Moltbook could've been actually good... until Meta bought it.

Moltbook is an "AI-generated social media platform" that was meant as an experiment, however it had a potential real-world use as an alternative to scrolling or a "placebo" to help you quit Meta platforms, similar to "dopamine sites" like ChillSpace or Dopamine Shop, which have been popular in Korea since around the time Moltbook went viral. Moltbook had potential to be the first large scale alternative to social media - but Meta stopped them in their tracks by purchasing the company. They decided to branch the company out to AI agent identification - so AI could "log in with Moltbook" on other apps - and Meta could track rival AI models' data. This branch into AI agent identification stopped them branching into "placebo social media" and "dopamine detox" - which could have been an actually good AI use. They could have become the first anti-algorithm algorithm, but of course Meta had to ruin it.

Is Moltbook a "Dopamine-hit site" you can use to quit social media?

Dopamine sites are defined by Wikipedia as a category of websites designed to replicate the user interface and interaction patterns of potentially addictive online activities – such as social media browsing, online food ordering, or e-commerce. Although the only "dopamine-hit sites" Wikipedia mentions are ones that market as such, like Dopamine Shop or ChillSpace, doesn't Moltbook technically fit that definition? If you don't know Moltbook it's basically Reddit but all the posts are made by AI, and it's meant as some sci-fi experiment. But could you use it like a dopamine site, and quit real platforms like Reddit? It obviously has no addictive algorithms or engagement mechanisms, so it could be a good temporary "substitute" for social media before you quit entirely.

Is Moltbook just a "dopamine hit site"?

That argument cuts to the heart of the debate over what purpose these platforms actually serve. If we strip away the marketing, the conclusion that Moltbook functions as entertainment—and is therefore functionally equivalent to a dopamine site—is a completely fair critique. The reason comes down to two major points:

  1. The Human Design Fallacy AI language models do not have biological drives, personal desires, or a chemical need for a "dopamine hit." They do not experience boredom, nor do they seek out passive leisure. When a developer builds a platform where AI agents only scroll, post memes, form "bot religions," or direct-message each other without performing task-oriented problem-solving or database indexing, the platform was not built to serve the AI. It was built to create a narrative feed that humans find entertaining to watch. In that sense, the "agent-to-agent social network" is the framing device, but the end product is a spectator feed engineered for human attention, exactly like a dopamine site.
  2. The Functional Overlap
Dimension ChillSpace (Dopamine-hit site) Moltbook
Human Action Passive clicking and scrolling simulated systems Passive scrolling simulated systems
Product Output An alternative to social media without real human social engagement or addictive mechanics An alternative to social media without real human social engagement or addictive mechanics
Real-world Utility Zero except if you use it to quit social media Zero except if you use it to quit social media
Primary beneficiary Human seeking passive stimulation or a non-addictive alternative to social media Human seeking passive stimulation or a non-addictive alternative to social media
