how do you know if you’d like assessment?

i’ve been deciding between an msw and clinical psych phd for a while now and while i probably won’t get into the latter anyway i am curious: a lot of people say if you want to do assessments you will need the phd. by assessments, do we literally mean like screenings / tests for a dsm diagnosis? what does it entail, and why do some people like it?

thanks.

will firms work the milbank special bonus into end of year bonuses?

my firm still hasn’t matched the june salary bump, so i’m hoping that at least year-end bonuses will account for the special/summer bonuses milbank offered. any thoughts or word on this?

hiking carrier suggestions?

we’re trying to get our little girl into hiking with us and so far she’s doing great! but we are starting to plan some longer hikes that will simply be too much for her, and we want to be prepared with a good carrier she can crawl into when she gets tired. has anyone here used one they like? it will be cool enough that we’re not too worried about overheating, but it would be great to have something we could use year round

she’s about 9lbs currently if that helps!

Just moved here, don’t have trash setup yet, ideas for where to bring trash?

Basically the title! I am vaguely aware that there are dump sites where you can pay to dispose of your trash but I am having a hard time finding clear info on this online! It looks like a lot of these places are for commercial disposals. We just need somewhere to dump our packing paper and the few garbage bags we generate in the next week or so. Any info is very much appreciated!

First timer, confused about audio output

I’m getting my girlfriend the AT-LP60X for her birthday but I’m not sure what else J might need to get to finish the setup. Ive tried looking this up in the thread but Im still confused and I don’t wanna use AI

How do these things produce volume? My understanding is that you have to hook it up to something, but is it a speaker, an amp, a preamp? I don’t even really know what those last two are. Do I have to check for specific outputs that will work for this player, get special chords?

Explanations like I’m dumb are very very much appreciated

EDIT: Okay I just looked through the guide in the mod post— it looks like I can get powered speakers OR a receiver + passive speakers to go with this player. is that right? that’s it?

Cafe Chayhana Is Bangin

went there on a whim, wasn’t really sure what “central asian” cuisine would entail. turns out it’s a blend of russian, chinese, uzbek, all just so scrumptious. reviews told me to get the manty and they totally stood up to expectations. i don’t have a picture but they’re kind of like a pierogi with beef and onions inside and sour cream to dip but then a much more delicate dumpling dough, more like east asian dumplings. for main, i got the kuurdak which was just amazing. really tender slow cooked beef and potatoes in a light broth (not like soup, i’m just saying it wasn’t a very heavy stewing liquid). served with a carrot salad i will be thinking about for a long time. i asked for an extra side it was that good.

it’s been a while since i’ve had a cuisine that was totally new to me and really surprised me, and this was just super good

At what point do you pay off low interest loans?

I am in the incredibly fortunate position where i now have the money to pay off the rest of my loans without touching my emergency fund (plus a good bit extra). The interest rate on the loans i have remaining is 3.30% though, which is costing me less than my HYS account is earning me at 3.75%. That’s also less than the return rate on my taxable investment account.

All the guidance i’ve seen online and heard anecdotally is that it doesn’t make sense to use money to pay off loans when that money could be earning you money at a faster rate than the loans are costing you, which seems to be the situation i’m in. i get the logic there, but does that mean you just never pay them off then? At what point does it make sense to? i have a great credit score so i don’t really know what the benefit to paying them off is if it’s going to actually cost me more money over time to do so. that said, it seems really weird to just let it sit when i could easily pay it off.

can someone explain to me like im 12 when it makes sense to pay the rest off? are there risks or impacts of having loans (less than 20k) that i’m not considering?

EDIT: Agree with the commenters saying to focus on maxing out retirement — I am already on track to do that / the money to pay off the loans would be coming from savings, not income

Outdoor independence moving to/living in anchorage?

hello anchorage! my girlfriend has an interview with a job in your lovely city next week, and so we are considering a big move from a lower-48 major city. the biggest draw for the both of us is the outdoors. everything we have seen just looks so beautiful, and we are really craving more nature in our lives.

that said, my worry with alaskan outdoors is the wildlife. i’ve already read how it’s relatively safe if you carry bear spray, make noise, and hike in a group. the problem is, i really like hiking alone. if one of the main ways people stay safe hiking in alaska is going in groups, i want to be realistic about how much outdoor alone time i am really going to get.

my girlfriend and i also both love backpacking, but i don’t think anywhere we’ve been yet compares to alaska as far as risks and wildlife.

overall my concern then is how much are we really going to enjoy the outdoors if between the darkness, the bears, and the moose, it’s actually just a little too scary to get that full wilderness immersion peace (hiking alone or backpacking).

im hoping this group can help me get a better picture of how people who live in anchorage and surrounding areas deal with this stuff and whether we’re thinking about it the right way. thanks all

Sleep Routine Advice Needed?

We’ve got a 9 week old iggy girl as of this past weekend, and we could really use some advice on night time potty breaks!

