Did I bomb my career?

Hi all,

I recently started a role in portfolio / performance analytics at an extremely good asset management firm out of Big 4 audit for a ~70% pay rise. At the time, I had a verbal offer to join the FDD team in six months, but declined it for the middle office PE role. My thinking was to not put too much weight on the verbal offer, but now I am wondering if I have screwed my chances for breaking into a more front office role.

A pretty big benefit so far is the exposure to the financial models behind our investments, our investment thesis', and various other resources. It is great for learning, but I worry about not getting the actual first-hand experience. The pay is top bucket, but the work just doesn't feel super interesting to me (mainly reporting on IRRs, multiples, and various other metrics for our own tracking and capital raises)

Any thoughts, guidance, or things I should action now would be greatly appreciated. Based in Australia.

Concerns about PE role

Hi all,

I recently signed a job at a very highly regarded PE to start in a couple months and looking for further insight into my role from people in the industry. Formally, it is a middle office job, dealing with data, some portfolio analytics (returns, multiples) and reporting. It was mentioned to me that there is the opportunity to be involved in modelling as things progress. My main concern is whether I am dreaming thinking this is a real option (am I just being lied to based on what I've understood about the general responsibilities of the middle / back office), or does anyone know if this is something that actually can happen in a PE team? Ultimately took the role because of the 65% salary bump, but upon further reading I'm somewhat concerned about limiting my options in terms of building corporate finance adjacent skills.

Salary or career growth?

Hi all,

I’m currently interviewing for two roles - one in Data Analysis at a big bank, and another in corporate finance. Data role primarily focuses on wrangling and SQL / BI. The offer is 125k. The corporate finance role is 75k. My concern is that I am more interested in finance, and wonder it will stint my career options (and hence future wealth) if I go through with the data job, even if the salary is way higher. I live in Auckland, graduated university a year ago, and have worked at a Deloitte since. I do not expect to move out of Auckland in the coming years.

Would greatly appreciate any seasoned advice, if anyone else has had to make a similar decision.

Big 4 M&A vs Portfolio Performance Analyst Comparison

So I've recently graduated and have been working in Big 4 audit for last 2 years & looking to make a move. I have two conflicting offers; one internally into the M&A team, and another doing portfolio performance analysis / reporting for a large fund. The performance reporting role will pay significantly more than the internal role. I am much more interested in corporate finance / direct investment analysis.

Was hoping someone could shed some light as to pros / cons, anything I should watch out for, or whether I'd be stuck or shooting myself in the foot by taking the performance analysis role. Thanks.
