Good Budget Options For German Learning

What are some good options to learn German? An app, book, or really anything works so long as it is condensed into a path (not spread between a bunch of sources). If possible for free or lifetime, but a cheap subscription is fine.

What’s good language with a non-Latin script?

I speak English natively and I’ve been learning Spanish in school (done a little CI w/ dreaming at home but I’m struggling to stay motivated, might read some). Somewhat recently I did a little bit of Latin but I have been super consistent.

I would really like to learn a language (dead or in use) with a different alphabet because I think that would be cool. I was considering Ancient Greek but that feels silly because you know… normal Greek exists.

To give a bit for context, I‘m in High School. I like STEM (specifically love physics). I’d like something practical enough to motivate me but niche enough to be a little bit of a flex. If it has use in Math and Science that would also be great. I’m interested in a different alphabet because I like to take notes and I think it might be cool to write my todo lists and random thoughts with something you wouldn’t understand with a glance.

What would you suggest to fulfill my desire of different alphabet*?*

Intermediate Trombone Shopping

I’ve been told by some ”Pick an instrument based on how it plays, not the price”. I definitely agree with that, but as an intermediate trombonist (going to shop for a F-attachment trombone, possibly switching to large bore) how can I figure out if something plays well?

I‘m not well experienced with F-attachments, and I‘ve never played a large bore instrument. Is there a good way to gauge what is the instrument and what is me playing something new? Any other shopping tips? (i have a ysl-354, upgrading likely through music and arts so I won’t be paying full price)

Thank you!

What is this trombone?

Conn trombone, small bore and shank. It was bought in 1983 used for my mom. I might upgrade my YSL-354 for an F-attachment trombone and I’m thinking this might be a good jazz and marching horn. Can anyone identify it?

Enjoyment of unenjoyable things

I am a rising 10th grader, and I’ve started practicing more outside of school quite a bit more. I’m considering applying to districts or an out of school band program but many of them require scales.

Scales among other things (embrasure, sight reading, etc), for me, are extremely boring. Anytime I practice them I get frustrated and stop playing for the day. It feels like bashing my head against a wall. I’ve tried practicing slowly but that rarely helps and is sometimes even more painful than practicing fast.

Is there anyway to make scales enjoyable.

How do you all make some of the tedious and boring parts of practice fun?

Maintaining chops while away without instrument

I play tenor trombone in high school and I’ve sort gone on a month and a half lock in. Summer is great but I’m going to be traveling a bunch. Because I’ve been working to reach higher notes because I might be 1st trombone next year, I’d really like to stay in shape during the weeks I’ll be gone (mostly scattered 1 week trips). Would it be silly to bring my mouthpiece and spend like 20 minutes buzzing everyday, is there a better way, or is there a good mouthpiece routine to do.

(Side note: the trombone Reddit has been so useful to me. I can’t thank everyone enough for their advice)

What are good ways to learn to sing (and buzz) correct notes?

I play trombone in HS and I‘ve been wanting to sing more. I joined the before school chorus for kids in band & strings near the end of last year but come the start of this upcoming school year I’d like to be able to sing correct notes. For whatever reason, when I buzz my mouthpiece or sing I really really struggle to produce correct notes. Even when I’m in a comfy part of my range I cannot be in tune or even close to the correct notes. I’m really not sure how to improve my ear mostly. Ive heard about “sing with a drone and listen for the beats” but “the beats“ don’t exist in my mind, it just doesn’t really work for me. How did yall learn to sing correct notes without being yards off, how would you recommend I learn. (all of this would be done with reference ofc, this is in the realm of singing/buzzing with like a pitch pipe) (Im also fairly new to Reddit, I put ”resource” I hope that is the correct “flair”)

Straight trombone player moving to F attachment

Im having a hard time figuring out when to use the trigger for Cs and Bs. Also for music like the above is it better or worse to hold trigger (You could do 1 T1 1 or T1 T1 T1). Also are there any bad habits I need to avoid?

EDIT: THIS IS INTENDED WITH TRIGGER

Improvement on range as a intermediate

I wouldn’t be the guy who only cares about range but… everyone allways says “be yourself”. One of my favorite thing about trombone is the feeling when you randomly unlock some new note. But it never feels consistent, like you hit the note for the first time, but then it’s a struggle to play and tongue and it’s kinda painful. So, for an intermediate trombone player, what is a good way to increase your range and lip flexibility.

(For reference my current range is the one note below Bb on the bottom line, up to high F, I can hit G# but not consistently, my F is somewhat consistent but I can’t allways tongue it depending on the day)

Looking for a cool (cheap) brass instrument to try

I play tenor trombone in high school and I’ve been wanting to try learn another cool brass instrument. I have a budget of about $150 but I could stretch it to $200/$250 if needed. Any ideas?
