Hyperlexic but difficulty following instructions?

Help me out here.

I’m trying to find the exact term/explanation behind why I struggle with following directions.

I’m hyperlexic and have zero issues with reading comprehension.

Let me give two examples -

  1. I’m following a sewing pattern on written instructions. I try to read ahead but eventually, instead of being able to visualize what to do, the image in my brain just turns to static and I have to start over.
(Context: I’ve sewn a lot before, but struggle with spatial reasoning and math.)

  2. I’m following a YouTube video trying to fix something in my house with tools. I try to get ahead to understand what to do, but if I don’t follow along in person with what they’re doing, it turns to static in my brain and I have to slow down to follow along.
(Context: I have very little experience with tools and tinkering, so a lot of it means absolutely nothing to me.)

In reviewing these issues, this explains anxiety I have trying new things I’ve never done before, and how having a helping hand is reassuring. I find in person instruction with things I’m unfamiliar with makes learning a new skill a lot more simple, as well as physically handling objects instead of relying on visualizing.

So what the heck is the term for this?? Dyspraxia and executive dysfunction have been suggested but I don’t think they’re quite right.

A Hadestown Halloween…

Say you’re trying to get some folks on board with decorating your front yard as a Hadestown Halloween for the annual trick or treat. What kind of decorations, themes or ideas would you implement??

Day 1 of checking in on a bluray/dvd release

Just got home from theaters and WOW, I’m in awe. I’m not familiar with pro shot releases and let me tell you - years ago I flew to see Hadestown for my 31st birthday with the OG cast when they returned to Broadway, and somehow this recording is SO much more magical!!

So I’m hoping to check in every day for the news of a bluray/DVD preorder. The power of positive thinking!!

I only use one streaming service (YouTube) and even those days are numbered, so a streaming release personally means nothing to me. I’m glad it will be an option for some people, but for me I prefer to own my favorite media.

I’m hoping to not be too annoying about checking in, but I also don’t want to miss anything. So in the meantime, I’d love to hear more thoughts on the pro shot recording!

Oh, and fun fact, I went to a trinket trading event right before the movie time. One of the things I got was a plant, and I didn’t have time to drop it off at home, and I didn’t want to leave it in a hot car (90 degrees F here today)… so I brought her into the theater and now she’s named Persephone, haha.

Don’t get me wrong, I love living alone and if it was financially feasible long term, I would never live with another human being again.

But sometimes you just wanna complain to someone about something mostly inconsequential and no one is available. (My two dogs don’t count although they would it they could, haha).

I have a condition with an overactive and unpredictable immune system, although I’m starting to notice a more consistent reaction to dust (that is at least my current hypothesis).

While I do take allergy meds everyday, cleaning is still complicated and requires gloves and even a mask, as besides the occasional small hive, I tend to get swelling/tingling in my lips.

Which is what is happening right now. Just while I’ve been sitting and trying to enjoy my day off.

I’ve already taken more medication, and while this isn’t a severe reaction in the grand scheme of allergies reactions, it’s still new to me and uncomfortable and I just wanted to vent.

Anyways, thanks for letting me complain, Reddit!
