shredding as a warmup?

On many gigs where I’ve sat in with some heavy jazz players (trombones, trumpets, etc). For some reason as a warmup they play what sounds like the most random intense fast bop licks that I can’t get my head around.

Are they just showing off?
Does it actually help them warmup / get ready to play a jazz solo?
Is this just what a lifetime of jazz leads you to?

I’m someone who “can” solo, but haven’t been trained or gone to school for it, so I have only an understanding on playing acceptable note patterns and not extended licks.

Why do my lips get swollen/thick during gigs even though I already warm up at home?

I always do a proper warm up before leaving the house, but once I’m at the gig, my lips still start to feel thick or swollen, and my sound and endurance get worse even I did short warm up in the hall, Has anyone else experienced this? What could be causing it?

STONER BRASS DOOM! You haven't heard this before!

I am continuing to work on a new project...

I remind you that there is no music created using artificial intelligence here. Only live guitar, bass. The working wind instruments were made using VST, but there is already an agreement to record a saxophonist and a trumpeter! Good luck to all!

"Stars and Stripes Forever" arr. Trombone Choir

Here is my arrangement of Sousa's "Stars and Stripes Forever" for trombone choir. This version features only the latter half of the march, and has 8 trombone parts. I performed this myself on my bass trombone. LMK if you want me to include the full version!

If you are interested in this arrangement, my DMs are open!

I hope you enjoy it!

Arban exercises in one breath

so, I have been learning trombone for 5 years now, and I struggle hard with my breathing. It's never enough air. I think that part of the trick is taking deep breaths while at the same time just using the right amount of air for playing each note, but it seems impossible to "strive to the exercise in one breath".

I take a deep breath at the beginning and manage to play a portion. then i run out of aur just when i need it the most for the higher notes and need to take a quick breath (not easy with all the 16ths!), to play like 2 more measures, and then a quick breath every measure. I feel that I simply don't have enough time to breathe.

Is this normal? Will it become better if I just keep doing the exercises. Or am I doing something wrong here?

Another problem I have is quick single tonguing ... i cannot even speak that quickly, so i am wondering how to speed up the exercises. Can my tongue get quicker?

European Brand Suggestion

Hello guys! I've been living in Germany for some months and I'll head back to my country, but I'd like to maybe take a European trombone with me.

At home, I play in a symphonic band, a folkloric group (traditional Andean music), and sometimes at catholic processions. In general, my sound has always been quite bright, so my teachers at the symphonic band suggested that I get a trombone that gives more of an opaque sound. For the folkloric and the processions, good projection and playing outskirts is usually what's needed (although sometimes the folk group could play inside a theater).

All my 15 years of experience, I've played small bore tenor trombone with no attachment, and I'd like to try tenor trombone with F attachment. As I guess that it'd take some practice to get used to it, I was thinking maybe a second hand trombone of a good brand could be good until I feel I play good enough to maybe invest on a new one.

Does any European brand and model of trombone comes to your mind that you could recommend? I'm down for suggestions from this great community ;)

Neck guard on your trombone is safe?

Is a neck guard necessary? I have one, but I only wear it when I play the trombone. I take it off before putting my trombone back in its case.

Considering upgrading from an intermediate to professional trombone

I am a senior in high school, and I currently play a Yamaha YSL-548GO, an intermediate large bore F attachment trombone, with a Bach 5G mouthpiece. My comfortable range is from F2-Db5. I recently got into a youth orchestra. I've tried playing a few pro-level trombones and notice very little difference, even when playing excerpts like the Bolero solo, unless I play fortissimo, at which point the sound spreads on my intermediate horn but stays stable on the professional models I've tried.

I intend to play through college, if not beyond it.

Would now be a good time to upgrade to a professional level trombone?

Morningstar or Dennis Wick?

