Segway GT3 Series Maintenance Guide: Part 2- Brake System Maintenance

When your Segway eKickScooter GT3 Series has accumulated a high mileage, please follow the instructions below to inspect the E-Scooter to ensure that your GT3 Series is in the best condition.

Note: This is the second installment of 5-part GT3 Series Maintenance Series. Stay tuned for the upcoming guides on lights, handlebars & folding mechanisms and wheel motor & non-driven wheel.

1. Braking Force Inspection

● GT3: Regularly (recommended every 500km or 3 months) check braking force: With the power off, hold the left handlebar and push the vehicle forward to check if the rear wheel can lock and slide; hold the right handlebar and push the vehicle forward to check if the front wheel can lock and slide. If the front or rear wheel cannot lock, adjustment is required.

● GT3 Pro: Regularly (recommended every 500km or 3 months) check braking force: With the power off, hold the left handlebar and push the vehicle forward to check if the rear wheel can lock and slide; hold the right handlebar and push the vehicle forward to check if the front wheel can lock and slide. If the front or rear wheel cannot lock, adjustment and brake fluid replenishment are required.

2. Braking Lever Inspection

● Before riding, check the brake lever for cracks or deformation. If any of the above issues are found, replace the brake lever promptly. If the brake lever is loose, tighten the brake lever fixing screw immediately (before tightening, check whether the screw and nut are in good condition without stripped threads, breakage, or rust).

https://preview.redd.it/4cqsvdkw4ebh1.png?width=554&format=png&auto=webp&s=a02b7382f2717095cccdd9e6e66678acfed3e395

● Regularly (recommended every 500km or 3 months) check and clean sand/dirt from the brake lever pivot point. Apply lubricant to mechanical parts (e.g., springs, pivot shafts) to ensure clear travel feedback when pulling the lever and automatic reset after release.

https://preview.redd.it/j1t3z7ax4ebh1.png?width=554&format=png&auto=webp&s=064055d2897c576eb5556877c100f661e2bc5f23

3. Braking Cable Inspection

● GT3: Regularly (recommended every 500km or 3 months) inspect the brake cable. If damage, breakage, or stiffness is observed, replace it promptly. If the brake cable fixing screw is loose, apply threadlocker and retighten with a torque wrench (Torque: 5±0.1 N·m)

https://preview.redd.it/pgh8tmvx4ebh1.png?width=217&format=png&auto=webp&s=73397a7f5ef9b31958f72499953706fde83e21a1

● GT3 Pro: Regularly (recommended every 500km or 3 months) inspect the brake cable. If damage, breakage, or oil leakage is observed, replace it promptly. Check the condition of the brake pads; if pin breakage or detachment is found, replace them immediately.

https://preview.redd.it/j2ccbncy4ebh1.png?width=214&format=png&auto=webp&s=6c9fe6ab24d6857cb7998325c6bfe84bec5aa473

● GT3: When pulling the brake lever, test the tightness of the brake cable. If it is too loose or too tight, adjust the brake cable appropriately.

https://preview.redd.it/20e3a8vy4ebh1.png?width=554&format=png&auto=webp&s=2b16f12023e6a64c50edafb94f10b212ae945350

● GT3 Pro: When pulling the brake lever, test the braking performance. If it feels too loose, replenish brake fluid promptly.

4. Brake Disc Inspection

● Regularly (recommended every 500km or 3 months) inspect the brake disc surface for even wear, cracks, deep grooves (depth ≥0.5mm), rust, warping, or deformation. If cracks, localized wear, deep grooves, warping, or deformation are found, replace the brake disc immediately. Minor rust can be removed through continuous braking friction.

● Check the brake disc fixing screws for looseness to prevent vibration or noise during braking. If screws are loose, apply threadlocker and retighten with a torque wrench (Torque: 2.5±0.25 N·m).

https://preview.redd.it/15x8iv9z4ebh1.png?width=254&format=png&auto=webp&s=5b468fa277a707734134b12af7581e55c3e44576

● If abnormal noise occurs during light braking, it may be caused by foreign objects (e.g., sand, metal debris) between the brake disc and brake pads. Repeated light braking can help clear such debris. Additionally, excessive wear of the brake disc or pads may also cause noise. Replace the corresponding components if needed.

5. Disc Brake Caliper Inspection

Regularly (recommended every 500km or 3 months) check the disc brake caliper fixing screws for looseness. If loose screws are found, apply threadlocker and retighten with a torque wrench (Torque: 10±1 N·m).

https://preview.redd.it/49uzm6oz4ebh1.png?width=554&format=png&auto=webp&s=55e1461e30a88a21ee0d758505454e032da032dc

Warning:

Regularly check the brake system to ensure proper functioning. Avoid safety risks caused by abnormal brake performance during riding.

