My boy is dealing with hyperplasia in his left ear.
I have a seven year old cocker spaniel who truly is the sweetest happiest marble boy you could ever meet. We rescued him from an unethical backyard breeder when he was a puppy. He has had a multitude of health issues ranging from inflammatory bowel disease to CCL surgery at the age of four to early onset arthritis to years of constant ear infections that have most recently caused hyperplasia in his left ear canal. The years of long term inflammation has caused the ear canal lining to grow thicker, forming a large mass that is now blocking his ear canal. These growths can trap wax and debris causing infections to constantly return.
He has had Lazer therapy and, received rounds of steroids along with apequel. He appears to do well when he's on the steroids but, as soon as the medication is done we are back to square one.
Our next options are an aggressive round of anti-inflammatories or a procedure called a total ear canal ablation where he will be functionally deaf in that ear. I understand that the narrowing of the diseased ear canal means that he likely has no useful hearing in the affected ear currently, however, I'm struggling with making the decision to do a full ear ablation. Has anyone else gone through this with their dog and, how did they manage afterwards.
