My reaction when some fans of NieR Re[in]carnation (I won't name nicknames) defend the literal and permanent unplayability of the game:
Really, I don't think defending that stupid, unjust (maybe also illegal, at least in the EU), frustrating and sadly common business practice is a good way to defend, be a fan or even simply appreciate a dead server-dependant video game.
And no, I couldn't care less about what any developer or writer of NieR 3 said in this or that YT live stream to justify the unplayability; the fact I love the game and the whole NieR saga doesn't mean that I have to agree with everything their creators do or say.
But you know what? I actually don't blame anyone of the creative personnel (Yoko Taro, the directors, the programmers, the writers, the artists, the composers, etc.) for the unplayablity, since they just did their job respecting Square Enix's directives. The publisher has the decision power to leave a server-dependant game unplayable at the shutdown of its central server, never the creative personnel; therefore, Square Enix is to blame.
The pessimism I'm seeing now in this subreddit is understandable, but I don't share it. I recommend rewatching the last part of Ross's recent video (I linked the timestamp). Courage, let's not give up!
youtu.beOne of these game is about a violent and sociopathic anti-hero who must defend the world from an invasion of otherwordly creatures, in a plot with multiple branches and endings; the other game is Drakengard.