[Throttle and Brake] Throttle does not fully rebound | Segway ZT3 Pro

Problem Details:

After releasing the throttle, it does not return to its original position, causing the scooter to continue moving at low speed.

Problem Analysis:

The throttle is stuck due to foreign objects or debris.

Solution

  1. Use a 3mm hex key to loosen the screw at the bottom of the throttle.
  2. Check if the throttle rebounds normally.
  3. If it functions properly, gently tighten the screw.
  4. If the throttle still does not rebound, replace the throttle assembly.

[Throttle and Brake] Braking Failure/Long Braking Distance | Segway ZT3 Pro

Problem Details:

The brake does not provide sufficient stopping power or the braking force is very weak.

Solution

Scenario 1: After powering on, squeeze the brake lever and observe if the rear taillight changes. If there is no brightening or flashing, it indicates that the brake lever has not triggered the electric signal.

Solution: You may need to contact a service network to replace the brake lever or the dashboard (except if the brake lever is too tight, in which case the screw at the brake lever can be adjusted).

Scenario 2: After squeezing the brake tightly and pushing the scooter backward, the rear wheel should be locked. If the rear wheel can still turn, it indicates that the mechanical brake force is insufficient.

Solution: The brake needs to be adjusted.

Scenario 3: When going downhill for a long distance in a fully charged state, if the battery temperature exceeds 53℃ or is below -10℃, or if the scooter's battery power is below 10%, the electric brake force may weaken.

Solution: In these extreme situations, please slow down, squeeze the brake firmly, and the mechanical brake will still function.

[Scooter Noise] Abnormal sound during power-on/off or when cruise control is activated | Segway ZT3 Pro

Problem Details:

The scooter's buzzer makes abnormal sounds during operations such as power-on/off or activation of cruise control.

Problem Analysis:

The buzzer is damaged.

Solution:

The buzzer primarily serves as an alert device. If it can still produce sound, it does not affect the scooter's functionality. However, if the sound is too weak, the entire dashboard assembly may need to be replaced.

[Scooter Noise] Abnormal noise from the front suspension | Segway ZT3 Pro

Problem Details:

When squeezing the front brake or pushing the front wheel against a wall and pressing down on the pedals, an abnormal noise is heard during the compression of the front suspension.

Problem Analysis:

The noise is caused by the internal spring rubbing against the tube wall inside the front suspension.

Solution:

The noise from the internal spring generally does not affect riding. However, if the noise is severe, the front suspension assembly needs to be replaced to resolve the issue.

[Scooter Noise] Abnormal noise from the front wheel | Segway ZT3 Pro

Problem Details:

During riding, there is an abnormal noise coming from the front wheel area.

Problem Analysis:

The noise is generally caused by the brake disc rubbing against the brake pads.

Solution:

When the front wheel is spinning freely, a friction sound occurs once per rotation. This is usually caused by the brake disc rubbing against the brake pads. Adjust the disc brakes to resolve the issue.

[Scooter Noise] Abnormal noise from the rear wheel | Segway ZT3 Pro

Problem Details:

During riding, there is an abnormal noise coming from the rear wheel area.

Problem Analysis:

There are multiple potential causes for the noise, and the specific reason needs to be analyzed based on the situation.

Solution:

1. Noise disappears when stepping on the rear cover during riding.

This indicates that the noise is caused by resonance of the rear cover. The noise can be eliminated by removing the small cover with a pry tool and filling it with cushioning foam, or by replacing the small cover with a new one.

2. Noise during sudden acceleration or braking.

This may be caused by loose screws. Remove the left and right decorative pieces of the rear fork and use an 18mm open-end wrench to tighten the nuts on both sides of the motor.

3. Friction sound once per rotation when the rear wheel is spinning freely.

This is usually caused by rubbing against the disc brake. Adjust the disc brake to resolve the issue.

4. Rear wheel wobbles when lifting the rear tail decoration while the scooter is stationary.

Slight wobbling is generally due to the gap in the shock absorber fit and does not affect riding. If there is significant noise, the rear shock absorber can be replaced to solve the problem.

5.Noise from inside the motor during scooter operation.

This may indicate a damaged motor. Replace the motor to resolve the issue.

[Power On & Off] Unable to Power On | Segway ZT3 Pro

Problem Details:

The scooter dashboard does not light up when the power button is pressed.

Problem Analysis:

Charger fault, power button fault, or poor wiring connection may cause the scooter to not turn on.

Solution:

Scenario 1: Connecting the charger to the scooter, the charger will light up red. If the light does not change, it may indicate that the battery is fully charged or damaged. (If the charger does not light up when connected to the power socket, it indicates a charger malfunction.)

