How do you stop reading the Bible on autopilot?

I’m 54 and I’ve been around the Bible my whole life. I’ve heard the stories in church, read them, listened to them, and talked about them for years. Right now I’m reading through the Bible from Genesis to Revelation, one chapter at a time, and I’ve noticed that sometimes I know the story so well that I start reading on autopilot. I don’t want to just finish a chapter and move on. I want to read with more purpose and actually get something out of it. For those of you who have been reading the Bible for a long time, what do you do when a passage is really familiar? Do you look for small details you missed before, ask certain questions, pray before you read, focus on one person in the story, or do something else? I’d really like practical advice from people who have dealt with this themselves. What helps you keep familiar Bible stories from feeling routine or boring?

High school teachers with classroom aquariums — how do you manage weekends and school breaks?

I’m a high school Biology teacher and have started using aquariums as living ecosystems in my classroom. I’d love to hear from other high school teachers who keep classroom aquariums.

I’m especially curious about how you handle weekends, Thanksgiving/Christmas/Spring Break, and summer, particularly if you don’t live close to your school.

If you have a classroom aquarium, I’d love to know:

  • What size and type of aquarium do you have?
  • What fish, plants, invertebrates, or other organisms do you keep?
  • How far do you live from your school?
  • What do you do with the aquarium over normal weekends?
  • How do you handle week-long or longer school breaks?
  • Do you ever have to drive to school just to check the aquarium?
  • Do students participate in maintenance or data collection?
  • Have you had any disasters or learned anything the hard way?
  • What equipment or automation has made maintaining a classroom aquarium easier?
  • If you could start your classroom aquarium over, what would you do differently?

I’m interested in eventually maintaining multiple classroom aquariums, so I’d really like to learn what has worked—and what hasn’t—from teachers who have actually done this. Pictures of your classroom setups would be great too!

Best Aquarium Supply Store

If you’re into aquariums—or thinking about starting one—I highly recommend checking out HD Aquatics & Electronics. They’re located at 9608 I Ave in Hesperia and carry tropical fish, aquatic plants, aquariums and supplies.
I’ve had a really positive experience there. It’s great having a locally owned aquarium shop right here in the High Desert where you can get supplies, livestock, plants, and knowledgeable help instead of relying on the big chains.
High Desert aquarium folks, give HD Aquatics a visit and support a local small business!
