Titanium Grail Watch of the Day

Credor Locomotive, ref. GCCR997. 38.8mm diameter, 41.7mm lug-to-lug, 8.9mm thickness; Seiko High-Intensity Titanium, sapphire crystal with inner anti-reflective coating, screw-down crown, no lumination; automatic caliber CR01 movement, 4hz, +15/-10 spd, 45hrs power reserve, 4800 m/A magnetic resistance, Diashock shock absorber; 100m water resistance. Matched with a High-Intensity titanium bracelet.

A Gerald Genta design and a true “if you know you know” watch. Credor uses a pedestrian CR01, a dressed-up Seiko calibre 6L35 movement with striping, blued screws, and gilt bridges. The movement is hidden by a closed caseback. Seiko High-Intensity Titanium is the same alloy Grand Seiko uses on the vast majority of its titanium-cased watches. The Credor Locomotive’s titanium surfaces are brushed and meticulously finished. Zaratsu polishing is applied to the bezel and lugs, producing sharp, distortion-free edges that enhance light reflection and highlight the watch's angular geometry.

Longest time

Chat GPT states the longest time between two events is roughly 13.8 billion years, spanning from the Big Bang to present day.

I know this to be false.

It is a scientific fact that the longest time is between the notice that your watch has shipped and its delivery date, roughly 100 billion years.

Titanium Grail Watch of the Day

IWC Schaffhausen Portugieser Chronograph Ceratanium, ref. IW371631. 41mm diameter, 13mm thick, 48mm lug-to-lug, 20mm lug width; Ceratanium case; 30m water resistance; sapphire crystal;  IWC calibre 69355 (4hz) with 46hrs power reserve.

MSRP: $14,600 usd

Ceratanium is a patented composite material developed over eight years by IWC Schaffhausen that combines the lightness and strength of titanium with the hardness and scratch resistance of ceramic (approximately 2,000 hv).  All of the components in a Ceratanium case are milled, turned and drilled from a grade 5 titanium blank. Then it is heated and the surface of the metal is ceramized. The end result is a striking, matte black color. Ceratanium cases are available on the Portugieser Chronograph Ceratanium and the TOP GUN Ceratanium.

Article: Steel vs Titanium Dive Watches

Recent article on Two Broke Watch Snobs, Steel vs Titanium Dive Watches: Which Makes More Sense After Hands-on Testing.

I wish the article would have explored some of the characteristics of titanium, such as superior corrosion-resistance, hypoallergenic feature, and self-healing properties. It is also helpful for the consumer to know of the “hardness” of the various titanium grades.

On the other hand, the article does use the word “feel” 23 times, so maybe it was never meant to be informative or persuasive. 😂🤣

<$1,000 Titanium Diver Showdown!

Below is a comparison of two popular, well-spec’d titanium dive watches under $1,000 usd.

The first is the Baltic Aquascaphe Titanium. Grade 5 titanium case, 41mm diameter, 47mm lug-to-lug, 13.3mm thick, 20mm lug width;  120 click unidirectional ceramic bezel; double dome sapphire glass; C3 X1 Super-Luminova; Automatic Miyota 9039 4hz with 42hrs power reserve; screwed-down crown; 300m water resistance. Sold on a rubber strap. MSRP: $832 (purchased at MSRP with no tax, shipping, or tariffs).

The second is the Citizen Promaster “Fujitsubo” ref. NB6026-56L. Grade 2 titanium case with Duratect Platinum hardening treatment, 41mm diameter, 49mm lug-to-lug, 12.3mm thick, 20mm lug width;  60 click unidirectional Super Titanium bezel; sapphire glass; Super-Luminova; Automatic Miyota 9051 4hz with 42hrs power reserve; screwed-down crown; 200m water resistance. Sold on a grade 2 titanium bracelet with Duratect Platinum hardening treatment. MSRP: $1,195 (purchased for $765 after taxes and shipping).

Case and Finishing
The Baltic is well-finished with brushing on the case and ceramic bezel. The finish is satin and an oversized crown is used.