Solution: Replace the battery.

Scenario 2: After the charger's red light stays on for more than 5 seconds, unplug the charger and press the power button briefly to turn on the scooter. If the scooter does not start, it may be due to a damaged power button or other multiple component failures.

Solution: Remove the four screws from the handlebar area, pull out the handlebar, and disconnect the wiring between the dashboard and the scooter. Check if the socket inside is misaligned. If it is misaligned, replace the damaged wiring. If it is not misaligned, reinsert the terminals and then check if the scooter can be turned on.

Scenario 3: The controller or dashboard is damaged due to other unknown reasons;

Solution: Replace the controller or the dashboard assembly.

[Power On & Off] Power On/Off Automatically | Segway ZT3 Pro

Problem Details:

The scooter turns off or on automatically without pressing the power button.

Problem Analysis:

The automatic on/off issue may be caused by a stuck power button or water ingress into the button.

Solution:

  1. If the "AirLock" feature is enabled in the app, which means the scooter is set to unlock automatically when the phone is nearby, automatic power-on is a normal phenomenon.
  2. If the button does not rebound properly, replace the combination button.
  3. Disconnect the wiring between the dashboard and the scooter, and then reconnect the terminals. If the issue persists, replace the dashboard component.

Segway Rider Q&A | Episode 5

Hey Segway riders, Episode 5 has officially rolled in! If you missed any of the previous Q&A sessions, you can still catch up on Episode 1Episode 2Episode 3 and Episode 4.

We’ve been going through your comments, messages, and questions, and the response has been incredible. Your feedback helps us understand what you care about most and keeps this series moving forward.

Read the full article to find out which topics we answered this time. And don’t stop sending in your questions, they might be featured in the next one!

Q1: What should I check before buying a second-hand eKickScooter?

A1: Buying a used electric scooter can be a cost-effective option, but before completing the transaction, it’s important to check more than just the scooter’s appearance and performance. You should also confirm that the account binding, ownership information, and after-sales documents have been properly handed over. To help reduce transaction risks, we recommend that you go through the following items one by one before completing the purchase:

First, scooter account / Find My unbinding confirmation

Ask the original owner to fully unbind the scooter from the official brand app and remove it from the Apple Find My app. This helps avoid future location, account-binding, or ownership disputes.

Second, purchase proof handover

Please ask the original owner to provide the original proof of purchase, such as an invoice or electronic order record. This may be required for official warranty service or after-sales support.

Third, clear password

Make sure the original owner clears any power-on password.

Fourth, full scooter inspection

Before completing the transaction, carefully check whether the power system, brakes, motor, and other systems are working properly. You can also verify the scooter’s serial number through official channels to confirm its authenticity and warranty status.

To protect your safety and rights, we recommend completing all the above checks before purchasing a second-hand ekickscooter.

Q2: How do I remove my ekickscooter from Apple Find My?

A2: Before selling, transferring, or re-binding your electric scooter, please make sure to properly turn off and remove the Apple Find My feature. The Find My binding may affect device re-binding and the use of location-related features. If it is not removed in time, the new user may be unable to add the device properly, or it may lead to location tracking or ownership-related issues.

Method 1: Unbind via the Segway Mobility App

First, connect your ekickscooter to the Segway Mobility App.

Second, go to Home > Settings > Locating scooter / Find My > Find My function, then disable “Find My scooter.”

Third, manually remove the scooter from the Apple Find My app.

Method 2: Reset directly on the scooter

First, power on the ekickscooter and make sure it is unlocked.

Second, press the brake lever 5 times in a row, then press the power button once to complete the reset.

Third, the ekickscooter will beep, indicating that the reset has been completed successfully.

Fourth, manually remove the scooter from the Apple Find My app.

Q3: Can I install a GT3 battery on a Max G3?

A3: Recently, we have noticed that some users have attempted to install the GT3 battery on the Max G3. Please note that the battery specifications, control system, and safety protection mechanisms may differ between models. Even if the scooter appears to operate after the modification, it may still lead to the following issues:

1. Safety and reliability risks

This battery combination has not passed official reliability and safety testing. In extreme conditions, it may affect riding safety or cause abnormal scooter behavior.

2. Inaccurate remaining range display

The scooter may still calculate the remaining range based on the original G3 battery parameters, which could result in inaccurate mileage or battery level information.

3. BMS firmware update limitations

The Battery Management System may not be properly recognized, and the BMS firmware may not be able to update normally.

4. Potential impact on warranty or after-sales service

Unauthorized modification or installation of non-original parts may affect warranty coverage and official service support.