Hello! I'm currently purchasing bass bone mutes for college and I am split between 2 different straight mutes. I am getting the Morningstar cup mute, and was wondering if I should get the Morningstar straight, or the Dennis Wick straight (both copper bottoms)? Ive played on a Dennis Wick and I loved the sound but am curious to see if there is anyone who has played on both can give some opinions or even suggest a different straight mute! Thank you!!

Mouthpiece hunt

Is there a trombone equivalent of this tuba mouthpiece? I saw someone using it on TikTok and everyone asks”hey what mouthpiece is that” but he keeps gatekeeping so I’m taking it into my own hands to try to find it, any pointers.

Struggling to find motivation to keep playing

Not really sure what this post will be but I guess we’ll find out lmao.

I want to start this off by saying that music has always been what I’ve loved. Ever since I was little dancing with my dad to his records, to seeing a symphony poster and telling my mom I wanted to play violin on the big stage like that guy, it’s been something I’ve always loved and I’ve worked hard to play it as much as I can.

My main (and favourite to play) instrument right now is trombone and next year I will be a senior in high school, hopefully going to music school following that. Little note is that my main interest is jazz but I also try to play a bit of classical as I love lots of that music as well.

I’m making this post as a sort of “cry for help” as while this has always been a problem with me, recently it’s been affecting me more. I’ve been told if I stay at it I’ll have a successful career and that I’m close to the higher end of people from where I am that have gone into music. Even with all this and always having friends say stuff like “ooh you’ve improved so much” and “you sound so good” I just can’t hear it in my playing (which I think is common in musicians and not really the main focus of this). I also compare myself a lot which also affects this.

The main point of this post though is as follows: I’m trying to find advice or anything that will help me find my love for this again.

I find it hard to even start practicing and when I do I either don’t know what to practice, or just can’t stand to play for very long. I find that I’d much rather spend time with friends, playing video games, or anything else. I’m not gonna act like I never practice, because I do and I know that if I want to do this as my job I need to work hard for this but I can see I’m not putting nearly enough effort into this. I also find that I only feel good about my playing when validated by people I look up to (mentors, other older musicians, etc).

I am truly sure that this is what I love (especially as I am interested in going into literally nothing else even though I do well in school and “like” some of the subjects iykwim) and what I want to do for the rest of my life. I really can’t even imagine myself in a life without music. This is why I am so conflicted and so confused as to my lack of motivation and ability to practice.

I pretty selfishly don’t want to chalk this up to laziness which is probably why I’m posting this, but regardless I’d appreciate any advice anyone has to offer (or their own stories).

Sorry if this whole thing is rather random, scattered, or not detailed enough I’m typing this up fast on my phone before I shower lol.

Thanks to everyone in advance and for reading this!

Grip for Eastman 432G

We are trying to find a grip for Eastman 432G trombone for my son. We tried a couple from Amazon, but they did not fit, the tube is too thick where they are supposed to attach. I wonder if you have any recommendations?

Bushing A, as tight as I can squeeze it

Bushing B is kind of possible to squeeze together, but it is very distorted when both ends are touching.

Besides, bushing B does not close at all with even the thinnest strip

This trombone is not exactly the same as any of the three styles they have bushings for.

Name of person who plays trombone 🪊

If the name of a person who plays trumpet is “trumpeter”, then why is the name of a person who plays trombone “trombonist” and not “tromboner”? 🤔

He wasn’t lying

i just wrapped up this music camp at a university and on one of the days that i had private instruction, the teacher has asked me if i knew what the piece “the creation” by haydn was, I knew the composer but not the song, and he says that I’ll have to play it eventually, now, a day after that camp ended, I’m looking at audition repertoire for other camps and this is the first one that pops up

SLOW/ LOW studio session (without using AI as you can see))

Still working on my new project — SLOW / LOW. For those who keep saying I make all my music with AI — here's a raw clip from the studio. Just me, Cubase, and a lot of fuzz. The vocal track you hear is a scratch take — just a bunch of mumbled rhythmic phrases, no real lyrics yet. The high actual poetry is coming soon..
