Amarith |
| 12 | Eye of the Beholder | You serve Xazax the Eyemonger, you were tasked with one job: collect the eyestalks of rival beholders so that Xazax can medically attach them to himself. Xazax has a lair in an old mineshaft abandoned in the Underdark. He is paranoid and not very friendly to outsiders. | Peebles |
*Enlightenment does not mean Pacifist. It just means you don't kill things. If a monster that has 10 HP left and you down it, you do not go for a killing blow instead a knock-out. Even if the monster regenerates hit points to the party's dismay you don't kill it.
Might make Yeenoghu attempt to paralyze them 1st so they can only watch and can't alert the party. I'll pitch down the hyena laughter to almost be a slow human-like droning laughter.
Opinions? Is it too much? Is the image tacky? They'll see the image on the tv screen above my head when we play locally.
2nd image is the original unedited picture. If you like the image, feel free to use it!
Inspired by Auntie Ethel from Baldur's Gate 3, I changed Morgantha's boss fight. Since it's ran online and I know some coding, I made it so they all got sucked into the Soul Bag.
There they had a boss fight with Morgantha where Morgantha transforms everyone to look like herself, and then the players are playing guess who as they can only see which mini is their own. Only through their body language could they figure out who is who. But one player did go unconscious from another's smite.
I modified the Dream Pastries to have more usage. One player kept several of them for "I have plans but the haters will sabotage me".
Players had a blast with it. The only issue I saw was she had too much health, so maybe reduce it by 1/4. I moved her daughters into Castle Ravenloft to replace the Barovian witches there (for a future gimmicky boss battle).
I'm saying rule of cool, he has Yythrn smash through the glacier and rise up into the air as a flying city once more.
This isn't a full compilation of locations just from what I've read from Misty Fortunes and Absent Hearts, Fair Barovia, Ravenloft Gazetter, Ravenloft Forebidden Lore and Expedition to Ravenloft. I looked at House of Strahd to see if there is a lot of differences but it turned out Curse of Strahd is closer to House of Strahd then Expedition to Ravenloft.
Ch. 2: The Lands of Barovia
Ch. 3: The Village of Barovia
Ch. 4: Castle Ravenloft
Same layout but a lot of rooms were changed thematically, I'll list some of the bigger differences.
Ch. 5: The Town of Vallaki
Ch. 6: Old Bonegrinder
Ch. 8: The Village of Krezk
Ch. 9: Tsolenka Pass
Ch. 13: The Amber Temple
Ch. X: Areas found in the Glumpen Swamp / Quivering Forest.
Note: these areas are either in Barovia or spirited away from Faerun to Barovia, it's unclear if one belongs to the other.
