This might be a dumb question, but is there some trick to securing the floor mats to the floor anchors?

I tried following the instructions as shown on the last attached picture, but it feels like I have to use an excessive amount of force. I even tried bending the anchor up a little with pliers and wedging a small flathead screwdriver in with no luck.

Overall very happy with it, though the A/C controls are dumb.
