If you love birds, go see "Field Notes" exhibit - TODAY is last day

TODAY is the last chance to see the "Field Notes" exhibit in the gallery at the Port Angeles Fine Arts Center: 11AM-5PM | Entry: Free/By Donation
1203 E. Lauridsen Blvd, Port Angeles

If you love birds, you really must see this. The beautiful paintings of Pacific Northwest birds are by Ann Chadwick Reid, Natalie Niblack, Justin Gibbens, and Anne Goetzman. "Field Notes" is a visual love letter to the birds —an exhibition where art, observation, and reverence for the natural world converge. You can even here some of their songs back in that alcove if you just listen.

The 3 degrees in the corner of each painting is a reminder that these birds are all at risk if temperatures rise 3 degrees Celsius because of climate change. We now know that will happen. It doesn't mean they'll all go extinct, but many will need to go elsewhere to survive. (That's why we have an influx of Barred Owls. We'll all need to adapt.)

Free trees! Goal is more shade and tree-lined streets in neighborhoods.

The City of Port Angeles is thrilled to bring back the City Shade Street Tree Program for a fourth year! Developed in partnership with community member Paul Forrest, this program has been expanding our urban tree canopy by planting new trees in residential areas across the city.

As part of the program, residents can request up to two free trees through an online application process. Once approved, the trees will be planted in the public right-of-way, the area typically between the sidewalk and curb, near your home.

Approximately 90 trees will be available this fall, including the following species:

  • Sky Tower Ginkgo, Ginkgo biloba 'Sky Tower'
  • Persian Ironwood 'Vanessa', Parrotia persica 'Vanessa'
  • Starlight Dogwood, Cornus kousa x. nuttallii
  • Sterling Silver Linden, Tilia tomentosa 'Sterling'

Trees will be delivered to approved applicants on Saturday, October 24, following the City’s Arbor Day Celebration and Planting Demonstration. Each tree will arrive ready to plant in a #16 fabric planting bag. Applicants are responsible for planting the trees, watering them weekly during the first two summers, pruning and leaf raking as needed.

Port Angeles residents can apply now through Friday, July 31. City staff will review planting sites and work with applicants to offer species best suited for their location’s size, soil conditions, and existing utilities. Preference will be given to households who have not previously received a street tree as part of this program.

Community members who would like to support the City Shade Program are also encouraged to volunteer. Those interested are asked to submit a Volunteer Intake Form to the Community & Economic Development Department at ced@cityofpa.us

Does the lovely light at dusk have a name?

I see Webster's Woods from my house (it's where the PA Fine Arts Center is atop the hill, near Lauridsen and Chambers). Every evening at dusk, the area around and just below it has a beautiful soft glow with a tinge of yellow and pink. Someone told me it's not alpenglow* as I'd thought, at least not technically. Does anyone know what that artful light is called at this level of land?

No use taking a photo, because that doesn't capture it well at all.

* Alpenglow is an optical phenomenon where the summits of mountains appear to glow in vibrant, warm tones of pink, red, and orange. It occurs just before sunrise or immediately after sunset when the sun is below the horizon. The effect is caused by sunlight reflecting off airborne ice crystals, aerosols, and moisture. COMMUNITY INPUT MEETING re: Port Angeles Earth Church

Inviting input before it becomes official

North Olympic Library in Port Angeles
Raymond Carver Room South

https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61591085855146

This "church" is not about religion. It's a gathering for those who feel a spiritual connection with Earth and all living on it and ways to honor that. We also want to hear what you hope it will be like (and not). We encourage suggestions and requests.

If you're interested or just curious, we hope you'll attend.

Please spread the word. All are welcome.

Wild Church is the model, and our gathering will be affiliated. There's one in Sequim and one in Port Townsend already.

https://www.wildchurchnetwork.com/

FUTURE
Depending on the outcome of this meeting, regular gatherings
will start Saturday, July 18, 10:30 - Noon

Thereafter, monthly on the 3rd Saturday, 10:30 - Noon

LOCATION of monthly gatherings will be announced (awaiting conformation).
It will be an easily accessible place in central Port Angeles.

-=-=-=-

I've never used this before, so this is an experiment, but you can add your info to the Notification list if you choose:

Scouting for location for a PA Wild Church

[UPDATED] I'm hoping to co-create Port Angeles Earth Church soon and have a perfect location in mind for gatherings but am looking for alternatives -- parks that are easy for all to get to, ideally. We'll hold monthly gatherings OUTSIDE. No sermons, choirs (except birds), nor drum circles but an opening ritual, maybe a short reading, then wandering individually among nature surrounding us, followed by relatively short discussion of what we noticed, felt, thought about. If possible, concluding with music. Mid-morning on the 3rd Saturday, BYO lunch afterward if those who join choose to do that.

There's a national network (see link above), and there are gatherings in Sequim and Port Townsend already.

I have a perfect location in mind, so I've asked for permission to hold the gathering there, but that's iffy so I'm asking for suggestions. The outdoor site needs to be in a lovely area, open to the public, with roaming space, and ideally where people can get to it by bike, walking, or bus, not just by driving.

I'll appreciate any and all suggestions of locations to consider.

Crucial Elwah Watershed Public Survey

3-part post, please spread the word

The WA Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is conducting an analysis of the ecological and conservation values of the Elwha watershed on state-owned lands managed by DNR.

PLEASE take the time to respond to their survey, because the outcome is critical for Clallam County residents and visitors. It’s our water source, and the watershed and adjacent surroundings must be protected from clearcutting in certain areas and from drilling for oil, mining minerals, and industrial development, such as data centers, in all areas. There’s even a question where you can add specific sites or areas that you value.

Add your input here:

From MyClallamCounty.com (KONP):
It’s important to note that when a conservation area is created by the DNR, there are mechanisms that make the beneficiaries whole, such as the trust land transfer program which funds acquisition of lands to replace those being conserved. [Translation: The tax revenue that our community gets from selling clearcutting rights to these areas will come from alternative sites, so it won’t be lost.]