The Citizen has a cheaper feel and the brushing is not as good as the Baltic. The Fujitsubo is advertised as having a Duratect Platinum coating that increases the scratch-resistance to more than 1,000 Vickers. The result is a milkiness to the finish. The bracelet has poorer brushing, a similar milkiness, and contains polished highlights between the links.

The Baltic appears and “feels” like the premium piece. The Citizen appears more “tool-like.” The Baltic is a worthy desk-diver while the Citizen is more capable in the field.

Winner: Baltic

Movement
Essentially the same. The 9031 is a no-date movement (no phantom click), and the 9051 is a date movement. Baseline accuracy is the same.

Winner: Tie

Confidence in Reliability
The Citizen Fujitsubo is ISO 6425 certified, which means it has undergone testing for water resistance (The watch sits in water at 125% of its rated depth, in this case 250 meters, for two hours); thermal shock (The watch is dunked in hot water (40°C) and then cold water (5°C) with less than one minute to switch between them); reliability (The watch is placed in shallow water (30 cm) for 50 hours); condensation (The watch is heated up. A cold drop of water is put on the glass. If fog appears inside, it fails); and shock & magnetism (The watch takes hard hits and must handle everyday magnets. The bezel must also take a strong pull force so it does not turn by accident). This Citizen is advertised as 16000 A/m, which far exceeds the ISO 764 standard of 4,800 A/m while keeping its accuracy within ±30 seconds/day.

The Baltic is not ISO tested and makes no claims regarding magnetism.

Winner: Citizen

Availability and Price and Warranty
The Baltic is a French microbrand and has few authorized dealers around the world. It seems generally available for purchase through the Baltic site. The Baltic warranty is two years. The MSRP is $832 usd and you are unlikely to find a discount.

Citizen is widely available world-wide. ** **Five year limited manufacturer's warranty. You get an extra 1-year warranty if you register the watch with Citizen. The MSRP is $1,195, but widely available at approximately $800 usd.

Winner: Citizen

Ultimately, the Citizen is the better tool watch. Even though the Baltic claims a greater water resistance, the Citizen is actually certified to its claimed depth. The Citizen also has an added layer of protective coating, making it at least twice as scratch-resistant as Baltic’s grade 5 titanium case.

On the other hand, the Baltic has a better finish and a cleaner look. It is the choice for the office or happy hour. Hey, it’s five o’clock somewhere!

Really don’t care for Timex

Timex Marlin Jet Titanium, ref. TW3A00500. 40mm diameter, 14.5mm thick; grade 2 titanium; hesalite box-shaped crystal; 50m water resistance; Seiko NH34A, a caller-style GMT at 3Hz, 41hrs power reserve. Pre-order $549 usd

A case softer and more scratch-prone than 316L stainless steel, 14.5mm thick, no sapphire, pedestrian NH34 movement, and 5bar water-resistance. I am completely underwhelmed.

Some info on Seiko Titanium

A previous post gave info concerning the various Citizen Duratect levels/treatments for hardened titanium cases. The best Duratect level seems to be up to 2,500 hv in hardness!

Here is an article about Seiko’s titanium hardening processes. The first is called Diashield, which is a hardness coating applied to grade 2 titanium. Essentially this makes the case a little more scratch resistant than stainless steel. These Diashield treated Seiko models are called “high intensity titanium.” Diashield is not conducive to polishing, and is used in less expensive Seiko watches.

The process for hardening Grand Seiko titanium models is different. There is no hardness coating applied. Instead, the cases are actually made out of a proprietary titanium alloy called Brilliant Hard Titanium. This type of titanium can be finished to high degree including Zaratsu polishing. Brilliant Hard Titanium is claimed to be twice as hard and scratch resistant (approximately 400 hv) as ubiquitous 316L stainless steel.

Citizen Super Titanium

Citizen Super Titanium is a true source of confusion ! “Super Titanium” is the name Citizen uses for most of its titanium models, but not all of its titanium models have the same scratch resistance. Lower cost models generally have scratch resistance at levels comparable to grade 5 titanium.
