The appointment of Dr. Montek Singh Ahluwalia as Chairperson of Tamil Nadu’s Revenue Augmentation Committee is a significant decision.

Who is he?

✅Former Finance Secretary of India

✅Former Commerce Secretary

✅Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission from 2004 to 2014

✅First Director of the IMF’s Independent Evaluation Office

✅A key member of the policymaking team associated with India’s 1991 economic reforms

✅Padma Vibhushan recipient

He was not an IAS officer. He entered government as an economist and went on to occupy some of India’s most influential economic-policy positions.

His committee will examine:

💠New and underutilised revenue sources

💠PSU dividends

💠Government land and asset monetisation

💠Rates, fees and exemptions

Tamil Nadu cannot fund its growing developmental commitments through borrowings alone. It must strengthen its own revenue without placing an unfair burden on honest taxpayers.
