Worst US Job Market Since 2008

I just had a video meeting with someone from my state's reemployment office. He confirmed to me that this is, according to the DOL, the worst job market since 2008. I believe it. So we aren't imagining it, and we're not failures if we're struggling to find work.

That's my thought for the day. That and the fact that a lot of people have just given up even trying to find work: https://www.cnbc.com/2026/07/02/job-seekers-giving-up-labor-force-participation-rate-falls-to-lowest-in-50-years-outside-of-covid-era.html

Zip Recruiter giving rubbish listings

Zip Recruiter has always been kind of a mixed bag in my experience, but lately I'm seeing more and more bogus "jobs" listed on it. I clicked on two in the past 20 minutes that each led to other "job boards" that either wanted me to pay to sign up (no, thank you) or had jobs that , when I searched the companies' own websites, either didn't exist or were clearly AI-generated BS.

Then I clicked one more "job" on Zip that took me to a whole list of companies hiring "AI-augmented virtual [insert job title here]" with descriptions that all included some version of "the job may be full- or part-time and will potentially involve some or all of" followed by a random-looking list of skills and responsibilities.

So I guess this is the present and possibly the future of job ads now? What a crock.

Trying to reduce meat and fish intake while keeping protein high

I'm looking for ideas, recipes, tips and tricks, etc.!

So here's my situation: Prices for meat and decent fish are climbing and I'm interested in altering my diet to get the best bang for my buck while also looking out for my health. I'm in my early 60s and relatively active, and I know that people my age need extra protein to avoid muscle loss. I want to gain muscle anyway to replace what I likely already have lost over the years. I also want to lose body fat.

I lost quite a bit of weight more than a decade ago on a low-carb, high-protein diet, but unfortunately that required avoiding most vegetarian protein sources like legumes, etc. and it eventually came back over time when I went back to eating more carbs and being less active. I can't afford to go the low-carb route now given the price of meat and fish, so I'm looking to incorporate legumes and higher-protein grains as a significant source of protein. I do not really like tofu, natto, or most soy-based products - a little is okay but I'm not going to build a menu around them. And I really don't like kale other than a little bit added to soups or stews. By "little bit" I mean enough that you can see it for some color and maybe texture, but not enough to really count for much in the finished product.

As for animal-based ingredients, I enjoy dairy, eggs, and I'm open to incorporating meat or fish as an addition to dishes for flavor/texture but not as the star of the show. I do NOT like clams, oysters, or most shellfish in general. I will eat shrimp if I'm in the right mood for its texture. Yes I do have some food texture issues but they're fairly insignificant. Oh, and I don't eat organ meats.

I love the taste of Indian food, the hotter the better. In fact I I like spicy and savory things in general. I'm not diabetic (if anything I'm mildly disposed to hypoglycemia) and I have normal blood pressure, etc. I do limit my salt intake somewhat, for reasons of personal preference. I'm especially interested in things I can make several servings at a time and freeze, as cooking for one every day is a hassle and sometimes I just want to heat up a plate or bowl of something, you know?

My main concerns:

  • Low-cost
  • Low-sodium
  • High fiber
  • High protein
  • Not reliant on soy
  • Variety so I don't get bored

Please share ideas and recipes!

I'm so tired...

ISTG I just want to win the damn lottery to the tune of a few million and not have to deal with ANY of this shit anymore. Tired of sorting through countless job boards, trying to figure out which listings are even real jobs, deciding if I can realistically afford to commute to wherever the job is if it is real, and then crunching numbers to see if I will be able to live on what it says it will pay. Also, there's wondering whether that job will continue to exist for very long once I take it, provided I am fortunate enough to be hired, because I've taken jobs before that didn't even last a year because something changed with the company itself and my job got eliminated.

What a fckedup way to run a society, economy, etc.

MFP M148DW Printer new wifi connection

I really don't understand why HP makes us go in circles. Based on the instructions, in order to connect the printer to a new wifi system, it must first be connected to that wifi system. Is it just me or is this completely circular?

Tired of essay tests on job applications

"Tell me about a time when you had to manage a difficult stakeholder... "

"Tell me about a time when you had to resolve an intra-office conflict... "

How about not asking me to write an essay when I'm trying to send you my resume? I already have to type everything from my resume into your portal, and now you want me to give you long-form answers to questions that used to be part of the interview process? Or am I the only one annoyed by this? It seems to happen most often when I am pressed for time and I just figured I'd do one more application before I need to be somewhere.

Galley kitchen workaround?

I live in a pathetically tiny apartment with an eat-in galley kitchen that opens onto my bedroom hallway at one end and has a doorway to the living room just before the point where the kitchen widens to accommodate a ridiculously tiny table and two chairs. (I had to put my regular table and the other chairs into storage, along with half my other furniture. I'm only planning to live here a year or two at most due to economic constraints, then move into a larger place again.) I have a small buffet I actually do use, though, for the sake of its drawers and cupboards needed to hold necessary kitchen items because the kitchen has very little storage space. Thing is, it's crammed awkwardly into one end of the living room.

I love to cook so I'm not a fan of galley kitchens anyway and I have no real need to have a walkable opening from the kitchen directly to the living room, so I'm so considering moving the buffet to that opening, facing the kitchen, and placing another small 3-drawer chest against it on the living room side to create a sort of pass-through window effect. It would have the following two advantages: increases storage and worktop space in the kitchen itself, and allows me to free up space at the far end of the living room for a bookshelf.

Any downside I'm not seeing? Would it be too weird to do this, or should I go for it?