We don’t want her sleeping in our bed, and have a strong preference for her not sleeping in our room, so we built her a little enclosure in the guest bedroom walk-in closet. It’s pretty big (approx 3 by 4 ft) and we obviously don’t close the door. She has room for a crate in the back, with more room in front of the crate and on the sides. We also put a gate up at the closet entrance to block her exit, and so far it’s working pretty well to keep her in and keep her safe (after a lot of troubleshooting and middle-of-the-night puppy cam-inspired adjustments lol). We have a nightlight outside the closet, and a space heater just outside that keeps the room nice and warm.

The only issue we’re still dealing with is that she is not even close to potty trained. The past two nights she has pooped outside of her crate in the area between the crate and the wall (maybe a 6-8 inch hallway like space). The second time, she ate it, and stepped in it, and it got all over.

I know some people on here take their puppies out in the middle of the night, but so far (1) she is not at all inclined to poop outside, (2) we wouldn’t even know when to take her/when she has to poop, (3) we would really like to avoid going to her in the night because we don’t want to hurt her progress on getting used to being in there alone through the night, which she’s getting a little better with every night.

Are we horrible parents if this continues for a little while until she learns to alert us when she has to go or until she’s able to hold it until the morning? I feel terrible that she’s stuck in there sometimes with her own poop, and if we’re doing something wrong I’d want to know sooner rather than later.

I’ve been twice now, both times I got the nom bo kho (beef jerky papaya salad) and ohhhhhh lord it’s so damn good. I’ve never gotten this dish elsewhere so I’m curious if this is actually the best version of it, but I love it. Sour, a little sweet, some kick, great blend of textures and tons of fresh herbs that still don’t overpower the other flavors. Weirdly the beef was totally different this time versus last time, but good both times! Definitely tough but yano it’s beef jerky. I’m really in it for everything but the beef though, so not judging that too critically.

Not pictured, but this time I also got pho ga (chicken pho). Broth was delicious and clean and savory and deeply flavored but the chicken was tough and pretty dry. I’d get it again regardless, but not the best option if you’re a pho ga connoisseur!

Hi there! basically the title. I am hoping for some targeted suggestions on what types of therapies/modalities/resources would be the best for someone in my situation. Kind of desperate here so i’d really appreciate any success stories too. lmportant context:

- Issue: Used to be sort of ambivalent and dissociatey about sex. Now actively scared, easily triggered, often uncomfortable even just watching TV sex scenes. Cannot really participate in sex with my loving partner.

- Cause: Idrk! But I know it at least involves (i) a relationship with a predatory age gap and repeated instances of questionable consent, (ii) ambiguous childhood experiences that probably also were not totally consensual, (iii) probably some internalized homophobia.

- Things I have already tried: (1) EMDR for 1.5 years, which helped in many ways but unfortunately not with this, though we tried. (2) Talk therapy on and off for decades with at least 2 truly skilled therapists, however neither really helped with this or had a sex-therapy specialty. (3) Couples therapy, for several months, which while helpful did not significantly impact this issue (though some small wins). (4) Self help. I’ve read Come As You Are plus the workbook, a few other complex PTSD resources. Open to other forms of self help but not really unless it’s specifically going to address some of what I’ve flagged as issues I’m dealing with (looking for targeted resources).

Thank you so much in advance for any input on this!! I’m willing to try just about anything that has actually worked for someone else!

Last August I got a tin of incredible boquerones from a cafe in Stockholm and I’m still thinking about them. I took a picture of the tin and brand name but have had trouble finding this exact tin online. Anyone have better luck? If not, has anyone tried these and can recommend a similar tin? I’ve done some googling but all the suggestions look nothing like these

EDIT: Okay I ended up finding a link to their website but they don’t ship to the united states!! https://pujadosolano.com/en/producto/cantabrian-white-marinated-anchovies-in-olive-oil-can-50-g/

Went on a saturday night, reservation at the bar with a view of the kitchen. Cool space, good service, but let’s get to the only thing that really matters: the food.

We ended up ordering 3 dishes total. We started with an Akohoshi Miso (the namesake) and the special that week, a black garlic ramen. My girlfriend really liked hers (black garlic) but after trying mine (Akahoshi miso), agreed it was much better, so we ended up getting another order of the latter and packing the black garlic to go. I didn’t like the black garlic at all really. It tasted almost bitter, and just not as smooth and rich as the miso broth. I liked that it had wood ear mushrooms though.

The akahoshi was really really good. Super rich and savory and clean tasting. The noodles were excellent and the toppings were generous. Egg perfectly done, chasu super tender. I definitely felt it was worth the $19. But when the second akohoshi miso came out, it was not the same as the first. Still good, but had almost a burnt dirty taste to it? Just wasn’t as clean and I really didn’t enjoy the broth that much independent from the noodles. Pretty disappointing.

All in all I’d go back and would def try another special but i hope this was a fluke and there’s a little more consistency next time.

This is a little silly but i get really skeeved out by canned tuna, though i love eating it lol. I end up picking out so many of the pieces that look weird to me (dark spots etc) and am usually only really comfortable with the bigger solid chunks (compared to the little bits floating around). I know this is pretty picky of me but that’s just how it is lol. So far I’ve only really purchased starkist.

Can anyone recommend an alternative? Again I am not even necessarily looking for better taste (i think the starkist is good!) i’m really just looking for like better quality chunks and packing that will ick me out less. Obviously would appreciate steps up in taste though too!