For your safety and the best riding experience, we recommend using the original battery model designed for your G3 scooter.

Q4: How can I find the nearest service center?

A4: You can find the nearest authorized service center through the official Segway website.

Go to the Segway official website > click Support at the top of the homepage > scroll down to More Services > select Service Center to search for nearby service centers.

Before visiting, we recommend contacting the service center in advance to confirm their service availability, business hours, appointment requirements, and whether they can support your specific product model. You may also prepare your scooter’s serial number and proof of purchase in case they are needed for service or warranty verification.

This is because the GPS signal is blocked (e.g., by tall buildings, tunnels, underground parking lots, etc.) or interfered with, resulting in inaccurate positioning. To optimize the navigation experience, we suggest the following:

Check the device’s location permissions: Ensure that the device’s location service is enabled and that the app has access to the location permissions.

Avoid areas with signal blockage: Try to stay close to windows or move to open areas to enhance the GPS signal.

Battery Charging Tips | eKickScooters

1. Check the temperature.

Charge the KickScooter at temperatures between 0 to 40℃ (for specific temperature ranges, please refer to corresponding user manuals). Otherwise, the scooter cannot be charged. To view the battery temperature in real time, please refer to How to Check the Battery Temperature in the App.

2. Charge in suitable places.

Make sure that the charge port, charger, and socket are dry during charging to avoid security risks and malfunction. Charge the battery in a dry and well-ventilated place at a suitable temperature. Do not expose the charger to direct sunlight or high humidity.

3. Use the original charger.

Please use the original charger to ensure that the battery is charged safely and the vehicle functions normally.

4. Charge promptly.

Charge the battery as soon as possible when the power is less than 20%. If the vehicle is not used for extended periods, store the battery with a power level no less than 80% and charge it every 6 months to avoid overdischarge and maintain battery life.

5. Avoid prolonged charging.

It is recommended that the charging time should be less than 10 hours.

6. Monitor charging status.

Segway Ninebot Max G3 | Q&A

Q1: How powerful is the motor on the Segway MAX G3?

A1: The Segway eKickScooter MAX G3 is powered by a 2000W peak motor, which is double the output of the previous MAX G2's 1000W motor. This significant increase in power allows the G3 to reach speeds up to 28 mph (45 km/h) and sprint from 0 to 15 mph in just 2.4 seconds. The motor provides strong performance across flat urban terrain and handles steep inclines with ease, with a climbing slope capability of up to 30%.

Q2: What is the range of the MAX G3, and what is SegRange technology?

A2: The MAX G3 offers a range of up to 50 miles (80 km) in Eco mode, supported by a 597 Wh built-in battery. This extended range is achieved through Segway's proprietary SegRange™ technology, which optimizes performance across the brushless motor, long-range formula tires, and the controller algorithm, increasing range by approximately 20% compared to the same battery without this system. An optional external battery (sold separately) can extend the total range even further.

Q3: What is the SegRide Stability Enhancement System on the MAX G3?

A3: SegRide™ is Segway’s patented stability enhancement system designed to improve control, comfort, and ride confidence across select Gen 3 electric scooters. It optimizes the scooter’s geometry, including margin distance, stem angle, and steering damping, to support smoother handling at higher speeds, during turns, and on uneven or slippery roads.

Q4: What does the smart TFT display on the MAX G3 show?

A4: The MAX G3 features a 2.4-inch TFT color display that goes well beyond basic speed and battery readouts. It provides turn-by-turn navigation guidance, real-time riding stats (speed, mode, trip distance), incoming call notifications so you can stay aware without looking at your phone, and system status alerts. This is a major upgrade from the LED dashboards found on previous MAX models and adds a premium, connected riding experience.

Q5: What braking system does the MAX G3 use, and does it have ABS?

A5: The MAX G3 is equipped with dual-piston disc brakes on both the front and rear, a significant upgrade from the G2's drum and electronic brake combination. These disc brakes provide shorter stopping distances and more balanced braking performance at higher speeds. Notably, the MAX G3 also includes an Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), which is extremely rare in standing electric scooters and helps prevent wheel lockup during quick stops.

Q6: What is the water resistance rating and payload capacity of the MAX G3?

A6: The Segway eKickScooter MAX G3 carries an IPX6 water resistance rating for the main body, an improvement over the IPX5 rating of the G2, meaning it can withstand powerful water jets from any direction. The battery pack itself is rated IPX7, offering protection against temporary submersion. The G3 supports a maximum payload of 130 kg (286 lbs).

tips: The official range is measured under standardized laboratory conditions, which include a fully charged battery, a 75 kg load, an ambient temperature of 25°C, flat terrain, and consistent moderate speed.
