Researchers just genetically engineered tobacco plants to produce five psychedelic compounds.

Scientists at the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel successfully introduced nine genes from various organisms into Nicotiana benthamiana, a close relative of the tobacco plant, to turn it into a living chemical factory.

Using a temporary gene-insertion method called agroinfiltration, the modified plants generated key therapeutic compounds, including psilocybin and psilocin (the active ingredients in 'magic mushrooms'), as well as DMT, bufotenin, and 5-MeO-DMT. This temporary approach ensures that the genetic changes are not passed down to future plant generations, offering a controlled, scalable means of production.

This breakthrough comes at a critical time as scientific and medical demand for psychedelics grows, threatening natural sources like the Colorado River toad and various fungi with habitat loss and overharvesting. While the current trials are experimental and yield only small amounts of the drugs, they prove that agricultural crops could serve as a highly sustainable alternative. By using greenhouse-grown plants as biological factories, researchers hope to secure a reliable, eco-friendly supply of the active compounds needed to power the next generation of therapies for depression, PTSD, and addiction.
